It was while touring Mississippi that John Ingall first spotted the plant that would change his life: the hardshell gourd (葫芦), a squash-like fruit with a thick, woody skin. After that, he saw them almost everywhere he went: carved gourds in porches, hanging gourds, gourds reimagined as lanterns and bird boxes. “I developed an interest,” Ingall says.
Ingall worked for 45 years as a farmer, but had never seen fruit turned into art before, nor considered himself in the least bit artistic. “I was so involved with farming, I didn’t have time to be. But I thought, ‘I’ll try it.’”
When he returned to his farm in Warwickshire, Ingall planted a few among the tomatoes. In no time, the vines had grown to 6ft tall. Walking through the tunnel some weeks later, he parted the foliage and was surprised to see some enormous fruit growing.
Ingall grew up in the Kent countryside, and knew from childhood that he wanted to be a farmer. His father was a banker, his mother a housewife. “They were very against me going into farming,” he says. But Ingall was set on the idea: “I had a pretty romantic idea of what it would be like farming and living in the countryside.” Over that period, Ingall’s establishment evolved gradually through 15 years of intensive dairy farming to less intensive beef farming, then organic farming and now, to rewilding.
“I don’t really enjoy surprises. I like things to progress steadily.” he says. Yet his gourds have empowered him to surprise himself. “I’d like to introduce gourd art to more people here. It’s a form with great potential.”
Ingall started by making lanterns, and now incorporates (包含) stained glass into the shells. He also creates what are known as thunder gourds: “Fix a drum skin to it, and when you shake it, it makes a sound like thunder. People come to our open studio, see a gourd hanging and don’t know what it is. Then I shake it — and jaws drop.”
As well as selling gourds through his personal studio, Ingall markets them at art fairs, donating profits to fight the climate crisis. “It’s very fulfilling. Gourds are an entirely sustainable canvas for many types of art.” he says.
4. What did Ingall find during his Mississippi tour
A. A new plant native to the city. B. An innovative farming method.
C. The city’s art environments. D. Gourds turned into works of art.
5. What do we know about Ingall as a farmer
A. He became rich by farming. B. He improved the crop variety.
C. He liked change in a controlled way. D. He was grateful to his parents’ opposition.
6. What was special about Ingall’s gourd art
A. It can surprise people. B. It is environment-themed.
C. It is for personal collection. D. It will be put on the market.
7 What is the passage mainly about
A. A new art gaining global popularity.
B. A profitable plant with a potential market.

D. An artist with an environmental consciousness.

The debate over birth order and personality traits (特性) has been ongoing for over a century. After decades of contested claims, a handful of recent studies found there was little evidence for meaningful differences. But in a study published last week, psychologists have pushed back and claim there is an effect after all.
In one of the largest studies ever conducted on birth order, family size and personality, Canadian researchers gathered data from more than 700,000 volunteers and found that on average, middle children scored higher than their siblings (兄弟姐妹) on traits seen as important for cooperation.
Scores for the same traits were also higher in families with more children suggesting that people may be more likely to develop a cooperative personality when they are raised as part of a bigger group.
Michael Ashton, first author of the study, noted that individuals with more siblings were more likely to develop cooperative personalities. “A commonsense possibility is that when one has more siblings, one must more frequently cooperate rather than act on selfish preferences. This ongoing situation might then promote the development of cooperative tendencies generally”.
Researchers have guessed about the impact of birth order for more than a century. In 1874, the polymath Francis Galton, the youngest of nine siblings, gathered histories on a group of English scientists and found a large proportion were firstborns. He suspected the eldest received more attention from their parents, propelling them to greater intellectual heights. Decades later, the Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler claimed firstborns were often conscientious and responsible, while the youngest might become independent and creative as they looked for ways to stand out.
This new research lends some credence to Adler’s view, showing that middle children may indeed be more cooperative due to the unique position they hold in the family dynamic. They are often required to balance the needs of both younger and older siblings, fostering skills like negotiation and compromise.
8. What’s the finding of the Canadian study
A. Siblings are born the same.
B. Middle children shine in cooperation.
C. Birth order has little impact on personality.
D. A large family contributes to sibling harmony.
9. What are Michael Ashton’s words aimed at
A. Offering an explanation. B. Forecasting a global trend.
C. Presenting a new argument. D. Defending his research finding.
10. What does paragraph 5 of the text mainly focus on
A. Applications of the research finding.
B. Past theories the Canadian study builds on.
C. Previous studies on the impact of birth order.
D. Further explanations of the research methods.
11. What does the underlined word “credence” in the last paragraph mean
A. Denial. B. Pardon. C. Confusion. D. Acceptance.
D
Using LED lighting on the underside of surfboards could prevent great white shark attacks, new research suggests. According to an Australian-led study, underside lighting disrupted the ability of great whites to see silhouettes (轮廓像) against the sunlight above, reducing the rates at which the sharks followed and attacked the artificial prey (猎物).
The study’s lead author, Dr Laura Ryan of Macquarie University, said the animal has a far lower visual acuity — the ability to see shapes and details — than humans. Her work has suggested that young great white sharks are unlikely to be able to clearly tell seals apart from swimmers or people paddling surfboards.
The team tested multiple light treatments: covering the underside of the decoys (诱饵) with weak, intermediate and bright LED lighting and strobe lighting, as well as horizontal and vertical strip lighting. After each tow with one of the light treatments, they immediately towed a control decoy seal without any underside lighting. As an extra experiment, they did paired tests where the unlit control dummy was towed 3 metres away from the illuminated (点亮) dummy.
The unlit decoys were attacked or followed by sharks more than any of the illuminated decoys. The brightest light seemed to be most effective, with zero predator incidents seen when the decoy’s illumination was most radiant. Vertical strip lighting was less effective than the horizontal strips, possibly because it broke the silhouette into longer sections that could still be identified as a seal, says Ryan. The strobe lighting was less effective than continuous lighting, perhaps because the sharks could still see the silhouette of what they thought was prey between flashes.
The team is testing a surfboard prototype with fitted lighting. “Surfers can be a little bit fussy with their surfboards,” Ryan said. “As a surfer, I want it to be usable.” But Ryan warns that the illumination deterrent hasn’t been tested on other species known to attack people, such as tiger sharks and bull sharks, which have different hunting strategies.
12. According to the study, what might cause sharks’ attack on humans
A. Colour blindness. B. Mistaken identity.
C. Strong sunlight. D. Survival needs.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The process of the experiment. B. The subjects of the experiment.
C. The follow-up study of the experiment. D. The theoretical basis of the experiment.
14. What can be an implied way to prevent shark attacks on humans
A. Using vertical strip lighting. B. Covering a surfboard entirely in lights.
C. Keeping the lights on the surfboards out. D. Lengthening the horizontal strip lighting.
15. What is Ryan’s attitude towards the research finding
A. Disapproving. B. Optimistic. C. Unclear. D. Cautious.

It’s through these meandering jottings that ideas will take shape.
Work out your structure. Once you’re making some headway with your story and you’re getting words down on the page, take some time to think about the structural features of your novel. Will your story span a week, a year, a lifetime ___20___ Making key decisions about structure and the means of telling your story can help you get off on a sure footing.

It was another sunny afternoon at Maple High School. Jack and his friends rushed to the soccer field as soon as the final bell rang. The field was their kingdom, and soccer their passion.
“Pass it here, Jack!” shouted Mike, waving his arms. Jack dribbled the ball skillfully, his feet moving like magic. The game was intense, with both teams tied at 2-2. When Tom passed the ball to Jack, he saw an opening. With all his strength, he kicked the ball towards the goal.
The ball soared through the air—but not towards the goal. It flew over the fence, straight towards their classroom building. The boys watched in horror as the ball crashed through a second-floor window with a loud shattering (打碎) sound.
Everyone froze. The once lively field fell silent. Jack’s heart pounded as he recognized the broken window — it was their own classroom.
“Let’s get out of here!” Tom whispered urgently. “No one saw us. We can just pretend it never happened.”
Jack wiped the sweat from his forehead, his mind racing. The setting sun cast long shadows across the field. He looked at his friends’ anxious faces and then at the broken window.
“No,“ Jack said firmly. We should tell Mr. Thompson. It’s the right thing to do.”
“But we’ll get in trouble!” Mike protested.
“Maybe” Jack admitted. “But if we don’t tell, we’ll always know we did something wrong. Besides, what if someone got hurt by the broken glass ”
The boys argued for several minutes, but Jack’s determination finally convinced them. Together, they walked to their teacher’s office, though their steps grew slower with each passing moment.
When they arrived, the office was empty. A note on the door said Mr. Thompson had left for a meeting.

A Youth Volunteer Activity Celebrating World Wildlife Day
To mark the 12th World Wildlife Day, the Students’ Union of our school organized a publicity campaign in the downtown area last Sunday morning.
All volunteers threw themselves into various activities. Exhibition boards were set up showcasing the crucial importance of wildlife in maintaining a balanced eco-system, as well as China’s progress in wildlife protection. Youth volunteers also distributed leaflets to the passers-by, popularizing knowledge about how to live in harmony with wildlife.
The campaign has received a positive feedback. Not only has it enhanced our awareness of wildlife conservation, but also it has further fuelled our sense of social responsibility.

【答案】
Relief and uncertainty washed over the group. Some whispered, “Maybe it’s a sign we shouldn’t tell,” while others felt uneasy about leaving without resolving the matter. Jack, however, insisted, “We can’t just walk away. Let’s leave a note — it shows we’re serious about taking responsibility.” Jack took out a piece of paper and wrote: “Dear Mr. Thompson, We accidentally broke our classroom window while playing soccer after school. We’re very sorry and will pay for the repair.” He slipped the note under the door, feeling both nervous and relieved.
The next morning, Jack was called to Mr. Thompson’s office. To his surprise, Mr. Thompson wasn’t angry. “I appreciate your honesty, Jack,” the teacher said. “It takes courage to admit mistakes. Because of your honesty, the school will cover the repair cost this time. But please, be more careful in the future.” Jack returned to class with a light heart, knowing he had done the right thing. From that day on, the boys always played soccer at the far end of the field, away from the buildings. And whenever someone suggested hiding a mistake, Jack’s story reminded them that honesty was always the best policy.
