阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tucker stood by the back door, his eyes fixed on the winter sky: crystal blue and not a single cloud. His breath made steamy circles on the chilled glass window. “I don’t think today’s the day, Tucker.” His father walked up beside him and looked outside. “It has to snow something, doesn’t it, Dad ” asked Tucker, a hint of regret in his voice as he surveyed the barren landscape. “Sure, boy,” his father stroked his fingers through Tucker’s hair and strode off toward the basement door.
Tucker’s gaze wandered beyond the backyard of his family’s new home. Just beyond a cluster of prickly pine trees, the flat ground pushed upward into a steep and empty hillside. Dad’s promise of a perfect sledding (乘雪橇) spot echoed in his ears, painting vivid pictures of exhilarating rides down the hill, faster and more thrilling than anything he’d experienced in the city.
Sledding. Tucker’s brand- new sled rested in the corner of his room, sandwiched between his dresser (梳妆台) and train table. It was perfect: bright blue with red and orange flames racing up its sides. Tucker loved the feel of the cool, smooth plastic yellow rope. He was sure it would be superfast. If only it would snow.
Determined to find some way to make the most of this snowless day, Tucker went down to the basement where he found his father waist- deep in a sea of flattened cardboard boxes. “Can you play chess with me, Dad ” Tucker pleaded. His father looked over the wall of boxes. “I promised your mom I’d get all these boxes broken down and ready for recycling. It won’t take long, Tucker. In a little while, we’ll find something fun to do, I promise.” But Tucker’s eyes had already lit up with a new found idea. As he caught sight of the duct tape (强力防水胶带) next to his father and the ramp (斜坡) formed by the cardboard boxes by accident, inspiration struck.

It was the second day in the new office and Maya was still on her own. Except the man who had taken her induction (入职), there was no one else who had said a “hi” to the young woman.
Not only was it a new office, it was also a new city. While she had successfully climbed the corporate ladder (阶梯) for a better salary, she hadn’t really made any friends in the new city or office yet. Looking at the whole workplace from her seat at the end of the hall, Maya felt an urge to cry. But she was a grown woman and that was simply not an option.
She decided to eat her lunch, as lonely as it might feel. Her lunch box revealed fried rice with vegetables and an old memory hit her from the depth of her mind.
It was fifteen years ago and their sports period had just been canceled. The children had brought some snacks from the school canteen to the classroom and were chewing noisily. The class teacher came in with a young girl. “This is Tina, new to Delhi and your school. Make her feel welcome, you all,” she said.
While the students said a big “hi” to her in chorus, that was all they did. Tina was seated right next to Maya, something the latter (后者) didn’t like. So, she turned to Tina and said, “My best friend sits next to me. You have been given this seat because she is absent today. Once she is back, you have to find yourself a new seat, OK ” Tina sadly nodded her head, but Maya didn’t care. As the popular girl in class, Maya had a lot going for her—she had many friends, the teachers loved her and she was the queen of debating. So, she hardly spoke to the new girl who sat next to her for a whole week.

When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch very obvious scar (伤疤) on her arm, “Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not notice it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.”
It never occurred to me that something like this would happen to my son years later. Sending a child off to college can certainly be stressful for concerned parents. It was in 2018 that my son went off to college. He rarely contacted us. I couldn’t help asking about other aspects, which sometimes made him complain that I didn’t treat him as an adult.
To be honest, my son is excellent. Some of my friends always tell me that they admire my son’s characters and they hope their sons could have some of them.
Unexpectedly, it was 4 o’clock in the morning in 2020, when I received the phone call. “This is the emergency room calling and your son was just brought in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have called for an aircraft and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was serious.
The doctor described the reason, which caused the burns. At 6 am, my son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they lit the charcoal, it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline. The flames caught my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
Fortunately, one of the boys who was quick-minded grasped my son and rolled him on the grass. While it saved his life, it was not in shape to save him from severe burns and terrible scars.
After he recovered from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery for 6 months because it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

Summer vacation starting, Steve and I planned to play baseball every day, aiming to join the freshman team. “If you make it into the team, I’ll buy you a new baseball glove as a present.” My mom’s promise echoed in my mind as I excitedly waited for Steve, staring at my worn-out glove.
But today I had to clean Mrs. Thompson’s garage first. She was weakened by old age, so my mom always volunteered me to help her. Mom wouldn’t let me accept any money, thinking she didn’t have much, and literally, I never minded — after all, Mrs. Thompson had knitted me five sweaters and always made me cakes. Most importantly, it was the right thing to do.
Steve came rushing out of his house, and I explained the situation. As expected, he immediately said, “Alright, I’ll help.”
We instantly got to work. The garage was a mess of boxes, but we gathered all our energy and soon brought the cleanup to an end. When arranging the last box, however, I nudged the shelf accidentally. Before I could react, a vase fell and crashed to the ground, broken into pieces.
I froze, my heart pounding. The vase was beautiful with delicate designs, which must have cost a fortune. Glancing at the open garage door, I suggested, “Maybe I can just sweep this up. Mrs. Thompson won’t even notice.” I responded fast and piled the pieces into the trash bin. But Steve’s expression darkened. “That’s not how it works. You should tell her what happened.”
I tried to justify myself, telling all the chores I’d done for Mrs. Thompson without pay. I even argued that it wasn’t my responsibility to pay for something I didn’t destroy on purpose. However, Steve wasn’t buying it, his voice firm. “You’re better than that. Be responsible.”
We stood there in silence, the weight of the moment hanging between us. Just then, Mrs. Thompson walked in, giving us a scare. She smiled warmly, unaware of the whole thing. “Boys, I baked a chocolate cake. Now come in for a piece. I really appreciate all your help.”

I recently received an email from Jack, one of my students, who said that he graduated from university and became a teacher in a secondary school. He is passing on the same love and warmth that his teacher gave him to his 32 students. This letter took me back 15 years.
One afternoon in April, I walked into a classroom as usual to guide my students, when an eight-year-old boy named Jack suddenly caught my attention. On his desk were glue and a lot of colored paper, which he was carefully folding. Jack was an introverted, dyslexic (诵读困难) child who rarely spoke. He was also slow to remember words.
When I saw Jack at work with his paper and glue, I didn’t disturb him. After a while, a beautiful paper plane emerged, then he wrote something on the wings with a pen, smiling happily.
As soon as the bell rang, he rushed out of the classroom, tightly holding the paper plane in his hand. He went to the playground and threw the paper plane with all his might. Jack ran back and forth on the playground with excitement and shouted, “I did it! I did it!” This was the first time I’d seen Jack happy.
In the following week, I began to observe Jack quietly and found that he carried a small bag in which there were many different kinds of paper planes, from point y ones to long-tailed ones to wide-winged ones. Every day after school, he would go to the playground and fly his planes, each with different words written on the wings. These observations showed me that Jack had strong hands-on abilities and a rich imagination. I felt that there was a huge potential hidden in his little body.
How could I use this knowledge to build his confidence I bought some origami (折纸艺术) books for him and started flying paper planes with him after school. Jack told me his dreams of going to space were written on the wings of each paper plane. He said that every time he flew a paper plane, his dream would be one step nearer. Suddenly, I had an idea of having a paper plane competition in class.

This incident occurred during our trip to Cape Cod ,a beautiful sea resort about three-hour drive from the city of Boston.
Our daughter Margaret who then lived in Salem close to Boston dropped us off at one of the pick-up points of the tour bus in Boston that morning. We decided to return home on our own as we thought that we could catch a local train back to Salem from Boston. Margaret insisted that she come to pick us up in the evening but we were confident of our ability to find our way and, not wanting to trouble her, refused her offer.
We had a great time in Cape Cod and returned to Boston at six in the evening. Yet by mistake, we got off the bus one stop before the actual Boston commuter rail station. My husband insisted that he had a very good memory and a keen sense of direction and so I blindly followed him, without knowing where we were heading to. It was not until around the rail's closing hour that we realized we were completely lost with the station nowhere in sight! It being a Sunday, the roads were deserted with not many people walking around. Worse still, our phones were out of battery. That was when we saw a young man coming from the opposite direction. We approached him and explained the situation. On hearing our problem, he personally took us to the station just a few blocks away.
Upon reaching there, we found to our disappointment that the dollar coins which we put into the ticket machine just fell through the outlet without printing our tickets. “Only credit card works,” a woman told us before she left.
Obviously, we confidently brought with us no credit card but only enough coins for the return tickets. As we turned around, we saw the young man still there.

A Valentine’s Day joke is a funny but super sweet way to celebrate love without being quite so serious! Old Lady Hayes deserved it. She often screamed at us for “borrowing” some roses from her garden. Well, she had it coming.
At least, that’s the way we saw it as George finished tying the string to the red, heart-shaped box. We giggled(咯咯笑)as Ron added the final touch: two plastic red roses, glued to the lid. George practiced pulling the box by the string. I couldn’t wait to see it fly away when she tried to pick it up.
I was the first to notice my dad in the doorway. I froze. Within seconds, my anxiety was shared by all. Dad walked slowly to the empty candy box. He picked it up, and watched it swing back and forth. Then he looked into the eyes of the frightened boys.
“It doesn’t seem so long ago that I was playing Valentine’s Day jokes.” he said. “One year my cousins and I decided to pull one on our grandma even though we loved her. We just wanted to have some fun. We tiptoed to her doorstep and drew a gift there with red paint. Then we kicked the door and hid behind the bushes. When Grandma finally appeared, she looked down and reached for the fresh paint. Slowly, she figured out our joke. She smiled, absently wiping red paint on her clean and white apron(围裙).”Dad paused and for the first time I noticed that his eyes were wet. “Grandma died later that year. I never had another chance to give her a real Valentine.”
Later that night a red heart-shaped box was placed on Mrs. Hayes’ front doorstep. As we hid behind the bushes, the cool night air wrapped around us, adding a chill to our excitement. “Do you think she’ll scream ” I whispered. “Maybe she’ll think it’s a real gift this time,” George replied, trying to hold back his giggles.

“Dad, can I have some cardboard boxes ” Tucker asked. “Sure, if you clean up when you’re done,” answered Dad. “And some duct tape, too ” Tucker continued. His father smiled, grabbed the duct tape, and tossed it to Tucker. Despite the cold, he was sweating from carrying a mountain of cardboard into the backyard. Happily, he lined the flat brown boxes, one after the other, up the hillside, and taped the undersides together until they had formed a ramp. It ran from the tiptop of the sledding hill, past the pine trees, and down to the middle of the backyard.
Tucker held the sled in place. Gripping the steering rope, and moving his feet into position, Tucker took a deep, frosty breath. He let out a scream as the sled raced down the slope, faster and faster. It came to a sudden stop in the crunchy grass. Tucker flew through the air and landed in a giggly heap. He jumped to his feet and raced back up the hill with his sled again and again. When the last of the daylight finally faded away, he lay back in his sled and gazed up at the darkening sky. Then he stuck out his tongue to catch the first thick, white flake swirling down from above. And he smiled.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Finally, Maya’s best friend returned to school after a fever attack. As expected, Maya’s friend reclaimed her seat next to Maya, displacing Tina once again. Tina, with tears welling up in her eyes, quietly packed her things and moved to an empty desk at the back of the classroom. Maya watched her go, feeling a pang of guilt but quickly dismissing it. However, this incident left a lasting impression on Maya, a reminder of how she had once been insensitive to the feelings of others.
So lost in thought was Maya that she didn’t notice a woman standing beside her. Tina smiled warmly and said, “Maya, long time no see. I hope you remember me.” Maya was taken aback, her mind racing back to those childhood days. Embarrassment and shame washed over her as she realized the impact her actions had on Tina. Tina, sensing Maya’s discomfort, gently placed a hand on her shoulder and said, “It’s okay, Maya. I just wanted to let you know that I forgave you a long time ago.” Maya smiled back, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. In that moment, she vowed to be more considerate to new faces in her current workplace.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The doctors suggested he return to college with scars of severe burns temporarily.

So I told him about Nancy’s childhood.

The doctors suggested he return to college with scars of severe burns temporarily. Although I knew that there were going to be storms in life, it was hard for me to imagine that a handsome and sunny boy would return to his classmates with scars. I really didn’t know how to comfort him. After all, the scars were on him. Not all of us could be able to turn that particular page successfully. It was at this time that I remembered what my mother said to my sister. It was those words that enabled her to overcome her psychological barriers and lead a smooth life.
So I told him about Nancy’s childhood. I passed the wisdom on to my son. Realizing my complex feelings, he smiled and comforted me instead. He took my advice to heart and returned to school with his head held high. By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars did not matter. So he made the decision to give up any plastic surgery. We all have “scars” that we believe will keep people away from us. Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value within yourself, and your beauty will shine through.

Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie Or could it have… ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.

Hesitantly, we entered the room and I noticed a gift box on the table beside the cake. “Could it be for me ” I wondered. Mrs. Thompson read my thoughts, “Your mom mentioned you’ re training for the baseball team, so I prepared this for you. Open it!” I unwrapped the box and a brand-new baseball glove was in sight! Immense guilt grew when I recalled all she did for me. Steve’s words also struck me, urging me to admit the mistake. I said in a low voice, “Mrs. Thompson, I’m sorry for breaking your vase in the garage by accident. I should pay for it.”
Having said that, I waited nervously for Mrs. Thompson to speak up. However, instead of disappointment, she just laughed. “Oh, that old vase was just a cheap thing I picked up at a dollar store. It is far less precious than your help and honesty. Don’t worry about it. Let’s enjoy the cake!” A bit relieved, I exchanged a look with Steve, eager to break in my new glove on the field and expecting another visit to Mrs. Thompson’s house. In his eyes, this time, shone a bright glimmer approving of my recovered sense of responsibility.

I started working with Jack every day to find out what kind of paper plane would fly higher and farther. I guided Jack to record the altitude and distance of different planes in his notebook, so as to improve and perfect them. Jack had particular difficulty in writing, but he worked hard to overcome it and kept learning and practicing. Day by day, Jack could finally form and read full sentences without losing any words. And his airplanes could fly higher and farther by properly using the wind and his own skill.
In the competition, Jack threw his paper plane at full force, making a beautiful arc (弧线) upward. The plane sailed through the air and landed at a distance of 15.12 meters. The children cheered and congratulated Jack for being the winner. I saw Jack’s eyes glistening with tears and a happy smile on his face. He gestured a love heart to me in the crowds. From then on, Jack became more and more confident, smiled more and more, and was willing to open his heart and communicate with every classmate in the school.

With no second choice, we explained to him our new embarrassment. The young man's face showed no sign of impatience. Instead, he immediately pulled out his wallet and used his credit card to buy our tickets. He then led us to the waiting area and told us the approximate time the train would arrive. We were so moved by his kindness that we could hardly find the right words to express our gratitude.
On reaching home, we realized we did not have his name or contact details. We felt a tinge of regret for not being able to thank him properly. However, his selfless act became a warm memory in our hearts. We told our daughter Margaret about this experience. She was also deeply touched. We all agreed that his kindness was like a bright star in the journey, and we would be inspired by him to offer help to others whenever possible, spreading this positive energy in our daily lives.

Just then, we heard the door click open. Out came Mrs. Hayes with a lamp in her hand. When her eye fell on the red, heart-shaped box, she leaned closer with a mixture of confusion and excitement. Driven by curiosity, she reached out her hand, picked it up and opened it with trembling hands. On seeing the candy, she could hardly contain her joy. A broad smile spread over her face. Seeing the surprise and happiness in her eyes, we couldn’t help giggling, covering our mouths with hands.
Hearing the giggles, Mrs Hayes looked up at the bushes. We had nowhere to hide, so we jumped out of the bushes, yelling “Happy Valentine’s Day!”. She stood rooted to the spot, speechless with surprise. Recovering from the shock, she walked to us and hugged us tightly, saying “Thank you all!” with tears of happiness welling up in her eyes. At the same time, a great wave of warmth swept over us. The box of candy would be treasured as it was a reminder of an amazing Valentine’s Day.
