Skiing has been around since early civilization, evidenced by a 5,000-year-old rock carving representing men on skis hunting deer in Norway, and the discovery of a ski dating back to 6000 B.C. found in Vis, Russia. Historians debate where skiing first got its start, though; some argue that it was in Altay, China, in 8000 B.C.
Modern skiing, however, can date back to the Scandinavians, who mainly used skis as a means of travel or for other practical purposes, particularly the Indigenous Sámi people in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, writes Raymond Flower in The History of Skiing and Other Winter Sports. Norse myths (挪威神话) even described Ull, a winter god, on skis with curved tips and included other stories of heroes and goddesses skiing down mountains.
Some of the first official competitions began around 1850 in Norway, with the first recorded race in Sweden held outside Stockholm in 1879. Skiing became a household word with the publication of the popular book offering a thrilling account of Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen’s difficult and historic journey on skis across Greenland in 1888.
The sport spread to the Swiss Alps, where it was enjoyed largely by British vacationers, before clubs popped up around the world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Variations of the sport developed over the years, such as the slalom race (障碍滑雪), downhill jumping, and mountaineering. The British are largely credited with transforming skiing from its Scandinavian roots into the highly competitive sport it is now. In 1921, they developed rules that became widely accepted and adjusted the slalom race to include flag gates to test the skill of skiers’ turns.
Skiing then exploded in popularity after World War II, when ski resorts (胜地) gradually developed to receive single-day skiers as well as those taking longer vacations.
4. What can we learn about Raymond Flower
A. He wrote about skiing. B. He invented skiing.
C. He recorded Norse myths. D. He was good at rock carving.
5. Why did skiing become a well-known word in the late 1800’s

6. Who contributed most in changing skiing to a more competitive sport
A. The Swiss. B. The British. C. The Norse. D. The Finn.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. How Did Skiing Develop in Norway B. Why Did People Kill Time by Skiing
C. What Are Skiing Adventures All About D. What Are the Ancient Origins of Skiing

“We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu (712 — 770). These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,”said Harvard professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu, China’s Greatest Poet, a BBC documentary.
Despite the fact that Du Fu is usually mentioned in the same breath as Dante and Shakespeare, he has remained largely unknown in the Western world for long. However, with the screening of the first English-language documentary feature about the poet, the days of Du Fu as China’s best-kept literary secret seem to be just numbered.
It is written and presented by Michael Wood, a skilled television historian who also directed other China-related documentaries such as The Story of China (2016) and The Story of China’s Reform and Opening Up(2018).
From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges, and down to the forested hills of Hunan province, Wood visited a number of places such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an. Along the way, he met and talked to ordinary people, dancers and musicians, who helped to tell the fantastic story of the poet. Interviews with famous scholars specializing in Chinese literature also helped present a clearer picture of the poet’s life experiences, literary significance and his friendship with Li Bai, another great Chinese poet.
Born in 712, Du Fu lived in the Tang Dynasty, a time marked by extraordinary cultural achievements. However, after a civil unrest, Du Fu, the former civil servant at the Tang court, was forced to be come a porter, and suffered from starvation. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his-country and people as well as celebrating the simple joys of life.
Du’s poetry reflects the country’s historical events mirrored in his own spiritual journey, so he becomes a part of the emotional vocabulary of Chinese culture, said Stephen Owen, who in 2016 completed the eight-year-long project to translate DuFu’s 1,400 poems into English.

There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”
I memorized every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn't hold my hand much anymore. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now.
But when you've been needed so much for such a long time, it's hard to step back and feel unnecessary.
Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways than before.
That scene has replayed in various ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.
12. How did the author get along with her children when they were young
A. She was very strict with them. B. She overprotected them.
C. She was too busy to take care of them. D. She developed a close bond with them.
13. How did the author feel when her kids became more independent
A. She felt lonely when living apart from them.
B. She was worried that they couldn't manage themselves.
C. She felt a little uncomfortable when not needed so much as before.
D. She was pleased to be able to step back and enjoy herself.
14. The author's visit to her son in New York made her realize________.
A. her son had become mature and reliable
B. time with children is always fun
C. she needed her son more than before
D. she was unwilling to accept the change in their roles
15. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text
A. To explore how to interact with children.
B. To describe the growth of her children.
C. To show the power of the touch of a hand.
D. To present how parents influence their kids.

Winners and Losers in the Race of Life
Our societies have advanced tendencies to label certain people ‘winners’ and others — logically enough — ‘losers’.___16___
And yet the more confusing and complex truth is that life is really made up of a number of races. There are races for money and fame. But there are also races that measure other kinds of skills worth respecting. There is a race for who can remain calmest in the face of frustration. ___17___ There are races focused on how good they are at getting pleasure from autumn fruits.
A striking fact about the multi-race event of life is, quite simply, that no one is ever able to end up a winner in every genre of competition available. ___18___ When we have failed in certain races in the long journey of life, we keep ample opportunities to train and develop our strength to win in others. We may never again be able to compete in the race for fame, honor or money, but it’s still entirely open to us to compete in the race for kindness, friendship and forgiveness. We may even win at the not insignificant race for enjoying one’s own company or sleeping very soundly.
___19___ There is only a person who has won in some areas and messed up in others. We never entirely fail at life itself. When we feel depressed and isolated, the universe is just giving us another chance. ___20___ Only by showing gratitude to life can we learn to win.
A. Let’s smile to life.
B. They will lose in the less familiar races.
C. In that case, life might be a singular race.
D There is no such thing as a winner or a loser in nature.
E. There is a race measuring how gifted someone is at friendship
F. If so, it follows that one cannot be a loser at everything either
G. One could neatly rank all the competitors from highest to lowest.

My efforts to learn, read, write and speak English have been a significant challenge in my life. When I first came to the United States from Hong Kong about 12 years ago, I could barely communicate in English. Today, although I still have much to learn, I realize I have made a good amount of progress in my years abroad.
I grew up in a small village in China, where no one I knew spoke English. I wasn’t exposed to English or any other language through books, magazines or TV. Only when I later went to study in Hong Kong, was I exposed to American and Western culture through movies, music and other media. Although English is common in Hong Kong due to its history, I still couldn’t speak, read or write much after graduating from high school.
In my early 20s, I decided to move to New York City and I was determined to make a new life for myself there. However, I didn’t want to end up speaking my native language because I knew that learning English was very important if I wanted to be successful in this new country. New York seemed like another world and without speaking much English it was even more difficult to make friends.
I didn’t have a teacher at first, so I tried every way I could to learn the language. One way that was very useful was listening to the radio and watching TV, mostly news. I tried to speak like the people I heard on TV. They spoke more clearly and it was easier to understand than the English I heard people speaking in my neighborhood. I picked up one word at a time, and looked them up in the dictionary. I would also try to write down the words and remember them. I made a goal of learning at least 20 new words every day.
注意:
1. 续写词数应150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After a while I made friends.

【答案】Last Sunday witnessed an extraordinary hiking, which nearly drew the attention of every student and teacher of Senior Three.
Bathed in the warm sunshine, we arrived in our destination on foot, talking and laughing. In the park, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery, which was a visual feast. Additionally, some students gave us their marvelous performance, making us burst into laughter.
By immersing everyone in the charm of nature, this activity definitely offers relaxation to us. Not only can it strengthen our perseverance, but it enhances our friendship.
第二节(25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
After a while I made friends. They were another way I learned English. I would pick up a lot of cool expressions just from spending time with them and listening to them speak. My friends were patient with me and helped me a lot, but I often became discouraged. Seeing I gave up speaking English, they tried to encourage me to speak out. They often invited me to their parties where I was surrounded by English atmosphere and I was forced to communicate with them in English.
Thinking back on the ways I have learned English over the years, I have something to say. It is clear that I am a visual learner — I learn by seeing and looking. I had the most success when reading and using written materials. I enjoyed reading books, newspapers and magazines. Of course, it is also very important to be able to speak and listen. So, I spent lots of time trying to develop these skills, like getting involved in social activities with friends. So, if I could become more and more fluent, so can you!
