At first, I tried to just work harder. But everything was becoming more 36 . At some point, if you don’t have eyesight, and you are trying to play a sport that you have to see the ball, it doesn’t matter how hard you work or how much you train. It becomes impossible for me to keep playing against people with 37 eyesight.
My elder brother is the one who got me started on the right way after I 38 rock bottom. He had swum for a couple of years and 39 me to try it. That brought me back to a better place mentally (精神上), and I was able to change from playing soccer to sports that I 40 do, like swimming, cycling, and running, and that is called triathlon (铁人三项).
I was lucky that my parents could 41 me. They worried about my safety, but never stopped me. In my senior year, I signed up for my first triathlon and I had never done anything like it before.

Naps (小睡) don’t just feel amazing — they are amazing. A study published in the magazine Heart found a relationship between healthy napping and a lowered risk of heart disease. The American Psychological Association points out that naps can improve memory, learning ability, immune system function (免疫功能) and mood. Sara Mednick, the writer of The Power of the Downstate, explains that when you fall asleep, your body moves through stages that each play a role in health.
Stage 1: the “dozing off” (打瞌睡) period
Stage 2: heart rate (率) and brain activity slow down
Stage 3: deep sleep
Stage 4: REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when brain activity increases and you’re most likely to dream
Ideal napping times are based around this four-stage cycle.
The 20-minute nap
Between 20 and 30 minutes is one napping sweet spot, according to Mednick, who explains that you get enough Stage 2 sleep to turn your body and mind into full relaxation mode, good for memory.
The 60-minute nap
Stage 3 sleep is a time for your body to repair itself, strengthen the immune system and recharge energy stores. But waking up during this stage can make you feel weak or rather ill, Mednick says. Most people start to move out of Stage 3 after around 60 minutes, which makes it a good time to set your alarm clock.
The 90-minute nap
A complete sleep cycle is about an hour and a half, and napping for a full cycle is of great help. But naps longer than 90 minutes can influence nighttime sleep and might even lead to a bad memory, according to a study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Not a regular napper That’s OK. “Everyone needs to rest, but not everyone necessarily needs to nap,” says Mednick.

“Look at this,” I said to my friend Mandy, holding up the leaflet. “There’s an art camp at White Cliff.”
“It’s during the last week of July,” Mandy said. “That’s the same time as the Hill County Fair.”
“Yeah, that’s true,” I said. “But we always go to the fair.”
“Tessa, you’re the artist. But I’m not good at drawing,” she smiled.
“But you can learn,” I said in my most encouraging voice.
Mandy giggled. “You sound like a TV advertisement.”
Later, I called my friends Emily and Yoshiko, but both of them were going to the fair.
“What’s this ” Mom asked.
“A leaflet for an art camp,” I explained.
“Would you like to attend ” Mom asked.
“Probably not,” I said. “None of my friends are going.”
Mom patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with strangers around. “Maybe next year.”
“Maybe,” I sighed. “I’m going outside to draw the Weston’s pine(松树).”
“Dinner will be ready in an hour,” Mom reminded me.
I opened the door and looked at the bright sunshine as I sat on the front door. I thought about the art camp and wished I felt a little braver. Mandy could make friends with a whole bus of kids in 10 minutes, but my stomach twirls (转动) like a roller coaster when I don’t know anyone around me.
Once I started drawing, I didn’t notice the sound around me. That’s why I jumped when Mr. Weston said, “You’ve done a great job capturing (刻画) the strength of that tree on paper.”
“Thanks,” I smiled. Mr. Weston was out for a walk.
“That pine was there when we moved in,” Mr. Weston said, “but I have planted pine trees before. You have to spread out the roots (根) near the surface so the tree can get enough water and grow tall. If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. I learned that roots grow out, not down.”
“That makes sense,” I said.
Mr. Weston nodded good-bye before continuing his walk.
I thought about what Mr. Weston told me as I looked at roots sticking out of the ground. I’d never realized how far a tree’s roots stretched (伸展) outward. It made me think about art camp and my own roots. I wasn’t stretching them out at all. Instead, I was planting myself into one deep spot because it felt safer. I suddenly realized that if I wanted to grow, I had to start stretching my roots out into new earth too.
That night, I took a deep breath and made a decision. I am stretching my roots out into new earth so I can grow, I thought. ▲ .

52. What can we infer from the story
A. Mr. Weston would get the picture from Tessa B. Tessa would take part in the art camp.

Science fiction stories have imagined people in the future living in underground cities on Mars and in space stations far from the sun. But if humans are to survive in those terrible environments, they will need ways to grow food using limited resources. Photosynthesis ( 光合作用), by which plants turn sunlight into sugar, might not work.
Now, some scientists are wondering if it’s possible to produce food more efficiently(高效) by giving up photosynthesis, just by growing plants in the dark.
The idea sounds as science fictional as cities on Mars. But a team of researchers has taken a first step toward realizing it with a study published in Nature Food. The research shows it is possible to grow algae, edible-yeast and fungi in the dark by providing them with a carbon-based chemical (碳基化学物质). The chemical didn’t come from plants, but instead was produced using solar electricity (太阳能发电). That is, this method took the place of natural photosynthesis with a partly artificial (人造的) process for turning sunlight into food. Their process is a kind of artificial photosynthesis, and the idea has been around for years and includes different ways of turning sunlight, water and CO2 into some chemicals.
The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture - including, perhaps, crops that can grow in the dark.
While other scientists doubt if it will ever be possible to redesign plant biology so completely, they are excited by the technology the researchers have invented and the team’s out-of-the-box idea about how to make food production more efficient.
“It’s worth keeping an open mind. The reward may be something we haven’t imagined yet.” said Lynn Rothschild, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center.

七、阅读短文,回答短文后的问题。(本大题共10小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Spring is coming, and it’s time to enjoy West Lake Longjing tea! Usually, we think workers will pick tea leaves by hand. But now, some Longjing tea is being picked by special workers — tea-picking robots!
In a tea garden in Hangzhou, a smart tea-picking robot invented by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University is working for the first time. “We take thousands of pictures of new tea buds (芽) and input them into the robot for it to learn. The robot uses an AI model to recognize (识别) the buds it should pick,” said Professor Chen Jianneng, member of the research team. This helps the robot find the right tea buds about 90 percent of the time.
The robot’s arm pulls and then sucks (吸) up the tea buds. These buds are quickly moved into a special box. Once the robot has collected all the buds from the area it’s working at, it moves the buds from the box to a main box that holds everything it collects.
The robot was made because there are not enough people to pick tea. In Zhejiang, about 400,000 pickers are needed now. “Picking is the greatest challenge for the development of the tea industry,” said Professor Wu Chuanyu, who leads the research team.
“About five years from now, the robots will do the job of picking West Lake Longjing tea instead of people,” Wu added.
