Death is a natural part of life. Countries around the world hold festivals to remember the dead, such as Zhongyuan Festival in China and Halloween in the US. These festivals show that people from China and the West hold different views on death.
Zhongyuan Festival falls on the 15th day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It honors the dead through various activities. Since ancient times, the Chinese have believed that the gates of the underworld open on that day, allowing ghosts to walk on Earth. An important custom of the festival is to light water lanterns and put them onto rivers to help the dead find their way home. This kind of activity shows a deep-seated fear and respect for the dead.
Different from Zhongyuan Festival, Halloween is a fun festival celebrated every year on Oct 31 in Western countries. At night, people dress up in scary costumes to scare ghosts away. They also do fun activities such as trick-or-treat and pumpkin carving (南瓜雕刻). This shows that Halloween is not about the fear of death, but a willingness (意愿) to face it.
Though people in different countries have different ideas about death, they all understand the importance of remembering the dead. This reminds them to value (珍惜) their time and live their best lives.
31. Festivals to remember the dead are celebrated worldwide.
32. Zhongyuan Festival is on 15th of July every year.
33. According to Chinese custom, the way home for the dead is lit by water lanterns.
34. Halloween is a fun festival because people wear funny clothes on that day.

Postures at exams
sitting up straight position slumped-over position
What subject do you worry about the most at school Many students worry about math Some students can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam itself. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful.
“For students who are worried about math, posture makes a big difference,” Erik Peper, a researcher from a university told Daily Mail. That’s right-sitting up straight can help you do better in math exams.
Researchers tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a math exam while sitting in a stumped-over position, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56% of the students said the exam was easier to do if they were sitting up straight.
Stumping over is a defensive (防备的) posture. It can bring out negative memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly, Peper said.
Students who were not nervous about taking the math exam didn’t necessarily benefit from better posture. But they did find that doing math in a stumped-over position was more difficult, Science Daily reported.
Good posture isn’t just helpful for taking math exams. Musicians, sports players and public speakers can all benefit from it. When you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more positive (积极的) and focus better.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), the ancient people had loved sweets and developed ways of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the kings and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, let and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be glad to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. So, the art should be remembered, missed and passed on.
41. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Expensive. B. Cheap. C. Useful.
42. When did sugar painting appear
A. In the Yuan Dynasty. B. In the Tang Dynasty. C. In the Ming Dynasty.
43. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly
A. To show their excellent skills. B. To avoid syrup becoming hard. C. To reduce people’s waiting time.
44. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4
A. Uncaring. B. Worried. C. Unclear.
45. Which can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Exploring (探索) the Art of Sugar Painting
B Improving the Taste of Sugar Painting
C. Effects of the Sugar Producing Technology

Photography, a word from two Greek words—“photos” meaning light, and “graphe” meaning to write or draw, is a way of making pictures. A camera serves as a tool for taking photos by focusing reflected light from objects or scenes onto film or a digital chip which can be processed into a photo.
The idea of taking photos has been around for centuries. However, it wasn’t until 1826 that the first photo was made by an inventor who covered a metal plate with light-sensitive (感光的) chemicals and allowed light onto it through a camera lens. As time went by, photographers used different materials or ways to record an imago (图像).
The first photographers were inventors, scientists and artists. Using early cameras wasn’t easy for them, because it took long to take photos, and the plates had to be processed right away so that the image wouldn’t be lost.
By the 1808, photographers started to use film instead. The film not only let them take many photos on one roll but also made cameras take up less space and become lighter and even cheaper than the early ones. As a result, many people bought the film cameras and took up photography as a hobby.
In the 1900s, more people started taking photos, but few processed their own film because it was expensive to buy the equipment and chemicals or set up a darkroom. However, although there were several processing steps and it took a long time to get pictures, some people did process their own film and today there are still photographers who enjoy taking photos on film and process it themselves.
At the end of the 20th century, digital cameras were first used. Unlike film cameras, a digital camera records the image electronically as digital information instead of recording chemically on film. People prefer using digital cameras to the film ones because they are smaller and easier to use, letting people see pictures at once which can be deleted or changed later with a computer program.
Today, almost all smartphones have cameras built into them. What will the future photography be like Perhaps time can tell.
