For Derek Veal, it all started when he explored his grandfather's old house in Georgia. He found an old
suitcase filled with photographs, some more than 100 years old.
The suitcase belonged to his great-grandmother, who had Alzheimer’ s(阿尔茨海默病) and lived in a
nursing home. Veal and his grandfather went to visit her with the photos, hoping she could tell them more
about the photos. What happened next changed Veal's life.
“Everything came back to her when she saw these pictures,” Veal said.“She recognized her sisters, her
aunts, her grandparents... It was the first time I had ever seen someone's excitement from an old photo
returning to them.”
The experience made Veal realize the power of old photographs to hold precious and long-forgotten
memories and restore a sense of identity. It never left him. Two years ago, when he came across old family
photos for sale at a thrift store(旧货店), he decided to pick one picture and try to track down the family. Soon,
he was inspired to buy more photos and started a Facebook group called Old Photo Project to aid in finding
their families.
Veal is not alone in this hobby. Photo and genealogy(家 谱 学 ) enthusiasts worldwide regularly go
through thrift stores, flea markets and the like, finding old photos with the objective of reuniting the photos
with their families. They also use the Internet and even social media to track down the families and faces in
the lost photos.
David Gutenmacher, 26, lives in Queens, New York, and started his project, Museum of Lost
Memories, in late 2020. He has already had over300,000 followers on Instagram and over 750,000 on
TikTok. “Some of my posts have gone viral and twice a person or family was tracked down in a matter of
minutes!” Gutenmacher said. The motivation behind this hobby seems to be a combination of enjoying the
detective work it takes to solve the puzzie, and the memories these lost pictures can bring back to the
families they belong to. What makes this hobby so unique is not only how it gives people the chance to help
others, but it also brings these enthusiasts a sense of purpose. “I feel like this is my calling” said
Gutenmacher. “The more I return memories, the more it feels like I'm supposed to be doing this.”
56. According to the text, what changed Veal's life

D. The photo-taking project of his grandfather's old house.

D. The financial burden of caring for Derek Veal's great-grandmother in a nursing home.
58. What do the underlined words“have gone viral” mean in paragraph 6
A. Have been updated regularly.
B. Have made people think deeply.

A study conducted by Cornell University examined how the use of AI in conversations impacts the
way people express themselves and view each other.
The researchers have found people have more efficient conversations, use more positive language and
perceive each other more positively when using an AI-enabled chat tool.
However the group also found that when participants think their partner is using more AI-suggested
responses, they consider that partner as less cooperative.
“I was surprised to find people tend to evaluate you more negatively simply because they suspect you' re
using AI to help compose text, regardless of whether you actually are,” said Jess Hohenstein, the lead
researcher. “This illustrates the continuous overall doubt that people seem to have around AI.”
For their first experiment, participants were asked to talk about a policy issue and assigned to one of
three conditions: both participants can use smart replies; only one participant can use smart replies; or neither
participant can use smart replies. Researchers found that using smart replies increased communication
efficiency, positive emotional language and positive evaluations by communication partners. On average,
smart replies accounted for 14.3% of sent messages.
But participants whose partners suspected of responding with smart replies were evaluated more
negatively than those who were thought to have typed their own responses, consistent with common
assumptions about the negative implications of Al.
“While AI might be able to help you write,” Hohenstein said, “it’ s altering your language in ways you
might not expect, especially by making you sound more positive. This suggests that by, using text-generating
AI,you' re giving up some of your-own personal voice.”
Malte Jung, an associate professor, said, “What we observe in this study is the impact that AI has on
social dynamics and some of the unintended consequences that could result from integrating AI in social
contexts. This suggests that whoever controls the algorithm(算法) may have influence on people's interactions,
language and insights into each other.”
61. Which of the following statements does Jess Hohenstein agree with
A. AI always expresses in ways you expect.
B. Algorithm will never influence people's insights.
C. Trust can be affected by using AI in conversation.
D. You will regain your voice by using AI in conversation.
62. How do the researchers draw their conclusion
A. By analyzing figures. B. By performing a survey.
C. By conducting experiments. D. By making comparisons.
63. How will a person feel about suspecting his partner's using smart replies
A. Nervous. B. Uncomfortable.
C. Excited. D. Puzzled.
64. According to the passage, what are the unexpected consequences of using text-generating AI
A. Your language remains unchanged.
B. It doesn't alter speakers' insights into each other.
C. It makes the speaker sound more negative.
D. You are losing some of your personal style.
65. What is the passage primarily about
A. Methods of using AI in conversations.
B. Efficiency of using AI in conversations.
C. Convenience of using AI in conversations.
D. Impacts of using AI in conversations.
D
Have you ever come out of a steamy hot shower and tried to look at your reflection in the mirror when
it's completely steamed and fogged up I often think that is how we tend to view our beauty— through fogged
up mirrors. We are seeing ourselves but the picture isn't exactly clear! The mirrors have been fogged up
through different life experiences and memories as we have grown up, and now blend together to form our
own definition of our beauty.
The first mirror is formed as a young child and is often based on what was said about us from our
parents and those around us. I remember being told that I was a cute child, so that when I got a little older and
was around six or seven and another child tried to tell me I was ugly - everything within me rose up against
the statement because my self-belief in what my parents had said stood strong.
The second mirror is the mirror of adolescence, those formative years when we are pushed into the big
wild world and out of the protection of home.As a teenager I went to a boarding school, and I was one of the
only two black people in the entire school. Children being naturally curious, I felt like I was asked a million
and one different questions about both my hair and skin tone--and I don't think there has ever been a time
when I have been more acutely aware of my appearance, which in turn opened up the door for me to question
how I looked and to thankfully embrace my differences.
The final mirror comes from socially constructed ideas of beauty. We are often faced with numerous
images in the media, popular culture, society, peers and social media, which can create a false ideal of beauty
in our eyes.We tend to compare ourselves to those ideals and use it as some sort of margin(差 值 ) of
measurement.
However, real beauty comes from within. It is acceptance of yourself, perceived flaws and all. You are a
masterpiece, a unique blend of genes and life experiences. It's essential to appreciate yourself like any other
work of art or natural wonder, without judgement. Maybe it's time to create a fourth mirror,a new mirror that
is wiped clean and is minus the fog of comparisons, accusations, judgments and expectations.
66. What do the fogged-up mirrors represent according to the first paragraph
A. The difficulties of seeing oneself in the mirror.
B. The various sources of beauty standards.
C. The unclear perceptions of one's beauty.
D. The life experiences and memories.
67. How did the author react when someone called her ugly
A. She felt embarrassed.
B. She completely denied it.
C. She sought comfort from her parents.
D. She questioned what her parents had said.
68. What can we learn about social constructed ideas of beauty
A. They push teens out of home protection.
B. They arouse acute awareness of one's appearance.
C. They may mislead people's idea of beauty.
D. They are the exact measurement of beauty.
69. What does the author suggest as a possible fourth mirror
A. A mirror not affected by external factors.
B. A mirror going against society's expectations.
C. A mirror reflecting one's childhood experiences.
D. A mirror showing the beauty ideals from social media.
70. The passage is mainly written to tell us that we should .
A. bring happiness to those around us
B. keep our resolve despite obstacles
C. change ourselves to achieve an ideal
D. embrace our real inner beauty

Before entering college,I had heard so many stories about how stressful freshman year could get and
that this would potentially be the most difficult experience I would ever have to go through. And yes, for the
most part, those stories did live up to the reality.
In the first several months,I was urged to improve my social skills and to befriend people. Personally,
there was a clear struggle on wanting to adjust and not simply adapt. Adapting required a change in behavior
for the sake of fitting in and I didn't want that. Luckily and eventually,I was able to find my own group. It
just required extra work and patience.
Naturally, there were academic obstacles that arose. The biggest one was my major. I was enrolled as
a communication studies major. I chose it because it seemed like a safe haven. But I later
discovered that it didn't actually fit my likes. After two quarters, serious thinking and several
mini breakdowns, I switched to philosophy.
Ever since I was younger, I have known I wanted to work in the field. It has always
intrigued me. To be honest, I’ve never had to read such challenging texts in my life, but I
enjoy it. It pushes me beyond my limits in a good way. It introduces me to concepts and
theories that I' ve never heard of.More importantly, it doesn't only make me more logical. It
also makes me more empathic(有移情作用的) and understanding of others.
I eventually overcame the obstacles. As I recall it now, I'm thankful that the good always
outweighed the bad. The good came in the form of new friends, significant learning and
deepened self-understanding. As I head off to sophomore year, I plan to bring this good with
me.
