The bamboo train is also called “norry” in the Cambodian language. Different from a traditional train, the bamboo train is a bamboo board placed on two sets of wheels. It has a small engine (引擎), usually from a motorcycle.
The bamboo train came around the 1980s, after the Civil War (内战) in Cambodia. This war destroyed many roads and railways in the country. At first, the bamboo train was invented for sending things and people on the railway. Today, it has become a symbol of countryside life in Cambodia and a full experience for visitors.
A bamboo train can carry up to four passengers, not including the driver. It can run up to 40 km/h on the railway. Riding the bamboo train is an unforgettable experience. The journey takes about 30 minutes. During the ride, you can enjoy green fields, small villages and so on in the open air. It costs about 5 dollars each person for one-way trip, and 10 dollars for a round trip.
The bamboo train is available all year round, but the best time to ride it is during the dry season from November to early May. The weather during these months is warm and nice, making it perfect for a ride. Since videos of her cutting hair were widely shared online, many people have watched her livestreams (直播) to learn her techniques or just to talk. Some fans even come to visit her shop in Huaihua, Hunan Province, to get a haircut.
Xiaohua, whose real name is Li Jing, first started sharing videos online in February. At first, they didn’t attract much attention. But recently, one of her videos suddenly got a lot of views, as people praised her for responding to customers’ needs. Many have invited her to open shops in their hometowns or give lectures (讲课) to hairdressers across the country.
She says her popularity comes from treating her customers as friends. “For each customer, my aim is to cut the hair to the best of my ability and not add anything they do not want or like. That’s probably the reason that many of my customers come back for me,” she says.
Faced with great popularity, Xiaohua says she does not consider herself a professional hairdresser. She believes there are many more hairdressers who have better skills (技能).
She learned to cut hair from her husband who is also a hairdresser. “As long as a person cuts enough hair and makes enough mistakes, they can master the techniques,” she says.

Half a century later, Zhang Yuyu returned to the place where he first started his work — Zhirong Primary School in Qidong, Jiangsu. However, this time, the 89-year-old is no longer a math teacher. The school has been turned into a nursing home for the old, including him.
As a result of China’s actions to improve education, many small schools in villages were closed and the children were brought together into larger schools. Zhirong Primary School is just one of the schools that closed down for the same reason in 1996.
Zhou Biao graduated from the school many years ago. In 2009, Zhou’s grandmother was in her 90s. To take care of her, Zhou returned to the village and decided to turn the school into a nursing home. At first, the school was quite shabby (破旧的). Zhou made improvements to the school. Now it has a main building and some houses for workers. His grandmother lived in the nursing home until she died at the age of 104.
In fact, many village nursing homes in Jiangsu like this used to be primary schools. In other parts of China, people are also using the deserted school buildings again in this way. Zhao Yuyu said that making use of such schools could cut the cost of building new nursing homes a lot.
With 120 million people in villages aged 60 or over, China has been finding ways to care for the old in villages. The school-turned nursing homes are just a useful way.
