Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world.
Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photograpber
My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on.
Question 2: ________

Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos.
Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me

School volunteers don’t get paid in money, but sometimes we receive special gifts. One morning, just before Christmas vacation, I was selling tickets to our school’s last evening performance of The Nutcracker. The evening before had been a sell-out. People had lined the walls of the auditorium. Some had even peeked (偷看) in from outside to watch the show.
One of my customers that day was a parent. “I think it’s _______ that I have to pay to see my own child perform,” she announced, yanking (猛拉) a wallet from her purse.
“The school asks for a voluntary donation to help pay for scenery and costumes,” I explained, “but not everyone has to pay. You’re welcome to all the tickets you need.”
“Oh, I’ll pay,” she grumbled. “Two adults and a child.” She dropped down a ten-dollar bill. I gave her the change and her tickets. She stepped aside, fumbling with her purse. That’s when the boy waiting behind her emptied a pocketful of change onto the table.
“How many tickets ” I asked.
“I don’t need tickets,” he said. “I’m paying.” He pushed the coins across the table.
“But you’ll need tickets to see the show tonight.”
He shook his head. “I’ve already seen the show.”
All the school children saw The Nutcracker with their classes. The donation was for evening performances only. I pushed the pile of nickels, dimes and quarters back.
“You don’t have to pay to see the show with your class,” I told him. “That’s free.”
“No,” the boy insisted. “I saw it last night. My brother and I arrived late. We couldn’t find anyone to buy tickets from, so we just walked in.”
Lots of people in that crowd had probably “just walked in.” The few volunteers present couldn’t check everyone for a ticket. Who would argue, anyway As I’d told the parent ahead of this boy, the donation was voluntary.
He pushed his money back to me. “I’m paying now, for last night,” he said.
“If the ticket table was closed when you got there, you couldn’t pay,” I reasoned.
“That’s what my brother said.”
“Nobody knows the difference,” I assured him. “Don’t worry about it.”
Thinking the matter was settled, I started to push the coins back. He put his hand on mine.
“I know the difference.”
For one silent moment our hands bridged the money. Then I spoke, “Two tickets cost two dollars.” The pile of coins added up to the correct amount. “Thank you,” I said.
The boy smiled, turned away and was gone.
“Excuse me.”
I looked up, surprised to see the woman who had bought her own tickets moments earlier. She was still there, purse open, change and tickets in hand.
“Why don’t you keep this change,” she said quietly. “The scenery is beautiful, and those costumes couldn’t have been cheap.” She handed me a few dollar bills, closed her purse and left.
Little did that boy know that he had given us both our first gift of the Christmas season.

A World of Words
Today, we find ourselves in a digital (数字的) world of words, with much of our reading and writing taking place on a screen. And the more we rely on technology, the less we use traditional writing equipment. Sometimes, when we pick up a pen, we perhaps pause, trying to remember how to write a word. Then, it might strike us just how much we value the charm of handwriting. China has a rich history of handwriting art, especially Chinese calligraphy.
The Four Treasures of the Study
For many Chinese, it won’t come as a surprise to learn that these four writing devices, the brush, xuan paper, ink stick and ink stone, are included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage items (国家级非物质文化遗产) of China.
Brushes are traditionally made from animal hair. The tips of the writing brush is of great importance, as soft or stiff bristles produce a variety of effects. With a history of over one thousand years, xuan paper plays a key role in Chinese calligraphy and painting. To use the ink, the stick is rubbed with water on an ink stone. This traditional method of producing liquid ink gives the calligrapher more control over the thickness of the ink and its texture.
Timeline of Calligraphy Masterpieces
The earliest known examples are called jiaguwen that date back to the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE). These picture-like characters (文字) gradually evovled, and during the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE), a more standardised calligraphy, xiaozhuan began to emerge. During the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE), lishu began to be widely used. This started a new age and led to more fluent and supple scripts, such as kaishu, caoshu and xingshu.
There is an old saying that learning kaishu is like a baby learning to stand, with xingshu likened to walking, and caoshu to running. This means that one should first master the basics before progressing to the next level. Or like the English saying, “Learn to walk before you run.”
One of the Greatest Masters of Chinese Calligraphy
Stories about the masters of calligraphy have been passed down from generation to generation. Known as the “Sage of Calligraphy”, Wang Xizhi (303-361 CE) could be said to best represent the heart and soul of Chinese calligraphy.
Wang Xizhi lived during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 CE) and started calligraphy at an early age. It is said that he practised calligraphy so much that the water in the pond near his house turned black with him washing his brushes in it day after day.
34.The writer mentioned the digital world of words in the first part to ________.
A.discuss a problem B.solve a mystery C.introduce a subject D.tell a story
35.Which word has the closest meaning to “rely on”
A.depend on B.act against C.look down on D.fail in

37.What can we infer from the passage
A.Calligraphy beginners should learn xingshu first.

Core Abilities
Good morning, everyone!
My name is Li Hua. It’s my great pleasure to talk about “core abilities” today. I think sports and life-long learning are the core abilities that we should have.
First of all, health is more important than wealth. So we should pay more attention to our health. It’s necessary for us to spend more time doing sports to keep healthy. We students need to make a plan of exercising and do sports for at least twenty minutes every day.
Next, with the rapid development of science and technology, we must have the ability of life-long learning to meet the needs of our work and life. I think the best way of keeping life-long learning is to learn by ourselves. We can learn from books, Internet or even radios. Only by doing this can we take on new challenges any time. That’s all for my speech. Thank you for your listening!
