Remember back when virtual reality came out as the Next Big Thing Videogame maker Sega developed a mass-marker head-tracking VR system and showed it to reporters and industry representatives at the 1993 winter Consumer Electronics Show. It performed as advertised, carried an affordable $200 price tag and was set to launch the following year. Unfortunately, among other issues, testers reportedly developed headaches and motion sickness using the headset and the system was quietly shelved.
A report just issued by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, suggests a similar problem could be found in self-driving cars. According to the study’s authors Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle, that’s because the three main factors that trigger motion sickness—specifically, a conflict between balance and visual inputs, an inability to anticipate the direction of motion and a lack of control over the direction of motion—tend to be increased in self-driving vehicles.
The report suggests between six and ten percent of Americans riding in self-driving vehicles would be expected to always, or at least usually, suffer some degree of motion sickness. What’s more, the frequency and severity suffered can be expected to vary depending on what the person is doing at the time instead of driving. Those reading, watching movies or television, texting and working while on autopilot should suffer the most motion sickness, while those who steadfastly keep their eyes on the rode are likely to endure the least measure of discomfort.
Authors Sivan and Schoettle suggest automakers design self-driving cars specially to help reduce it, including having large transparent windows to maximize visual field, and setting seats and displays so that riders are facing forward. Alternatively, riders could always take anti-nausea(防呕吐) medications, though this is not a particularly practical solution for various reasons. Beyond that, riders could take a nap, or at least keep their eyes closed while the vehicle is in motion, which is said to help minimize motion sickness.
24. What’s is the function of Paragraph 1
A. To present the uncertain future of VR.
B. To introduce the topic of motion sickness.
C. To highlight the importance of VR and its system.
D. To attract public attention towards hi-tech products.
25. According to the passage, which behavior can bring about the most motion sickness
A. Driving and humming songs in rough condition.
B. Viewing the scenery and talking with other riders.
C. Keeping absorbed in writing a paper along the way.
D. Taking photos of the buildings outside the car windows.
26. What can we learn from the passage
A. The head-tracking VR system was successfully launched the next year.
B. Whatever the riders do, they would be less likely to feel uncomfortable.
C. A clear window with forward-facing seats would relieve motion sickness.
D. The visual influences on balance would lead to motion sickness in all vehicles.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠)
Above all, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how the other is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
Besides, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(过错)in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with.
A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other a good friend has a good sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!

Scot Case, Vice President of the environmental marketing firm Terra Choice, was not happy. Case last year sent his researchers into a big-box retail store to evaluate the green advertising claims of some of the products on its shelves. The results were shocking, of the 1,018 products Terra Choice surveyed, all but one failed to live up fully to their green boasts.
He couldn’t believe the result, and had his team redo the survey, but the results came back the same. “It just shows we’re awash in greenwash.” He said.
Many consumers may not have heard the term green washing, but they’ve surely experienced it — misleading marketing about the environmental benefits of a product. Greenwashing isn’t new — ever since the environment was an issue in the early 1970s. As going green has become big business, environmental advocates worry that truly green companies could get lost in the situation.
“We have such a challenge ahead of us on climate change,” says Kevin Tuerff, a co-founder of the marketing consultancy EnviroMedia. “Greenwashing harms the effort we need to be making.”
The first step to cleaning up greenwashing is to identify it, and Tuerff and his partners have hit on an innovative way to spotlight particularly abnormal examples. They’ve launched the Greenwashing Index a website that allows consumers to post ads that might be examples of greenwashing and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5 — 1 is a little green lie; 5 is a big green lie.
It’s a simple device, but it shows the power of the Internet to uncover misleading ads with a simple Web search, any consumer can find out the index they want to know. Googling isn’t the only way to take out the greenwashing, however. The Terra Choice website offers a list of what it calls the “six sins of greenwashing” — six simple signs that should remind consumers of a company that is more interested in selling the earth than saving it.
“We have better green products but a lot of exaggerated (夸张的) claims,” says Case. “That could be enough to destroy the whole green movement” — and that’s not a little green lie.
32. Which of the following statements is TRUE about greenwashing
A. It is harmful for the environment.
B. It is a special way to wash so as to save water.
C. It is environment-friendly so it should be advocated.
D. It is beneficial for both the consumers and the companies.
33. Which measure should be used to tackle the green washing
A. Holding hearings to tell genuine environmental claims from false ones.
B. Launching the Greenwashing Index a website to expose greenwashing.
C. Offering a list of “six sins of greenwashing” for companies’ reference.
D. Updating Green Guide for consumers which hasn’t changed since 1998.
34. Which of the following shows NO sign of greenwashing
A. Organic products but without any certificates.
B. Energy-efficient products made of harmful material.
C. Food which is low in nutrition but high in calorie.
D. Pesticides which are said to be environment-friendly.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The effort on environmental protection.
B. The advocation of green advertisements.
C. The distinction between green products and common ones.
D. The distinction between real environmental claims and false ones.
第二节 (共5题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I have sometimes given money to beggars. 36 Please let me explain why.
First, for every dollar that we give to a beggar, the more profitable we make begging and, comparatively, the less profitable we make working. This is bad, for we want people to work, not beg. Working is productive while begging is at best neutral and often a burden. Second, the beggar who receives the money might spend it on alcohol or drugs. 37
When I went to elementary school, I remember that I was very moved by a song named “Streets of London”. The song tells a heartbreaking story about some of London’s poorest, an old man in particular. Not long ago, however, when I heard the song on the radio, it struck me that the man in the song does not live that horrible a life after all. Judging from the lyrics of the song, the man has shoes, and occasional access to a newspaper. 38 So why should you give money to the beggar in the developed world instead of the starving child in Africa
It might be harsh to claim that it is immoral to give money to Western beggars. After all, it seems reasonable that you can spend the money as you like. 39 If our aim is to benefit ourselves, then giving money to beggars is not suitable. If our aim is to benefit others, then giving money to beggars is also wasteful.
In seeking to help others, we should not merely give to those who are geographically close to us and whose appearance arouses our sympathy. 40 To achieve this, we should first decide how much we are willing to spend helping others, and then donate money to the most efficient charity.
Many people die of hunger in Africa.
True as it might be, we should spend our money wisely.
Why not donate money to those in need of financial aid
Upon reflection, however, I have come to change my mind.
You almost certainly spend money helping the wrong people.
In a word where thousands die of hunger every day, that’s a pretty comfortable life.
Rather, we should aid those who are the least responsible for the situation they’re in.

Last year, during the summer break, my friends and I decided to go for a walk in the forest. The forest had paths, and we decided that we would hike along the paths and meet at a central point to have a drink later. The whole team had several groups and we had planned on meeting with the rest of the team after three hours. I had a lighter, a partially charged phone, and a bottle of water. We continued on our way towards the deeper part of the forest until we were far from any recognizable trail. After two hours, we were in the deepest part of the forest, and we could not trace our other friends.
All of a sudden, a bear came rushing along our path, and we all run in different directions. After running for about five minutes, I stood alone in a bush. I had no clue about my surroundings as I had never been there before. I shouted at my friends’ names loudly, but all was in vain: there was no reply, and the whole place was silent. I was confused and felt like crying as I realized I was alone with nothing to protect myself. With a lot of fear, I tried to trace the part where I had come from, but all was useless: I was lost.
As I walked along the path trying to locate my friends, I realized that I was tired, and nothing was looking familiar. I was out of food, water, and barely had any battery in my phone. I decided to walk through the bushes as the trees had grown so close together. I squeezed myself between the little trees. After some thirty minutes, it started raining heavily. Though I had heavy clothing, I was rained on until I was soaked up. I started freezing and praying to the God for protection and direction out of the forest.

As our population ages,it’s more important than ever that the elderly should be well taken care of.Firstly, young people should keep their parents or grandparents company regularly.Additionally,as a society,we should build more nursing homes where the elderly can be safe and enjoy their retirement together.
Hopefully,by working together we can improve the happiness level of our senior citizens in their later years. After their lifetime of hard work,it’s what they deserve.
第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
With darkness approaching, I tried to figure out various ways of making a signal to my colleagues. After many vain trials, it occurred to me that I had a lighter with me. I was wild with joy and decided to build a signal fire by collecting leaves and lighting them up for my friends to see the fire. Although it had been rained on, I was finally successful to light it. Everything in silence, only the howling of the winds and the cracking of twigs kept me company. I couldn’t help wondering what would have gone wrong because I had never had such kind of experience.
While sitting down and warming myself around the fire, I heard some distant noise. As the sounds got closer, I realized that those were my friends. I jumped with a lot of joy as tears filled my eyes because I knew I was safe. They shouted my name, and I replied very loudly knowing in my mind that I was saved. It showed me the importance of the use of the markings and of course the quality-calmness while adventuring in the forest. I also thought to myself that my being lost added a special taste to my adventurous vacation which I would remember all my life.
