Zhang Junru, a 7-year-old girl from Southwest China’s Chongqing who has inspired many people with her perseverance in mastering the ability to walk, made her first performance on stage.
Nicknamed Doudou, Zhang was born prematurely (早产). At the age of two, she was diagnosed: with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). Her parents were told she would “never be able to stand up”.
Yang Jinfeng, Doudou’s mother, looked after her full-time and took her to a therapy center in Chongqing. Doudou also showed her determination, sticking to training every day although she had to endure the pain. With her never-give-up attitude, Doudou gradually left her wheelchair and learned how to walk when she turned 5, making a miracle recovery.
In August of last year, Zhang became a primary school student at Yucai Experimental School in Chongqing’s Jiulongpo District. When her mother told her she was admitted into the primary school, Doudou said, with a mix of joy and relief (放心), “I thought they didn’t want me.” When a video capturing the moment was posted online, people were deeply moved by Doudou’ s reaction.
On her first day of school, Doudou walked into her classroom with a smile on her face. For her convenience, Yang was allowed to accompany (陪同) her daughter to school for a while.
The teachers and her classmates also worked together around Doudou and showed how they cared about her. Four months later, Doudou gave her first performance on stage, along with her I classmates, at a community New Year celebration.
Yang said that being able to perform on stage was an unexpected surprise for both her daughter and herself. She practiced with her daughter and cheered for her backstage before the performance, and Doudou replied with a bright smile.

A 63-year-old Chinese man who only started learning ballet (芭蕾) ten years ago has gone viral (走红) on social media. He is a living example that you are never too late to follow your dreams.
Liu Ziqing has been a fan of ballet for as long as he can remember. He fell in love with it as a little boy, but he never really got the chance to practice it himself. Growing up in a poor family in a village near Baotou, the largest city in Northern China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, he mainly focused on helping his family and putting food on the table. Dancing was a luxury (奢侈) he could not afford. He ended up becoming a farmer but also worked as a street cleaner in order to make ends meet. But he never got over his love for ballet, and at the age of 53, he decided to become a ballet dancer.
“One day, I saw a ballet basic training course on TV, which sparked the idea that I should try to learn to dance,” Ziqing said in an interview.
Becoming a ballet dancer at the age of 53 wasn’t an easy thing. Most of his friends just didn’t understand why he put himself through this hard training at his age. But Liu Ziqing ignored (忽略) them all with the help of his family, who always supported him.
Not only does ballet make him a happy man, but he is completely sure that it has done wonders for his health as well. “In the past, I had stomach problems. After dancing over the past years, the stomach problems have mostly gone away,” the 63-year-old ballet dancer said. “I am now doing what I wanted to do when I was young.”
29. How old was Liu when he started learning ballet
A. 50. B. 53. C. 60. D. 63.
30. What did Liu mainly do when he was young
A. He danced a lot. B. He cleaned the street.
C. He helped his family. D. He had stomach problems.
31. What can we infer from the passage

B. You shouldn’t fall in love with something when you’re young.
C. With the support of your family, your dreams can come true.
D. You’re never too old to follow your dreams.
C
If you want to describe something as nice and easy, you can say it is “a tea party”, but if something is very hard, you can say it is “no tea party”. Maybe you took a very long journey by bus to visit your family and the bus was not very comfortable. Then you could say, “Well, that bus ride was no tea party, but I’m here!”
“A tempest in a teapot” or “a storm in a teacup” is when something makes people angry or worried, but isn’t actually very serious. A “tempest” is a storm, but one that’s small enough to be in a teapot can’t cause much damage (损害). Perhaps your bus was late to arrive, and it made all the passengers very angry. You could tell your family, “Everyone was angry about waiting, but then the bus arrived, so it was a storm in a teacup really.”
Fruitcakes are often eaten at Christmas with black English tea. Calling someone “nutty as a fruitcake” is a way of saying they’re crazy. This is because “nutty” and “nuts” are also ways of saying crazy, and fruitcakes are usually made with both fruit and nuts. So if your cousin asked if you were taking a bus home when you left, you might say, “You must think I’m nutty as a fruitcake. I’ m going to fly home!”
32. “That bus ride was no tea party.” means that bus ride was ________.
A. creative B. difficult C. enjoyable D. meaningful
33. When Jim gets too angry about a small mistake, what can you say
A. It is no tea party. B. It’s really a tea party.
C. It is a tempest in a teapot. D. He isn’t nutty as a fruitcake.
34. If someone is nutty as a fruitcake, they are ________.
A. comfortable B. very friendly C. angry or worried D. very strange or mad
35. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. table manners B. English idioms (习语)
C. traditional foods of England D. different ways of learning English
D
Ola Kozak is happy. The 11-year-old, who loves music and drawing, expects to have more free time for her hobbies after Poland’ s government ordered strict limits (限制) on the amount of homework in the lower grades.
The government announced the ban against required homework in April, 2024. Teachers are no longer to give required homework to kids in the first to third grades. In grades four to eight, homework is now optional (可选择的) and it doesn’t count towards a grade. But not everyone likes the change.
“If there is something that will make students enjoy school more, then it will probably be good both for the students and for the school,” said Ola’s father.
However, Ola’s mother said she wasn’t pleased. She believes homework is a good way to remember what was learned at school during the day.
Teachers aren’t sure either. The head of the Polish Teachers’ Union said many teachers thought this happened too quickly.
Discussions on the proper amount of homework are common around the world. While some studies have shown that homework may not really help young learners, other experts say that it can help them learn how to develop study habits.
In ROK, homework limits were set for elementary schools in 2017. However, teenagers often study long into the night in order to pass tests at school and get into university.
In America, teachers and parents decide for themselves how much homework to give. Some elementary schools have done away with homework entirely to give children more time to play, participate in activities and spend time with families.
Pasi Sahlberg, a Finnish educator and writer, said that the value of homework depends on what it is and how it is linked to the whole learning. “We need to trust our teachers to decide what is good for each child,” Sahlberg said.
36. Who may be happy about Poland’s strict limit on homework
A. The children. B. The parents. C. The teachers. D. The experts.
37. In which grade, homework has nothing to do with the kids’ grades
A. Grade 3. B. Grade 5. C. Grade 9. D. Grade 11.
38. What does the underlined word “required”mean
A. Specific (精确的). B. Difficult. C. Important. D. Needed.
39. What does teenagers do after homework limits were set in 2017 in ROK
A. They participate in activities and spend more time with families.
B. They have done away with homework entirely.
C. They often study long into the night.
D. They’re easy to pass tests and get into university.
40. Which do you think is the best title for the test
A. Homework has no value at all. B. Homework must be banned.
C. Homework or not should be discussed. D. Everyone is against homework.
第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Anyone with a mobile phone has likely dropped it in water or been caught in a rainstorm. And many people seem to think that putting a wet phone in a bag of rice will rescue (save) it.
However, Apple recently warned against doing just that. The technology company said it is a bad idea because small particles (颗粒) of rice can get into the phone and cause damage.
So what should you do instead If the phone is dropped in water, dry it with a towel or clean cloth, and even a shirt will do. Turn the phone off if you can. Remove its SIM card. Remove the phone’s cover. Remove the battery, if possible. And let everything dry at room temperature, perhaps with a fan running. Since you cannot take the phone apart, Apple suggests tapping the phone against your hand with the connecting ports (端口) facing down so water can flow out.
If your phone is dropped in seawater, treated water, or a drink, Samsung suggests keeping it in clean water for a few minutes. Doing that will remove any salt or substances that could hurt the phone. Both Apple and Samsung say it’s best to leave the phone out in an open area to dry it out. More importantly, do not use a hair dryer or put the phone in a freezer.
Most newer phones are not waterproof (防水的) but they are water-resistant. Apple says its newest phones can survive 30 minutes in up to 6 meters of water. Samsung’s phones can last for the same amount of time in about 5 meters. But remember that the water resistance will decrease over time.
The phone manufacturers say it is hard to know when phones are completely dry. But it will likely take a few days. Samsung advises bringing the phone into a service center for inspection even after it’ s been air-dried.
