When I was a kid of about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles (雀斑). I had reached the age when I began to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was upset.
I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds. She had perfect skin. I couldn't help comparing myself with her and thinking' that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.
And then, in the back pages of Elizabeth's magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would arrive in mail soon. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day.I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.
Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at something that would make me beautiful. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my face. Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎皮百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that my face started to burn. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like, "I've never seen you with that many freckles before." When I saw myself in the mirror, I burst into tears and hid in the bathroom.

Tom could communicate well with other people through the computer or even on the phone, but when it came to making public presentations, he was hopeless. He was aware that people at conferences would count up the times he said such things as "what I really meant to say was..." when he got nervous.
Tom was an expert in Reality Robotics Company. His boss had asked him to do something that he was absolutely scared about. The next month he would be presenting on behalf of his company, and there would be a lot of people, and his boss, who had never attended Tom's presentations, wanted to impress the audience with the innovative work that the company was doing. Tom knew his boss's respect for him would plummet (坠落) if he said that he could not do it. So, he worked like crazy on the task.
One day, he felt a great need to relax. He turned on the TV. He laughed, and smiled through the first show, making him feel a little better. But it was the second show that really got to him, where the ventriloquist (腹语术者) Arthur worked with his dummy (假人). This really provided him with an inspiration for how he was going to make his much-feared presentation a success.
The next day, he organized a meeting of the people that had the skills he needed, and, of course, his boss. When he explained what he wanted to do, he could sense that everyone was with him on this plan. But a lot of work had to be done for the object of the plan to be completed.
It was the day of the presentation. Tom was somewhat nervous, but nowhere near to the extent that he usually was for just such a situation. And they had to get to their destination early, for what needed to be done had to be completed before the audience knew what was going on.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The much-anticipated presentation started.
Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly the same as the presenter.

I knew the fearful day would come sooner or later. However, it came too fast. I was waiting in the dental(牙齿的)clinic, nervous about what was to come.
Seeing my nervousness, my parents told me to sit up, and to take deep breaths to keep calm, which worked. However, the peace was short-lived. Almost immediately, my name was called, signaling my turn had come. I pretended to be deaf but my mother gestured at me to stand up. I forced myself to step forward and tripped over a toy left lying around by some kid. My clumsiness(笨拙)got me the attention of everyone in the room.
I had refused my parents offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist's room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a tray(托盘)on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I didn't look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. I almost jumped out of the seat when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light.
The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse(冲洗)their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist's face. I froze with awkwardness and my mind went blank.

We were driving across the big state of Texas on our way to California. Suddenly, our car coughed and then stopped.
"Are we out of gas " Mom asked. Dad nodded. Cotton fields lined both sides of the lonely highway as far as the eye could see. We hadn't seen a car for a very long time, and we had passed the last town an hour before. "Don't worry," Dad said. "Someone will be along soon." But he didn't sound very sure about that. He got out and put the car's hood(引擎盖) up, saying, "This will let them know we're in trouble."
After an hour, we saw dust in the distance. A car was fast approaching going in the same direction as ours. Pleased, Dad jumped to his feet, waving his arms wildly. He smiled as the car got closer, yet the car just sounded its horn(喇叭) and rushed off. We were so upset and I felt scared. Dusk was approaching and we had been sitting for a couple of hours. Then we heard a small noise in the distance.
It sounded like men singing at the top of their lungs. It got louder, and soon we saw a worn-out old truck driving slowly down the highway toward us. The whole truck seemed to float along surrounded by songs sung in Spanish.
"Get in the car immediately," Mom instructed me nervously. "Al, you'd better get in here, too. We can't be too careful out here in the middle of nowhere." Dad just stood by the car door, full of tension.
The wooden-sided truck came to a stop right beside him. Mom and I held our breath. Would they hold us up What would happen to us We could be at their mercy. From their look, we knew they were farmers who often labored in the fields all day under the hot Texas sun.
"Habla Espa ol " the driver stopped and called out his window at Dad. "What I know little Spanish," Dad shouted back, shaking his head. He wondered how to convey the message that we needed a ride to a gas station.

Taimur and Daniyal were twins and had been my next door neighbors since I was five years old. Not only did we go to the same school, but our evenings and weekends were spent together too. It was like we were inseparable. I never felt that I needed any friends other than them. Unexpectedly, one evening their parents shared the news of them moving to another country-Australia.
I was shocked to realize that we would never be together, started recalling all the good times we had spent together, such as playing in the school breaks, the play dates, and all the fun things we did. Was it all going to end
When we had been through so many highs and lows together, shared secrets and supported each other through thick and thin, their moving away felt like my heart was being taken away. The news of their departure left me feeling empty and lost.
I was thinking about the biggest change that I was going to face in a few days, it was a difficult pill to swallow, but I knew I must move on. Though it wasn't easy at first, I was trying my level best to beat the mental pain I was in.
After hearing the news, every day felt like a struggle. The school didn't feel the same; the lunchbreaks had no purpose. Soon there would be no one to compare the test marks with, homework remarks would not excite me like before, and so on. I couldn't help but feel lost and alone already.

It was a bright and sunny day. Daniel woke up and jumped out of bed, ready for a full day outside. He ran down the stairs and sat down at the kitchen table. His mom was making pancakes: Daniel's favorite. She made pancakes every Saturday morning.
"What do you want to do today " she asked Daniel.
"I think I'm going to go exploring in our backyard," he told her. "It's so nice outside!" Daniel quickly ate up his pancakes and rushed upstairs to get dressed. He put on a red T-shirt and jeans.
"Alright, Mom, I'll be back later!"
"Don't go too far!" she told him.
When he opened the door, Daniel felt a rush of warm air. He smiled at the sun. Perfect hiking weather, he thought. Daniel loved his backyard. There were plenty of tall trees. If he walked far enough, he would reach a lake. When it was really warm outside, he could walk in the water to cool off. The water was always cold.
The leaves were just beginning to grow on the trees after the cold winter. Daniel wandered for a bit. He picked up a long stick and used it to clear a way through the forest.
Suddenly, Daniel saw something in the distance that wasn't a rock or a leaf. When he got closer, he knelt down to investigate. He found a small injured bird between the fallen leaves. He looked around and saw a bird's nest sitting on a branch. He carefully climbed up the trunk of the tree with the nest to get a closer look. The nest was empty, and he didn't see any birds around. Then, he ran back to his house.

I pulled my exhausted (精疲力竭的) body off the bed and headed out the door. Put one foot in front of the other. That is all you have to do, I told myself. I was determined (决定) to make myself walk every hour for five minutes, regardless of how terrible I felt — it would help me feel better.
My husband and I had been told by my doctor, Tiffany, that my coping strategies needed to change to effectively manage my fatigue (极度劳累). Walking was a key part of my hoped-for change. Cancer had taken so much from me, and it was time to start working my way back. With that goal in mind, I set out into my yard and began walking.
At our second meeting, Tiffany helped us set long-term goals. One of my goals was a day at a theme park, walking instead of using a wheelchair. After our meeting, I carried on with my step challenge. As the weeks progressed, I began meeting other program goals, but I still had the theme park to conquer. It frightened me to risk a whole day on my feet.
The day finally came, and we went to SeaWorld. As we walked into the park, the sun was shining. Over the speakers, Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" played. "This is my fight song, take back my life song ..." she sang. Tears glistened (闪光) on my face, and my husband looked at me with concern. Our teenage daughter saw the worry in his eyes and looked at me. When we shared a knowing smile, my daughter said, "Don't worry, Dad. That's Mom's song."
In the early days of this cancer journey, she had left something at home after leaving for school and had found me balled up in bed, crying from the pain, with "Fight Song" on repeat. I told her it was my "fight song" and I would be fine finally. She gave me a hug before returning to her father's waiting truck. Clearly, she hadn't told him about that.

One day, I was taking a summer class in American literature on the campus of The State University of New York at Oneonta. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class, but his guest had been delayed. The class stirred with curiosity and anticipation.
"Who is coming " someone asked. "All I will tell you is that he is the author of one of the books you have read for this class," he said. "I need a volunteer to meet him and guide him here."
To my amazement, my right hand shot up. I never volunteer for anything. I'm introverted(内向的), shy, and uncomfortable meeting new people. In fact, I'm absolutely the wrong person for the job. Realizing my mistake, I put my hand down quickly, but it was too late.
"Thank you, David," said Professor James. "You'd better leave now. He will be arriving any minute." Seeing no way to back out, I reluctantly got out of my seat and headed for the classroom door. When I reached it, I stopped. "Umm," I said. "If I don't know who this person is, how will I recognize him I would hate to bring back the wrong guy." Professor James laughed. "Good point," he said. He pulled me aside and whispered a name in my ear. "Alex Haley," he said. "Really " I said.
I regretted for volunteering. Why me Alex Haley is one of the authors of The Autobiography of Malcolm X : As Told to Alex Haley. He is so famous. As I walked across the campus, my anxiety grew. I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of the famous gentleman by asking stupid questions, or worse, by guiding him in painful silence.
But at the moment I realized why I instinctively raised my hand to volunteer for this job. The man was what I wanted to be: a writer. I could learn from him.

The only life that Jeffrey had ever known was on the streets. He has been homeless since his parents fell ill and passed away.
As much as he tried, Jeffrey couldn't find a permanent job when he grew up. He only had a few clothes, blankets and shoes. With no family or friends, he relied on his local shelter and soup kitchen. He would often ask the workers at a local burger (汉堡包) place for their leftovers to survive.
Jeffrey knew many people in the area and would help new tenants (房客) move into their apartments for a bit of money. He desperately wanted to find a job, but he knew he didn't look the part (穿着与工作相宜). One day, as Jeffrey was looking through the garbage can outside the burger shop for food, he noticed a black object near the surface.
He picked it up and realized it was a wallet. Maybe one of the cooks dropped it, he thought. However, when he looked inside, he could recognize the I. D. picture. The wallet belonged to Alan, an old man who stayed a few blocks away.
Alan's cards and cash were still inside the wallet, meaning he'd lost it by mistake. There was also a check for $3,000 inside the wallet. "This is life-changing money. I could get some fresh clothes, maybe rent a small studio apartment and finally get a job," Jeffrey said to himself.
Jeffrey sat down with the wallet in his hands and decided to think about it first. He remembered asking Alan for money a few weeks before. Alan didn't give him money because he would have an operation soon. Jeffrey knew he couldn't live with the guilt of knowing a man would suffer if he took the money for himself. Even though he initially felt that the check may have been a gift, he quickly realized that it was more of a test.

As I was looking for a new flat, I was temporarily staying at a lovely small hotel. Unfortunately, during that time, I was due to participate in an online conference for an entire week. I was stuck inside from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, the entire duration of the cleaning hours. I figured that I could go those five days without my room being cleaned and it wouldn't be a problem. I would just put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door.
On the second day as I was heading to get breakfast at the hotel, I bumped(撞见) into the cleaning lady named Anna. I asked her if I could give her my rubbish, and I mentioned that I would be working the entire day so she needn't worry about cleaning my room. She smiled and said it was okay.
The next day, when I returned from my breakfast, my room had already been cleaned. The same happened on the following day. On Friday, I finished my breakfast quicker than usual and the cleaning lady was just heading out. She smiled and said that she was happy that even though I ate quicker than usual, she was still able to finish in time.
I finally realized that all this time, she had been keeping an eye on when I headed for breakfast so she could clean my room. Given that looking for a flat in a new city and working in one of the smallest hotel rooms in London were already very stressful, I was incredibly moved. I thanked Anna and told her that, fortunately, it was the very last day of the conference, but I was very thankful.
The following week, I finally got the keys for my new flat. Excited and grateful for all the help I had received while moving in, I bought a box of chocolates and made my way to the receptionist.

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. Remarkably, he could read; yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve had been failing since first grade. Sadly, no one noticed him until Miss White, a smiling, young, beautiful redhead.
Steve was immediately attracted by Miss White at the first sight! Yet still he failed. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss White. In the middle of the first semester, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see if he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared about him. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams. "Steve!" Alarmed, he turned to look at her. "Pay attention!"
"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face. "…. The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"
She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.

We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines. A standard poodle(鬈毛狗)born on Valentine's Day in 2002, he came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from a friend, who raised many dogs.
We were a sweet little family—me, my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I'd felt as if we wouldn't really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband travelled for some 200 days a year on business, and I knew I'd feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.
When we opened the box, we saw him. With his curly black hair and intelligent eyes, Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm(手掌)of my hand, his big paws(爪子)lapping over the sides. He was also scared. As I pulled him close, I felt his heart pound and wondered if we'd done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next.
Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his toy or run around the living room. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.
Some days after school, I'd find Jake curled up with Max inside his box. When I suggested that my son get out of the dog box, Jake yelled, "Max wants me in here! We're brothers!"
By his first birthday, Max had grown into a 50-pound guard dog. He manned the front door like a soldier, barking fiercely at other dogs walking by. I felt safe with him there, especially when my husband was away. Sometimes, when I was missing my husband a lot, I held Max close.
Many years later, my husband passed away. My kids grew up and went to university. They worked in other cities after graduation.

"Alice, you spend too much time on your phone," her father said. "You need to focus on your studies."
"But Dad, I'm doing my best," Alice replied. "I'm balancing my phone time with my studies."
In the tense meal, Alice and her parents argued about her recent changes. They were focused on her increased attachment to her phone and its impact on her studies. Her parents were concerned that she was neglecting(忽视) her studies and worried about the impact it might have on her future. They felt that her attachment to the phone was taking her away from her studies.
Alice said, "I know you're worried about me, but I'm trying my best. I just want to have some fun with my friends and take a break from studying sometimes." However, her parents didn't seem to understand or accept her explanation. They felt that she needed to focus more on her studies and less on the phone.
The argument escalated(升级) when Alice announced that she wanted to leave the science club she had been a member of for years to join a new social media club. Alice explained, "I'm not sure if leaving the science club was a right decision or not. I just feel like I need a change." Her mother was shocked and said angrily, "You made this decision without thinking it through. You've done well in the science club, and you have a lot of potential to go further. You'll regret it if you don't keep going."
After that argument, Alice, feeling increasingly frustrated, withdrew into herself and spent more time in her room. She started to avoid her parents as much as possible and didn't want to talk to them about anything related to her studies or her future.
Her parents saw that the little girl who had come back laughing and talking was gone, and now they saw a face that was alternately angry and sad. She did spend less time on her phone, but she became increasingly unhappy.

"And that's ‘The Ray of Hope' for you!" Asta said as she ended her book review. She took a deep bow and was given thundering applause. I, too, gave applause. I was happy for my friend. Well, I was pretending to be happy for her. Deep down inside, I was rather feeling envious of Asta. She was always the one who makes speeches, debates and tells stories to others. Me No! I had stage fright and was always the shy, quiet one who was never courageous to speak in front of others. I had never managed to do a presentation without stammering(结巴). Every time I saw someone making a speech, I would imagine myself in his or her place, receiving the applause and praise.
I was walking to the canteen with Asta. She, as usual, was looking at the script. She had been chosen to be the presenter for the National Day Celebration. I sighed to myself. Why could I not be like her, always loud and brave If only there was a way to prove myself...
Just then, I caught a glimpse of a poster on the noticeboard.
"Minute to say it " I read the poster out loud.
It was a competition where one has to prepare a speech about a particular topic and summarize it on the stage within one minute. This could be my big chance to overcome my stage fright! And the best part was, if I won the competition, I would receive a mini-trophy (小奖杯).
Without thinking twice, I grabbed a form and filled in it. I took a seat in the canteen with Asta and told her what I had done, after which she said that she had also signed up for the competition. Suddenly, regret hit me like a 20-pound hammer. I was competing against Asta who was the best speaker in the school! I was bound to lose! Why was I so ill-fated I just wanted a chance to prove myself that I could overcome my stage fright.

As usual, the whole class burst out laughing as Patric rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama (条纹睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher's hand froze in the middle of writing a formula (公式) on the blackboard.
Patric mumbled, "Sorry, teacher," and rushed to his seat. Mr Gao glared (怒视) at the rest of the students. The chuckles (轻声笑) quickly stopped. Patric's classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Patric's late arrival and his odd appearance, which usually included improper clothing. That day, it was the pajama top and green sandals.
Patric lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school every day. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry classmates in the bus, he would wave kindly. Although Patric was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Kevin, who sat next to Patric , tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Patric did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Kevin decided to walk over to Patric's house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Patric must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Kevin let himself in. He called Patric's name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Kevin peered (仔细看) in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Patric was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow (琴弓) over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly (完美无瑕地), so much so that it sounded like a recording. Kevin left quietly.

As the last note(音符) ended, there was a moment of silence.

One day my grandfather gave me a gift ——a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea:the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up. "When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy deli-cious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without tak-ing any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

Everybody has a surprise event in their life. This even can be positive or negative depending on who gave you a surprise or how you took it. Also, there are many ways in which you think that the surprise could have been better. One of the biggest surprises that I ever got was the one on my birthday.
Just few days before my birthday I realized that none of my friends was going to be around. This was because my birthday is during the holidays. Usually my friends make it a point that they are around during my birthday but this does not always happen. Most of the time, few of my friends are there, but this time none of my friends were around. I even called my cousins but even they had plans. I was disappointed and unhappy. I even told my parents that I did not want to celebrate my birthday this year.
My parents told me that I could go to my grandparent's place and celebrate my birthday. However, even that was not possible, as my grandparents had already planned to go to my uncle's place. I was extremely sad and unhappy that I would be all alone on my birthday.
Deep down, I knew my parents were trying their best to make me feel better, but it was hard to shake off the sadness. I couldn't help but wonder why this surprise event had turned out this way. In my mind, I imagined countless ways in which the surprise could have been better, such as having my closest friends show up unexpectedly or receiving a thoughtful surprise gift.
The day of my birthday arrived. I got up in the morning. Despite the initial disappointment, Itried my best to keep an open mind and make the most of my special day, even if it meant celebrating alone. I reminded myself that surprises aren't always perfect, and that sometimes life throws unexpected challenges on our way. I went down to have my breakfast after a long time and as I went down the stairs, I saw all my friends, cousins and my grandparents there.

One sunny Sunday morning, Lily woke up to an unusual silence in the house. Normally, the smell of pancakes would float through the air as her mom busied herself in the kitchen, but today there was nothing. Concerned, Lily decided to check on her mom.
She knocked softly on her bedroom door. "Mom, are you okay " she called out. A raspy voice responded, "I'm not feeling too well, sweetheart. I've caught a bad cold. I don't want you getting sick too. You can fix yourself some toast for breakfast, and I'll stay in bed."
Lily felt sympathy for her mom. She must be feeling really under the weather if she couldn't even make breakfast. Determined to help, Lily decided to take charge of the morning routine. After enjoying her simple breakfast of toast, Lily noticed the sink (洗涤池) was filled with dishes. Without hesitation, she rolled up her sleeves and began washing them, just as her mom usually did. She washed each plate and glass thoroughly until they were shiny, determined to make the kitchen look as tidy as possible.
But Lily wanted to do more to help her mom feel better. Suddenly, inspiration struck. Lily remembered her mom mentioning that she had planned to plant flowers in the garden today. Maybe if she finished the job for her, it would bring a smile to her face. With newfound purpose, Lily put on her gardening gloves and headed outside. As she worked, she couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction as she carefully planted each flower, imagining her mom's delight when she saw them producing flowers.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," and my family started to think about how we could help.

20.(2024高二下·绍兴期中) 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事,
Henry was a college student at UC Santa Cruz. For years, he had been saving up to buy a decent used car. He had a part-time job at a local coffee shop. He repainted a room in his neighbor's house in his free time. He had an internship(实习)at a software company. He saved a lot: Christmas money, birthday money, a penny here, a penny there.
While Henry worked to buy a car, Hua Kuan had a car to sell. Kuan was born and lived in Mexico for about 13 years. His parents had immigrated there from China.
In Mexico, he didn't really grow up in a very nice area. He had to work when he was young, a lot of restaurant work—cleaning dishes, bussing tables.
Kuan's family headed north to California in the late 1990s. A few years later, he was awarded a full scholarship to UC Berkeley. During Kuan's junior year, his proud parents bought him a first car.
Kuan's parents were blue-collar workers, and worked very hard for their money. They bought the car for their son, which was the only gift they were able to provide for him. And Kuan had been driving that car since it was brand new for about 14 years.
However, Kuan is a 35-year-old dentist now. His friends convinced him to upgrade his ride, so he listed his beloved car for sale on Craigslist. By chance, Henry saw the ad for the black car with gold wheels and over 150,000 miles. However, it was priced at $
7000. He fell in love with the car the first time he saw it, and thought it just might be the one. Although it was a little bit over his budget, he determined to take a chance.

1.范文:
My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her. When she came to the bathroom door and demanded that I come out and have a meal, I burst out of the door, tears streaming down my cheeks. Before she stopped me, I stormed into my room and banged the door. Looking into the mirror. I saw a girl with more and darker freckles on her face. Only then did I realize that the cream had side effects when wearing it in the sun. I threw myself down on the bed and sobbed.
After what seemed a century, I heard a gentle knock on my bedroom door. Hesitating for a moment, with red eyes and still wet cheeks, I opened the door. At the door stood my mother with a big bunch of tiger lilies, which were covered with black spots but amazingly beautiful. I stared at her in surprise, not knowing what to say. My mother gave me a warm hug. "There are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful and sweet," she said. Hearing this, and smelling the fragrance of the tiger lilies, the freckles on my face seemed to have magically disappeared.

5.Seeing my condition, my family advised me to make the most of the time that was left before they moved. They encouraged me to create more memories that could be cherished forever. These moments were bittersweet, filled with laughter and tears, reminding us of the strong bond we shared. It was a time of reflection, appreciating every moment spent together, and acknowledging that true friendship isn't bound by distance.
Saying goodbye wasn't easy, but it set my heart at ease to realize that we could still be the closest friends. We made promises to stay in touch through video calls, texts, and social media. As they left, we hugged tightly, whispering reassurances of meeting again. The departure was a pivotal moment for me, teaching me resilience and the value of friendships that withstand the test of time and distance. This experience, although painful, prepared me for future farewells and reinforced the idea that some bonds are indeed unbreakable, no matter where life takes us.

10.I said to the receptionist, "Could you please give those to Anna " The receptionist, a warm and friendly man looked at me in confusion and I continued, "She's the cleaning lady who has been taking care of my room every day during my stay here. I really appreciate all the extra effort she put in to make sure my room was clean, even when I thought it didn't need to be. I want to show her my gratitude." The man smiled and nodded in understanding. "Please wait a moment, Anna is in the building. I'll call her, and you can thank her in person."
After a while, Anna arrived, looking slightly puzzled. When she saw the box of chocolates, her eyes lit up with surprise and joy. She thanked me earnestly, clearly touched by the gesture. It was heartwarming to see her smile and know that I had made her day just as she had made mine. This simple act of appreciation made me realize the impact of showing gratitude and kindness to others, even in small ways. From that day on, I made it a point to always express my appreciation for the hard work of others, just like Anna had done for me.
