You may have a sense of direction, or you may not. Some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can get lost easily even with a map. Why
Scientists say people are all born with a sense of direction, but they are not sure how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at the University of Liverpool supports this idea. It suggests that if people don’t develop their sense of direction, they will lose it.
“Children have the ability to find their way after they are seven years old,” says Jim Martland, the research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed to go out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they will never develop the skills to improve their sense of direction.”
Jim Martand also emphasizes(强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He gives the following suggestions.
★ If you are using a map, try to find the place where you are and the place where you are going. Try to find the way between them.
★ If you leave your bike in a strange place, put in near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route(路线) as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
★ Use lines such as streets in a town, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone. Note any landmark such as a tower block or a hill which can help you to find out where you are.
31. Scientists believe that only some people are born with the sense of direction.
32. The sense of direction is a lifelong ability.
33. Kids can’t develop a good sense of direction if they’re always driven around in a car.
34. Counting our steps can help us know how far we have gone.
35. Bikes can be used as landmarks when you get to a new city.

As time moves forward, everything around us changes. It is technology that makes our life much better! Here are some examples.
●The way people keep in touch
Then: Snail mail (邮寄信件) was a main way. I remember having pen pals in primary school and being very excited about writing letters and buying stamps. Although there’s something good about the idea of snail mail, it often took a longer time and brought trouble for both the letter givers and the receivers, and even the postmen.
Now: Today, people can receive our message on social media the minute we send it. Video chat is often made as well. Technology has successfully shortened the time from several days to minutes. But because it has become so easy, we often neglect (忽视) a face-to-face conversation with others.
●The way people travel
Then: People once thought that the roads were so dangerous. When cars were a new invention, a man walked in front of them with a red flag, reminding other people to be careful. Now, of course,we are used to them.
Now: My grandparents still can’t get over the fact that with a click of a button, you can have a car pick you up right to your doorstep. Besides, with the help of technology, travel can become a lot more eco-friendly. Gone are the days when you had to print out your airline or train tickets. Instead, we now have e-tickets.
●The way people relax and have fun
Then: Over half a century ago, we were first introduced to the large and heavy box called a television set. Your grandparents can tell you that when they first started watching TV, pictures were black and white. Fewer TV shows were provided for us in the early years, and most of them were about family or news.
Now: Programs about almost everything can be easily found. We can read news on the Internet, read books on e-readers and watch movies online, too.
Technology has made our life easier, faster and more interesting. It seems that our dependence on technology isn’t such a bad thing.
Comparison about life in the ___76___ and now
Then Now
___77___ ●People were happy about having pen pals and being very excited. ●The way of snail mail was slow and ___78___ ●The message can be received quickly after being sent. ●People are short of a face-to-face conversation.
Transportation ●A helper held a red flag and ___79___ others not to go near cars. ●Travel becomes much easier and faster with the help of technology.
Entertainment ●The TV was large and heavy. ●Pictures were black and white on TV. ●Only ___80___ of shows were available on TV. ●More programs are on show on TV. ●More ways are provided to relax and have fun.
Conclusion: Modern technology really makes a lot of difference to our life.

Dear chairman,
I’m writing this email to apply the position—the minister of learning.
My name is Tom. I like reading all kinds of books from which I get much knowledge. My favourite subject is maths because I’m interested in those numbers. As a student of Junior Grade 3, I’m more confident and helpful than before. I’ve made great progress in my study, and I have more time and energy to help other students. If I get the position, I will divide my classmates into different study groups. They can help and encourage each other in this way. Besides, I will share my ways of study to help those who have difficulty in learning the subjects well. At last, I have some questions about the interview. What should I do to perform well in the interview and what kind of clothes should I wear
I’m looking forward to your reply and I hope you can give me a chance. Thank you.
Yours,
Tom
