Feel sad Hug a tree! These days, lots of young Chinese people are hugging trees to reduce stress (减压). It might sound strange, but there’s science behind it.
The “biophilia hypothesis” (亲生命假说) can explain it. An American scientist named Edward Wilson talked about it in 1984. He said humans love being around other living things from birth. Our love for nature is “in our DNA”. That’s why we like green nature views more than city views. It’s also why we love cute pets.
Some studies show how tree-hugging helps our health. In 2021, a study found that hugging trees can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) that affects our feelings. The more oxytocin we have, the calmer and happier we feel. Just 21 seconds of tree-hugging can increase oxytocin.
There’s another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇). It shows how stressed we are. When we’re nervous, angry or very sad, our brain makes more cortisol. Hugging trees can reduce cortisol, and then we’ll feel better.
However, while tree-hugging is good for us, we must be careful not to harm nature. Trees are home to many small creatures that we can’t even see. So, when you hug a tree, be as gentle as you would be when hugging a friend!

Second, volunteering in animal welfare organizations is a great way to help. These organizations work hard to rescue and find homes for animals in need. By volunteering, we can make a real difference for animals.
