Hello, my name is Haaziq Kazi. Have you ever thought about reducing plastic waste of the oceans Here’s my experience.
It all started five years ago when I was 11. I watched a TV show about plastic pollution of the oceans. I was shocked by tons of plastic waste like bottles and fishing tools in the show. That’s how I got the idea of making a smart ship to clean the oceans. In the beginning, I made a model ship named Ervis. It was far from perfect, but it was an important step forward.
Soon I was invited to share my idea in the TED-Ed programme. The programme gave me a great chance to share my dream for a better earth. Thanks to the talk, I was more sure that making the ship was meaningful. After the talk, I did a lot of research and worked with experts to design a better ship. It can collect plastic waste and clean the oceans. The ship is large with saucers (碟状物) around it. The saucers move circularly (循环地) on the water to pull the waste towards the centre of the ship and “eat” it.
Building the ship is not my only way to help the earth. Together with my team, I’ve also founded an organisation, the Ervis Foundation. It has three branches (分支)—Hero, Hub and Hygiene. Hero is about education. We aim to create more heroes to protect the oceans. Hub serves as our digital platform to sell zero-waste products. Hygiene collects ideas about fighting against plastic waste, just like Ervis.
My journey with Ervis shows that everyone can make a difference. Find your own idea to protect the oceans and create a cleaner and healthier planet.
4. What did Haaziq make when he was 11
A. A model ship. B. A TV show. C. A fishing tool. D. A plastic bottle.
5. How did Haaziq feel about the TED-Ed programme
A. Sorry. B. Calm. C. Worried. D. Thankful.
6. In the Ervis Foundation, what is “Hygiene” for
A. Selling zero-waste products. B. Creating more heroes.
C Finding ideas to reduce waste. D. Building a digital platform.
7. What is the main purpose of the speech
A. To advise people to work as a team. B. To encourage people to protect the oceans.
C. To invite people to join the Ervis Foundation. D. To describe serious problems of plastic waste.

Wang Qingchun, a 64-year-old retiree (退休人员) from Changsha, had long suffered the hot summers in her home town. Tired of the heat, she decided to move to the cool cities in the south or the villages in the north.
Finally, in early July, Wang chose an old people’s flat in Qujing, a city in the southwest of China. The flat provided free meals. She didn’t have to cook on her own. This saved her a lot of trouble. Besides, the film room and the music room there made her life much more interesting. Most importantly, the weather in Qujing was so comfortable. Wang even joked that she didn’t need an air-conditioner (空调) any more.
Retirees like Wang are called “elderly migratory birds”. Just like migratory birds, they move to different places in different seasons to enjoy a better environment. Now, more and more elderly people are choosing this new way of life.
A recent study shows what makes retirees choose to be “elderly migratory birds”. The beautiful sights of a place are the top reason. Then come pleasant climate and convenient transport. Good medical care seems much less important. This is because many new retirees are still in good condition. They are active and lively to travel pared with the retirees in the old days, now elderly people can enjoy richer retirement life with enough money and good health. It’s a wonderful change, letting them go to new places and have fun experiences after years of hard work.
However, even with enjoyable seasonal retirement life, these “elderly migratory birds” still need young people’s care. As Wang said, “I have everything here, but I miss my granddaughter. She’s too busy. It would be so much better if she could call me more often. ”
8. Where did Wang Qingchun go in July
A. In Southwest China. B. In Southeast China.
C. In Northwest China. D. In Northeast China.
9. What kind of people are “elderly migratory birds”
A. Retirees who love migratory birds. B. Retirees who travel for a better life.
C. Retirees who live in old people’s flats. D. Retirees who enjoy life in home towns.
10. Which of the following shows the result of the study
A. B.
C. D.
11. What can be the best title of the text
A. Qujing Sees More Elderly Tourists B. Elderly People Hope for Better Health
C. A New Way of Life for Retirees Gets Popular D. Chinese Retirees Need Young People’s Care
D
①Take a look at the two shapes in the picture. Which one do you think is “kiki” and which one is “bouba” This is part of a famous bouba-kiki experiment done in both America and India.
②In the experiment people were shown two drawings. One had a rounded shape, and the other had a star-like shape. People had to name each of them with “bouba” or “kiki”. Both of these words were not real words in any language and had no meaning. However, 95% of people decided the rounded one was “bouba”, and the star-like one was “kiki”.
③The experiment shows our brains seem to connect sounds with shapes. The researchers believe the results have something to do with the mouth shapes we make when we say these words. Pronouncing “bouba” requires the mouth to make a rounded shape. Other examples of “rounded” sounds are oo in “room” and o in “wrote”. An unrounded mouth shape is needed to make the sound of “kiki”. “Unrounded” sounds require the lips (嘴唇) to be spread apart, like ee in “peek” or a in “had”.
④Another explanation is that letters such as k or t are thought to have unrounded sounds because of their sharp (尖锐的) shapes. Letters like b or g have rounded shapes, so they are considered to have rounded and soft sounds.
⑤Understanding the bouba-kiki effect can lead to its possible use in fields like branding (品牌) and communication. For example, if a toy brand wants to show its softness and friendliness, it may follow the “bouba” effect and choose rounded shapes for the logo and rounded sounds for product names. Similarly, a technology company may turn to the “kiki” effect to show it’s sharp and powerful. So next time you want to design a logo for a school event or name a product, consider whether it feels more like “bouba” or “kiki”!
12. How does the writer begin the text
A By listing numbers. B. By telling a joke.
C. By giving examples. D. By asking a question.
13. According to the text, what can you learn about the bouba-kiki experiment
A. It was done in both America and England.
B. It shows connections between shapes and sounds.
C. “Bouba” and “kiki” come from Indian languages.
D. Most people connect “bouba” with star-like things.
14. Which brand best shows the “kiki” effect
A. Loops. B. Wubbo. C. Teeki. D. Bugaloo.
15. What is the correct structure of the text
A. B.
C. D.
