Despite extreme cold, cruel ice and being brushed off as mad, Slovenian Davo Karnicar became the first person to ski non-stop down Mount Qomolangma. After a dramatic descent(下降) over almost sheer cliffs of snow, stones and ice, 38-year-old Karnicar returned to his base camp after five hours of skiing. “I feel only absolute happiness and absolute tiredness,” he said.
Due to the severe weather conditions, Karnicar flung himself back down the mountain as soon as he reached the top rather than have a rest as planned. At one point, he had to speed over stretches of ice that collapsed and broke underneath him and could have sent him falling into the deep crevasses (裂缝) that dot the mountain.
The descent had been widely regarded as extremely dangerous. The Darwin Awards website, known for documenting foolhardy deaths, urged people to log on to their website and “keep your eyes peeled for a live Darwin Award”. However, the only body to make the news was the corpse (尸体) of an unknown mountaineer which Karnicar zipped past as he descended, one of an estimated 120 corpses thought to litter the slopes. “This mountain is always full of surprises. Seeing a dead man out there was still a shocking experience,” he said.
Thanks to strategically placed cameras on the mountain and one attached to his safety helmet, hundreds of thousands of people witnessed the process online, which was one of the record highs ever of more than 650,000 hits: The website was once jammed as people tried to access the site.
A previous failed attempt had already cost Karnicar two fingers when he got frostbite as a fierce storm hit the ing from a skiing family and having made his first Himalayan skiing expedition in 1989, he has been ever since tireless in raising funds and sponsorship for more expeditions, with Qomolangma as the permanent goal.
1. How did Davo Karnicar make history
A. By skiing down Mount Qomolangma without rest.
B. By attracting the largest number of online audiences.
C. By descending Mount Qomolangma within the shortest time ever.
D. By becoming the first to film his descent down Mount Qomolangma.
2. What does the underlined word foolhardy in paragraph 3 mean
A. Daring but thoughtless.
B. Natural but tragic.
C. Peaceful and lonely.
D. Slow and heartbreaking.
3. What was the most dangerous during Karnicar's descent
A. His heavy falling off a sheer cliff.
B. The sudden appearance of other climbers.
C. The unexpected collapse of an icy hillside.
D. The sight of 120 corpses littering the slopes.
4. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage

B. Body of Mountaineer Found on Qomolangma
C. Mad Man Skis down Qomolangma

3 五年高考 (2023浙江一考) 主题:火车旅行
With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train Compared to other alternatives, it's comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 1. But no matter when you travel, it's a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.
Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. 2. Then you won't have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you're riding on trains, you won't be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 3. In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. 4. Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun. 5. Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you're going 67.92 mph.
A. Train trips aren't for impatient types.
B. You'll have views from both sides of the train.
C. The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D. That's particularly true during busy summer months.
E. You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F. Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G. He may also book you in a sleeping car that's right next to the diner.

主题:海底游览
It's perhaps the world's most famous underwater attraction that remains in film and in legend: the Titanic. But now experts say the ocean liner, once a wonder of the high seas, is falling to pieces.
Capt. Alfred McLaren, the scientist who in July led the most recent expedition to the ship's underwater grave, said his team saw clear signs of the accelerating damage to the wreck (残骸). There was damage likely caused by rust and sea life, and the captain's cabin had collapsed.
“I was absolutely astonished,” McLaren says.
Worse still, the fallen mast (桅杆) that crushed the ship's deck is believed by many to be the result of an unapproved salvage (打捞) operation. “It was almost depressing to see how quickly she was getting worse,” McLaren says. “I would be really surprised if there's very much standing up from the bottom, two decades from now.”
Ed Kamuda, who runs the Titanic Historical Society in Springfield, Mass., says adventure tourists—who pay $36,000 each to visit the wreck—are also contributing to the destruction of it.
“This is something I expected. I just didn't expect it to happen so quickly,” Kamuda says. “People are going down just as an ego trip to say ‘I was there.' All this damages the ship.”
The Titanic has sat at the bottom of the Atlantic since it sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage on April 14, 1912. More than 1,500 people died that night. The ship came to rest at the bottom of the freezing North Atlantic, more than 2 miles beneath the waves. The wreck was discovered in 1985, and since then it has been repeatedly visited by treasure hunters.
But still some scientists say those divers, and other thrill seekers are not necessarily to blame for the Titanic's current problems.
Capt. Craig McLean of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration went on an expedition to the Titanic in June as part of a government study that is monitoring the condition of the ship. He says it's unclear what part of the damage is from Mother Nature and which is from human nature.
“It's too early and there isn't enough evidence to put our fingers on anything,” McLean says.
Regardless, most agree there's little that can be done for this most famous of wrecks. And soon, the mighty Titanic could well be lost again.
1. McLaren expected that in twenty years .
A. only a minor part of the wreck would remain as it is
B. the wreck would be getting worse at a faster speed
C. only salvage operations with the purpose of research would be approved

A. To contribute to the breaking down of the Titanic.
B. To help finance the preservation of the Titanic.
C. To satisfy their curiosity and adventurousness.
D. To better understand the history of the Titanic.
3. Craig McLean is one of the scientists who believe .
A. visitors should not be prohibited from visiting the Titanic and other famous wrecks
B. the influence of the thrill seekers on the wreck will finally be determined
C. the government should devote more to the monitoring of the Titanic
D. the damage to the Titanic is not necessarily attributed to the adventure tourists
4. The author is most likely to agree that the future of the Titanic is .
A. promising

As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins(企鹅) longing to say hello. These gentle, lovely gatekeepers welcomed her and kick-started what was to be a trip Ginni would never forget.
Ever since her childhood, Ginni, now 71, has had a deep love for travel. Throughout her career (职业) as a professional dancer, she toured in the UK, but always longed to explore further. When she retired from dancing and her sons eventually flew the nest, she decided it was time to take the plunge.
After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts, Ginni began to travel the world, eventually getting work teaching English in Japan and Chile. And it was in Chile she discovered she could get last-minute cheap deals on ships going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. “I just decided I wanted to go,” she says. “I had no idea about what I'd find there and I wasn't nervous, I just wanted to do it. And I wanted to do it alone as I always prefer it that way.”
In March 2008, Ginni boarded a ship with 48 passengers she'd never met before, to begin the journey towards Antarctica. “From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing. Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has,” Ginni says. “I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale; it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater.”
The realization that this is a precious land, to be respected by humans, was one of the biggest things that hit home to Ginni.

I've been living in Spain for decades and I securely guarantee that I have a talent for figuring out the cool hidden local spots. As a foreigner, I couldn't care less about doing touristy things or enjoying fancy cuisine. 1. So I always attempt to find something that's appealing and fun yet represents the local culture, and that offers an interaction with the locals.
My reputation for doing this has grown. 2. Since I am somewhat fluent in Spanish, I could charge people for this and become somewhat of an official tour guide. I choose not to though, because to me, the most important thing is making sure the tourist, who already spent a lot of time and money getting to where I am, has the fun and cultural experience they could possibly have. 3. In that case, tourists can explore the local culture further at the lowest cost. They could otherwise spend a significant sum of money on a guided tour that keeps them comfortable but separated from the culture. I choose to give them an experience that's deeper and opens their minds, all for free.
4. When someone is visiting your area, don't just take them to the touristy spots. Show them the places that mean something to you. Show them your heart through the places that you show them and the experience you give them. There's something good in almost every town out there. If you don't have any spots in your area that you like, learn to find the good in the place you live. If you find the good in where you live, you will also find the good in yourself. It's a time that both you and the tourist will probably never obtain again. 5.
A. Everyone can do the same.
B. I could hardly have imagined it would happen.
C. It could also help me create a lifelong connection with them.
D. What's most crucial is experiencing the genuine country and culture.
E. I know better than tourists themselves what they are eager to experience.
F. Don't rush the experience; thoroughly enjoy every moment with that person.
G. I'm being asked frequently to offer people tours, both to friends and strangers.

A. His heavy falling off a sheer cliff.
B. The sudden appearance of other climbers.
C. The unexpected collapse of an icy hillside.
D. The sight of 120 corpses littering the slopes.

2. What is the tourist's purpose of visiting the wreck, according to Kamuda
