Chinese Consumer (消费者) Rights Day is a special day in China. It is on March 15. On this day, the 3.15 Gala, a show made by China Central Television, is on TV to report cases (事件) that are against the consumers’ rights in different areas. Of all the areas they covered, news about food industry (行业) is the most shocking.
In 2022, the 3.15 Gala exposed (揭露) the inside story of making pickled (腌制的) cabbage. They made a video of a famous company called Hunan Chaqi Vegetable Company. It produced much pickled cabbage for years. But from the video, it had a terrible hygiene problem. The video showed some workers, wearing slippers (拖鞋) or even without shoes, were stepping on the pickled cabbage. Others were smoking and one even threw rubbish into the cabbage.
People were really worried about their health after watching it because the pickled cabbage was used in Master Kong (康师傅) instant noodles for years. This kind of noodles was the best seller before the gala. But very quickly, Jingdong, Taobao and Hema took all of them away. Then Master Kong replied quickly that it stopped working with Chaqi.
This year, the dish known as “braised pork with Meigancai (梅菜扣肉)” was reported on the 3.15 Gala. In Fuyang, Anhui Province, workers in the factory used meat from a pig’s neck—an area with glands (腺体), lipoma (脂肪瘤), and thyroid (甲状腺)—to make the traditional Chinese dish. But this dish should use the meat from a pig’s belly. The report said that the price of a pig’s belly is about 24 yuan per kilogram, which is four times that of a pig’s neck.
Seven other cases were reported on this year’s 3.15 Gala. They covered Internet safety, car industry, phone apps and so on. For more information, you can visit https://.

Thousands of runners tied their running shoes and poured out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the way. Marathons (马拉松) in China are becoming popular again.
According to the Chinese Athletics Association (中国田径协会), a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered (注册) for the first six months of 2023. On March 26, more than 300, 000 runners took part in 26 marathon events around the country, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He won the first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2.
For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He ran about 30-40 kilometers in local sports centers each week ahead of the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests how much pressure a runner’s body and mind can stand,” he told Teens.
When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance (长距离的) running, the only person you have to compete against and beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Li Zhouzi from Chongqing took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when he was 10. The support from the people cheering along the way really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was inspired to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens.
She thinks she can learn a lot from running a marathon. “Similarly, our life is also a marathon,” Li said.

Chinese Consumer (消费者) Rights Day is a special day in China. It is on March 15.
