Washington DC’s Union Station receives about 40 million visitors per year. Its beautiful architecture, various
shops and dining options, as well as its history, make the station a popular destination.
History
The construction of Union Station was completed in April 1908. Daniel Burnham designed the Beaux Arts
building, which featured a jaw-dropping Main Hall. By the early 1940s,about 200,000 passengers would pass
through the station daily, as railways were the most popular means of long-distance travel at the time.
The station faced difficulties after the Second World War as plane travel became more popular. The facility
第 3页/共 12页
was turned into a new National Visitor Center in 1976, but for only a short time due to poor funding and
organization. Union Station reopened in 1988 with restored elements. Its next difficulty arose from an earthquake
that shook DC in August of 2011. By the fall of 2016, the entire Main Hall of the station had been restored.
Transportation Options at Union Station
Numerous transportation modes are available, including rail options like Metro, MARC trains and the Virginia
Railway Express. There is a taxi pick-up service at the Main Hall entrance that is open from 8 a. m. ~1 a. m. You
can also catch a bus or rent a car. Parking is available at the Union Station Parking Garage at 30 Massachusetts
Avenue NE. You can also book a sightseeing tour from Union Station through Old Town Trolley Tours.
Shopping & Dining at Union Station
The shopping options at Union Station are plentiful, including Walgreens, Warby Parker, Andrew’s Ties and
more. There’s also a restaurant for every taste. Quick options like Cava, Chipotle, Potbelly, and Taco Bell are on
site. You can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee. For bakery specialties, head to Cinnabon or

With arms outstretched, Shyanne Sellers smiled as her teammates surrounded her to celebrate her
buzzer-beating three-pointer (压哨三分球) that led to the win over the Purdue University basketball team. Shyanne’
s impressive basketball skills and confidence seem to come naturally—her dad, Brad Sellers, played alongside
Michael Jordan on the Chicago Bulls. But the wallpaper on her phone suggests another story.
The phrase “living strong, fighting long, till MS is gone” is to honor her mom, Kym Sellers, who’s battled
multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化症) for decades. “It just made me work really hard, just knowing that anything’s
第 4页/共 12页
possible if you put your mind to it,” she said of her mom’s fight. “People are like, ‘Oh, that’s so sad.’ but she doesn’
t make you feel like it’s sad. She’s just grateful for everything she can do.”
Growing up in Aurora, Ohio, as the youngest of four—all of whom played basketball—Shyanne could dribble
(运球) nearly before she could walk, Kym says, and the family had to hold her back from rushing onto the court at
her sisters’ games. And while Shyanne doesn’t remember a time when her mom could walk, she does recall Mom’s
efforts to get her started in the sport.
Kym signed Shyanne up for a 5-year-old rec league when she was 4. She was just so into it. The early
introduction, as well as Kym’s encouragement to play in the Amateur Athletic Union, led Shyanne to become a
professional player. Her family has been there throughout her journey, traveling to most games, home and away.
“What I love about her parents is that they allow me to coach her hard, and through that, you can see that
growth with Shyanne,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “It’s important to have those culture players within your
program that want to leave their own mark.”
As Shyanne looks to her future, she knows that her family’s love and support will continue to be crucial as she
fights for greatness.
4. What does Shyanne think of her mother
A. Generous. B. Ambitious. C. Patient. D. Optimistic.
5. What can we learn about Shyanne as a baby from paragraph 3
A. She had a natural talent. B. She was discouraged from playing.
C. She was taught basketball by her father. D. She didn’t enjoy playing with her sisters.
6. How did Shyanne start her basketball career
A. She was encouraged by her father.
B. Her mother signed her up for a basketball league.
C. She was coached by professionals from an early age.
D. She started playing after watching a basketball game.
7. What does Brenda appreciate about Shyanne’s parents
A. They support Brenda’s coaching method. B. They let Shyanne make her own decisions.
C. They allow Shyanne to play in more games. D. They encourage Shyanne to leave her mark.

advisers, student teachers, and I routinely discuss if what we are teaching future educators is sufficient. We still lose

many teachers in their first two to five years of service. That tells us we need to do more to welcome new teachers
into the profession — so says Tabitha Dell’ Angelo, dean of the School of Education at the College of New Jersey.
Dell’ Angelo believes that it’s important for new teachers to have mentors (导 师 ) with whom they can
cooperate and get honest feedback and guidance. She adds that this shouldn’t be a one-way relationship. Mentors
and administrators also need to be open and encourage new ideas that young teachers may bring to the table.
“Technologies, information delivery systems, and what we think we know have always been changing,” says
Jeremy Glazer, assistant professor at Rowan University. Yet, what doesn’t change, adds Glazer, is that new teachers
will continue to need deep knowledge in their content area, the ability to think critically and systematically, and the
ability to engage students in learning. The need to be a critical consumer of information, particularly in the era of
social media, remains important.
Currently, a team of student teachers in the childhood program at Brooklyn College, are experimenting
regularly with AI tools like MagicSchool and ChatGPT to plan lessons. Student teachers at Brooklyn College also
use online resources such as Culturally Situated Design Tools to ensure that the lessons they are designing are
culturally situated. This integration of AI and other tech tools is supporting college students at Brooklyn College to
use these instructional planning aids effectively.
For these student teachers, the goal is to gain not only competency and fluency in these tools, but also the
in-demand career skills that they can highlight in their teaching career. We must prepare teachers for their first year,
while preparing new teachers for a career within a world that is different than it is now.
8. What does Dell Angelo think is essential for new teachers’ development
A Their relationship with fellow workmates.
B. The job content of their first year of service.
C. Professional support from experienced teachers.
D. The new ideas they have about their new career.
9. What is Glazer’s attitude to traditional teaching skills
A He thinks they are still important.
B. He believes they are irrelevant today.
C. He thinks of them as secondary to technology.
D. He suggests they need to be replaced by new methods.
10. Why does the author mention AI tools in paragraph 4
第 6页/共 12页
A. To praise student teachers’ progress. B. To highlight student teachers’ efforts.
C. To show the difficulties in teaching. D. To stress the necessity of technology.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Welcoming Changes in the Classroom B. Exploring the New Future of Education
C. Supporting New Teachers in Their Careers D. Introducing Technology to Teacher Training

Earthworms (蚯蚓) are well-known for their ability to enrich and improve soil. Yet, their precise impact on
plant growth has remained a mystery. Now, two groundbreaking studies have found that they not only boost crop
yields (产量) but also protect plants from harmful microplastics.
In late 2023, a research team from Colorado State University (CSU) reported that earthworms are responsible
for 6.5 percent - or 140 million tons - of global food production annually. This is comparable to Russia’s annual
grain harvest, which is the world’s fourth largest.
CSU’s Steven Fonte and his team drew this conclusion after a comprehensive study. They surveyed
earthworm populations, soil qualities, and crop yields from around the world. The researchers focused on four
grains - rice, maize, wheat, and barley.
The team found that the earthworms’ impact was significant in developing countries. For example, they helped
increase grain yields by 10 percent in sub-Saharan Africa and 8 percent in Latin America. Fonte and his team
believe farmers in these regions likely lack easy access to chemical fertilizers (化肥). This makes them more reliant
on earthworm-rich organic matter, such as manure.
“Earthworms are contributing a lot in these areas where we have fewer chemical inputs,” Fonte said. “If we
manage our soils in a more sustainable way, we can better make use of this biodiversity and produce more
sustainable agroecosystems.”
Earthworms help plant growth in several ways. Their burrowing creates channels that loosen the soil and let in
fresh air. This allows water to run down from the surface and be stored underground. The earthworms’ constant
movement helps mix the soil’s organic matter, making the nutrients more available to plants.
In a 2024 study, scientists at Nankai University found that earthworms can also protect plants from
microplastic pollution. The researchers tested this by placing tomato plants in soil polluted by tiny plastics. They
found that when earthworms were present, the plants grew well despite the pollution. They were also able to drive
away common plant-eating insects. The scientists believe that earthworms help boost the tomato plants’ immune
systems. This makes them better withstand environmental changes.

12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The methods used in the study. B. The impact of microplastics on crops.
C. The types of grains studied in the research. D. Earthworms’ contribution to global food output.
13. What is one benefit of managing soil with earthworms
A Greater crop diversity. B. More sustainable farming.
C. Richer organic matter. D. Enough chemical fertilizer supply.
14. What does the underlined word “burrowing” in paragraph 6 mean
A. Transporting. B. Resting. C. Growing. D. Digging.
15. What did the Nankai University study find about earthworms
A. They killed insects harmful to plants.
B. They helped carry away microplastics.
C. They protected plants from environmental stress.
D. They grew well in spite of environmental pollution.

Most of us struggle for self-respect. Any comments or experiences that weaken our feelings of self-worth can
be uncomfortable. But the thing is, whether your self-worth really is being weakened is, to a large degree,
subjective. ___16___
When you take things personally, you’re interpreting these situations as saying something negative about you.
Say your friends cancel your planned get-together. ___17___ Psychologists have a term for this mindset:
personalisation. But the reality might be that your friends felt unwell that weekend.
In examples like this, there’s another process at work that psychologists call mind reading. This is when you
assume to know what other people are thinking about you when you can’t really know without asking them directly.
___18___
One simple way to avoid these mindsets is to challenge your negative assumptions. When you find yourself
taking a situation personally, try to think of other interpretations that are less focused on you. When receiving
criticism, try putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. ___19___ For instance, the person giving feedback might
also feel nervous about delivering it. This mindset can transform criticism into a learning opportunity and
strengthen relationships.
第 8页/共 12页
Wanting to be proud of yourself is healthy. ___20___ Try to take pride in your efforts, good intentions and
achievements. This shift in focus will also help you become less sensitive and less likely to take things personally.
A. But pride comes in different forms.
B. Try to see yourself in a positive light.
C. But they might think very highly of you.
D. You may interpret this as meaning they’re bored of you.
E. Much of it depends on your perception of what someone said or did.
F. When you do this, you’ll be able to see things from their point of view.
G. When assuming your friends are bored of you, you’re engaging in mind reading.

Rita had always loved dogs. As a child, her family had a dog, a faithful companion she adored. But one day,
the dog went missing, and despite all their efforts to find it, they never saw it again. That heartbreak left a lasting
mark on Rita, making her particularly sensitive to the safety of stray (无主的) or lost animals.
One sunny afternoon, Rita was driving home from work when something unusual caught her eye. Near a small
auto repair shop on the side of the road, she saw a Golden Retriever (金毛寻回犬) sitting by itself. The dog looked
dirty, with oil marks on its fur. There was no one nearby, and the dog had no collar visible. Rita’s heart sank.
“Could this dog be lost ” she wondered, her thoughts flashing back to her childhood and the pain of losing her own
dog.
第 11页/共 12页
She drove past the dog, but couldn’t stop worrying about what might happen to it. “What if it gets hit by a car ”
she thought. “Or worse, what if someone takes it for the wrong reasons ” At the next crossing, Rita turned her car
around and drove back to where the dog was.
When she arrived, the dog was still there, sitting quietly and looking around as if waiting for someone. Rita
parked her car and approached it slowly. “Hey there,” Rita knelt down and said softly. The dog wagged (摇) its tail.
It seemed gentle and trusting. “Come with me,” Rita called. She opened the car door, and the dog jumped in, As
she drove, the dog occasionally looked out of the window, barking softly as if calling for someone.
Back at home, Rita gave the dog a bath, washing away the dirt and oil. Then she took a short video of the dog,
explaining where she had found it, and posted it on her social media accounts. She wrote, “I found it near the auto
repair shop on Oak Street. It seems like it might be lost. Please share to help find the owner.”

46.Dear Editor,
I hope this email finds you well. I would like to suggest inviting our British exchange students to contribute
articles to the school English newspaper.
This initiative would provide them with an opportunity to share their experiences, cultural insights, and
impressions of our school. It would also help our students better understand British culture and improve their
English skills. Moreover, such articles would promote cross-cultural communication and strengthen the bond
between our students and the exchange students.
I believe this would be a meaningful addition to our school newspaper. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,

47.To her surprise, it wasn’t long before a repair shop owner messaged her. He explained, “My dog, Max, loves
to play outside the shop. Two days ago, one of my neighbors saw someone put him in a car and drive off. I’ve been
worried sick trying to find him.” Rita felt a sense of guilt as she pieced everything together. The repair shop and the
oil marks on Max’s fur now made perfect sense. She also remembered how the dog had barked at the window,
likely trying to tell her it wanted to go back.
“I’m so sorry,” Rita replied to the man. “I thought Max was a stray.” The next day, Rita drove back to the
repair shop with Max. When they arrived, the dog jumped out of the car and ran straight to the man, its tail wagging
excitedly. “Thank you for taking care of him,” the man said to Rita. “You have a good heart.” Rita smiled, “I’m just
glad Max is back where it belongs.” Though it had been a misunderstanding, her actions had come from a place of
love — the same love she’d felt for her childhood dog.
