People around the globe have suffered the anxiety of waiting months to find out if their homes have been damaged by wildfires. Now, once the smoke has cleared for aerial photography, researchers have found a way to identify building damage within minutes. Through a system called DamageMap, a team at Stanford University has brought an AI approach to building assessment: Instead of comparing before-and-after photos, they’ve trained a program using machine learning to rely only on post-fire images.
The current method of assessing damage involves people going door-to-door to check every building. While DamageMap is not intended to replace in-person damage assessment, it could be used as a supplementary tool by offering immediate results and providing the exact locations of the affected buildings. The researchers tested it using a variety of satellite and aerial photography with at least 92 percent accuracy.
Most computational systems now cannot efficiently classify building damage because the AI compares post-disaster photos with pre-disaster images that must use the same satellite, camera angle and lighting conditions, which can be expensive to obtain or unavailable. Therefore, DamageMap first uses pre-fire photos to map the area and confirm building locations. Then, the program analyzes post-wildfire images to identify damage through features like blackened surfaces, collapsed roofs or the absence of structures.
Structural damage from wildfires in California is typically divided into four categories: almost no damage, minor damage, major damage or destroyed. Because DamageMap is based on aerial images, the researchers quickly realized the system could not make such detailed assessments and trained the machine to simply determine if there was a fire damage or not.
Because the team used a deep learning technique, their model can continue to be improved by feeding it more data. The researchers said the tool can be applied to any area suffering from wildfires and hope it could also be trained to classify damages from other disasters, such as floods or hurricanes. “So far our results suggest that this can be generalized, and we can keep improving it,” said lead study author Marios Galanis, a graduate student at Stanford’s School of Engineering.
19.What is the advantage of using DamageMap
A.It helps improve the evaluation efficiency. B.It operates automatically after self-learning.
C.It analyzes large numbers of disaster photos. D.It takes the place of the traditional measures.
20.How does DamageMap work
A.It identifies damage with pre-fire photos.
B.It confirms locations with post-fire photos.
C.It assesses damage through the features of buildings.
D.It maps the fire-affected area through comparing photos.
21.What would the future study focus on according to Marios Galanis
A.Accuracy improvement. B.A wider range of application.
C.Techniques development. D.A higher speed of machine learning.
22.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The impact of wildfires on local residents. B.Main challenges to classify structural damage.
C.Possible solutions to identify natural disasters. D.An AI system for rapid fire damage evaluation.

Dust is a common fact of life, and it's more than just a daily trouble — it can get into machinery and equipment, causing loss of efficiency or damage. Space dust is especially troublesome because of how high- risk everything becomes in that environment, and the conditions make cleaning off dust challenging. Dust has caused serious damage to the lunar exploration missions and led to the failure of Mars rovers (火星车).
To solve the problem, researchers at The University of Texas partnered with a company to develop a new method to keep dust from sticking to surfaces, which firstly focused on space technology. “What we’ve demonstrated here is a surface that can clean itself,” said Chih- Hao Chang, a lead author of the study. In tests, the researchers piled lunar dust on top of their engineered surfaces and then turned each surface on its side. The result: Only about 2% of the surface remained dusty, compared with more than 35% of a similarly smooth surface. “Particulates (微粒) aren’t able to stick to the surface, so they come off using just the force of gravity,” Chih- Hao Chang added.
The researchers said the discovery boils down to things the human eye can’t detect. In the experiments, the team changed the shape of flat surfaces to create tightly packed pyramid- shaped (金字塔形的) structures. These sharp structures make it difficult for the dust particles to stick to the material, instead sticking to one another and rolling off the material via gravity.
These structures provide a solution which doesn’t require any extra energy or materials to remove dust. This technology may also have a great impact on Earth in the future, making many types of materials dust- resistant, from spacecraft to household windows. Further research is expected to improve the current findings so that they can be extended as soon as possible to benefit both space exploration and people’s daily lives.
23.What can we know about space dust from paragraph 1
A.It may pose high risks to astronauts’ health. B.Cleaning off the space dust is really difficult.
C.It can quickly grow in the space environment. D.Studying the space dust is a goal of space exploration.
24.Which can best describe the new method according to paragraph 2
①Effective. ②Experiment- based. ③Dangerous. ④Discussion- based.
A.①② B.①④ C.②③ D.③④

A.The goal of the new method. B.The limitation of the new method.
C.The process of the new method. D.The principle of the new method.
26.What can be inferred about the technology from the last paragraph
A.It will save energy in a great extent. B.It will be promoted in our daily lives.
C.It will be used in space exploration at first. D.It will help the lunar exploration missions succeed.

A recent report from a United Nations group warns that using technology in classes may not help as much as many people believe. It says that technology can be helpful, but it shouldn’t be the focus. Instead, technology should be used to support learning. “Too much attention on technology in education usually comes at a high cost, ” the report says.
Technology changes so fast that it’s hard to study how it really influences students. The new report says that many of the studies showing that technology helps students come from rich countries and that some of the studies supporting technology come from companies that sell technology to schools.
As classes moved online, the use of technology in education grew even more quickly. Many students were forced to study at home, using video calls to communicate with their teachers. But the report points out that around 500 million students were unable to take part in online classes. That’s a larger problem. People and countries with less money are often left out.
It is true that technology can help in many ways, like allowing students to learn in more interesting ways, helping teachers explain difficult ideas and helping students with special needs. But it can also be very distracting (分散注意力的). When students use phones in class, it can disturb (扰乱) their learning. One study that was carried out in 14 countries showed that even just having a smartphone nearby can be distracting. Even so, only less than 25% of the world’s countries don’t allow students to use phones in schools.
The report suggests that the best way to learn is still to work closely with teachers.Working with other classmates also helps students learn. Most schools should spend more money on things like books, classrooms, and teachers.
27.What is the goal of the new UN report
A.To stress the importance of digital technology. B.To improve how technology is used in education.
C.To encourage more schools to use technology in class.
D.To pay more attention to the development of technology.
28.What is a relatively bigger problem for online class
A.Students cannot fully focus their attention. B.The Internet speed is much slower in many homes.
C.Schools have to spend extra money on the Internet. D.The advantages of technology fail to be shared fairly.
29.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text
A.A recent UN report says that technology should not be used in classrooms.
B.One study showed that over a quarter of the world’s countries mustn’t use phones in schools.
C.The UN report says that the best way to learn is working with teachers instead of working with classmates.
D.Technology can have influence both in good and bad ways.
30.What is the best title of the text
A.A UN Group Calls for Limit on Technology in Schools B.Countries Work Together to Improve Education
C.Technology Plays an Important Role in Our Life D.Smartphones Help Students a Lot in Online Learning

In modern life, the Internet has become an important part of our daily routine. It offers us a wealth of information at our fingertips. We can quickly search for knowledge, news, and educational resources. Moreover, it enables seamless communication with people worldwide through emails and social media.
However, the Internet also has drawbacks. There is a lot of false information online, which may mislead us. Additionally, excessive use of the Internet can lead to addiction, affecting our study, work, and even physical and mental health.
In my view, we should make good use of the Internet while being cautious. We need to learn to distinguish between right and wrong information and control our online time.
