My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. I was born missing my left hand. Indeed, my limb (手臂) difference could have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed, “You will take her home. You will love her and treat her as normal.”
That is exactly what happened. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun of for it.
However, that fact that I was different hit me hard my first day of high school. I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious and the need to fit in is intensified. I remember one of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket. I told myself that I’d just hide it that one day, while I was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week, a month, and years — 25 of them to be exact.
When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and lonely, I met someone special and invited him in. The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, touch it, love it — love me. I saw my limb difference as something unique about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
It was a transformational experience, and I learned to love me too. It changed how I lived my entire life and made me happier. I also discovered and joined the Lucky Fin Project, an organisation devoted to people with all types of disabilities.
Hiding things, especially from loved ones, is tiring and lonely, and it prevents us from getting help and support. It’s time to change that.
24. What was the author’s childhood like
A. She had no social interactions with friends.
B. She was raised with care and treated normally.
C. She faced some challenges in school activities.

25. What happened to the author when she was 13 years old
A. She began to ignore her disability.
B. She suffered prejudice from some kids.
C. She started hiding herself away from friends.
D. She became sensitive due to her self-awareness.
26. How did the author change when she stopped hiding
A. She started to open up and be herself.
B. She met someone who cured her disability.
C. She was fed up with the company of others.
D. She reduced involvement in the disability group.
27. What can we learn from this passage
A. Misfortune is a good teacher.
B. Disability is not a barrier to success.
C. Self-acceptance can lead to self-love.
D. Nothing beats the feeling of being loved.

Women were less likely than men to support the Vietnam war, the Gulf war, or the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. They commit far fewer murders. They are less likely to favor strikes. For some scholars, these are grounds for thinking that a world run by women would be more peaceful.
But European history suggests otherwise, according to political scientists Oeindrila Dube and S. P. Harish. They studied how often European rulers went to war between 1480 and 1913, and found that states ruled by queens were 27% more likely to get involved in wars than those ruled by kings.
This was not all the queens’ fault: men, seeing them as soft targets, tended to attack them. Frederick the Great of Prussia once declared: ”No woman should ever be allowed to govern anything.“ Shortly after becoming king, he attacked the newly crowned Archduchess of Austria, Maria Theresa, and seized Silesia province. Despite years of war, she never recovered it.
But perceived weakness is not the whole story. Queens, the researchers found, were more likely to gain new territory. Catherine the Great expanded her empire by some 200,000 square miles. And married queens were more aggressive than single queens or kings, whether single or married.
The authors suggest several reasons for this. First, married queens may have been able to form more military alliances(联盟),making them confident enough to pick fights. Their husbands had often served in the army before they married, and were well placed to strengthen military ties between their homelands and their wives’ states.
Second, unlike most kings, queens often gave their husbands a lot of power, putting them in charge of foreign policy or the economy. During the 1740s, Maria Theresa’s husband, Francis I, reformed the Austrian economy and raised money for the armed forces while his wife ruled much of central Europe. Prince Albert was Queen Victoria’s most trusted adviser, shaping her foreign policy until his death in1861. This division of labor, the authors suggest, freed up time for queens to pursue more aggressive policies.
The modern era, too, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur war, or Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands. The number of countries led by women has more than doubled since 2000, but there is plenty of room for improvement: the current level of 15 represents less than 10 % of the total. A world in which more women took power might be more equal. Whether it would be more peaceful is a different question.
28. The underlined “perceived weakness” in paragraph 4 means that________.
A. women were less likely to support wars
B. women could not recover lost territory
C. women commit far fewer crimes
D. women were soft targets
29. Why were married queens more likely to gain new territory
A. Because their military alliances picked fights for them.
B. Because they were ambitious and aggressive by nature.
C. Because their husbands were supportive in state governing.
D. Because they centralized all power into their own hands.
30. What is the purpose of mentioning the two female leaders in the last paragraph
A. To imply there is room for improvement in gender equality.
B. To indicate more females become leaders in modern times.
C. To illustrate female leaders cannot prevent wars in modern times.
D. To suggest female leaders have their share of wars in modern times.
31. According to the passage, we can safely conclude that________.
A. married women are not fit to govern their states on their own
B. female leaders should be responsible for all wars throughout history
C. the world wouldn’t be more peaceful even if more women took power
D. the division of labor allows queens to survive economic crisis
D
Though the spread of good reproduction of works of art can be culturally valuable, museums continue to promote the special status of original works and highlight the authenticity of its exhibits. Unfortunately, this seems to place severe limitations on the kind of experience offered to visitors.
One limitation is related to the way the museum presents its exhibits. Art museums are often called “treasure houses”. We are reminded of this even before we view a collection by the presence of security guards who keep us away from the exhibits. In addition, a major collection like that of London’s National Gallery is housed in numerous rooms, where a single piece of work is likely to be worth more than all the average visitor possesses. In a society that judges the personal status of the individual so much by their material worth, it is therefore difficult not to be impressed by one’s own relative “worthlessness” in such an environment.
Furthermore, consideration of the “value” of the original work in its treasure house setting impresses upon the viewer that since these works were originally produced, they have been assigned a huge value in terms of money by some person or institution more powerful than themselves. Evidently, nothing the viewer thinks about the work is going to alter that value, and so today’s viewer is discouraged from trying to extend that spontaneous, immediate, self-reliant kind of interpretation which would originally have met the work.
The visitor may then be struck by the strangeness of seeing such a variety of paintings, drawings and sculptures brought together in an environment for which they were not originally created. This “displacement effect” is further heightened by the huge volume of exhibits. In the case of a major collection, there are probably more works on display than we could realistically view in weeks or even months.
This is particularly distressing because time seems to be a vital factor in the appreciation of all art forms. A fundamental difference between paintings and other art forms is that there is no prescribed time over which a painting is viewed. Operas, novels and poems are read in a prescribed time sequence, whereas a picture has no clear place at which to start viewing, or at which to finish. Thus, art works themselves encourage us to view them superficially without appreciating the richness of detail and labor that is involved.
Consequently, the dominant critical approach becomes that of the art historian, a specialized academic approach devoted to “discovering the meaning” of art within the cultural context of its time. This is in harmony with the museum’s function, since the approach is dedicated to seeking out and conserving “authentic” “original” readings of the exhibits.
32. The writer mentions London’s National Gallery to illustrate ______.
A. the undesirable cost to a nation of maintaining a huge collection of art
B. the negative effect a museum can have on visitors’ opinion of themselves
C. the conflict that may arise in society between financial and artistic values
D. the need to put individual well-being above large - scale artistic schemes
33. The writer says that today viewers may be unwilling to criticize a work because they ______.
A. lack the knowledge needed B. feel their personal reaction is of no significance
C. have no real concept of the work’s value D. fear it may have financial implications
34. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. Original work: reduction to value of art works
B. Original work: art historians’ bread and butter
C. Original work: substitute for reproduction
D. Original work: killer of artistic appreciation

Benefits of Sports
Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from studies and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven beneficial to overall well-being.
The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you’re involved. ___35___ Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions.
___36___ Playing sports also contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, a high five from a teammate, or a handshake after a match really boosts a child’s confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise self-worth. ___37___ So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game ” rather than “Did you win ”
Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership. ___38___ Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds responsibility and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader.
Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics. ___39___
There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go Pick one and get moving!
A. It’s not just your body that benefits from sports.
B. Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.
C. But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss.
D. If you play group sports you’ll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.
E. Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills.
F. Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage.
G. Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field.
第三部分:书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
In a growing number of school districts across America, students must wear a uniform. According to the US Department of Education, wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally. Schools claim that when students come in uniform, it improves discipline and leads to academic gains. However, students protested the decision.
A more important question is whether there is any evidence to show that mandatory (强制的) uniform policies can lead to improved student outcomes. A 2003 study that used a large national data set concluded that elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behavior problems. But it found that high schools had a greater frequency of misbehavior.
Interestingly, even when evidence is available, educators could take the opposite view. For example, a study of educators in 38 North Carolina high schools found that 61% of the school masters believed that there was a reduction in cases of misbehavior on campus when school uniforms were introduced. In reality, the data showed no change in incidents of suspensions (停学) and other problems.
Similarly, research on the effectiveness of school uniforms on increasing student attendance and achievement is confusing. For example, one study concluded that school uniforms resulted in increased student achievement and increased attendance. However, another study found little impact on academics at all levels and little evidence of improvement in attendance for girls and drop in attendance for boys. So, what does lack of consistent research mean for policy
In my view, it does not mean that schools should not carry out such policies. It does mean, however, that educators must be clear about the goals that they hope to achieve. Decreased discipline problems, increased attendance and academic achievement may not be achieved just by wearing uniforms. But there may be other benefits, for instance, it could help a school promote its brand through a uniform look. School uniforms may also serve as a symbol of commitment to academic achievement.
40. Why are students required to wear school uniforms in America
41 What are the findings of the 2003 study
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy.
43. What do you think of wearing school uniforms Explain your reasons. (In about 40 words)
