We live in a world where there are nearly 6,000 different languages, so it is very easy for you to get 31
when you are translating. In general, the 32 away from home you get, the stranger the languages around you
become. But, have you ever noticed anything 33 among different languages
Language studies have shown that the 34 for “mama” and “papa” around the world are surprisingly
like each other. It was once believed that different languages shared something in common 35 several
languages started to develop from one language. That was the origin(起源)of many languages spoken around
Europe.
36 , this cannot explain why there are similarities too outside Europe, such as “nanay” and “tatay” in the
Philippines which also 37 in some places in Guangdong, China. So what could 38 this similarity
around the world
Russian-American linguist(语言学家)Roman Jakobson shares 39 he has found out. Maybe he is
40 .
“If you’re a(n) 41 making your first sounds, the easiest will be ‘ah’ because you can make it 42
doing anything with your tongue(舌头)or lips(嘴唇),” he said.
“M” and “n” are also created 43 by opening and closing the mouth, so these sounds often develop next.
In a similar 44 , the sounds that are closely related to “father”, like “p”, “d” and “t”, develop next. This could
be the reason why, around the world, a child’s first words are often “ma” or “pa”, leading parents to be 45
“mama” and “papa”.

Joe was an old man. The 75-year-old lived very happily in a village and had a beautiful family. His children
grew up and moved to different cities. Now, Joe has four grandchildren, and they visit him during their holidays.
During one vacation, Joe was preparing his home for the kids: cleaning and buying their favorite foods. After
he finished working, he realized he lost his favorite watch. The watch was a gift from his wife when their first
child was born. Joe treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. He was very upset about
losing it.
Once his grandchildren came, they promised him they would find the watch.
One granddaughter asked: “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went
missing ”
“I guess when I was cleaning the barn!” Joe replied.
The children looked for more than two hours with Joe, but they could not find it. The kids were now also
sad, but they tried to comfort their grandfather.
One grandson went back to the barn to look again. Joe asked why he was going there a second time. But the
little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to keep silent.
He was there for about 15 minutes and then rushed to his grandfather. He found the watch and happily gave it
to Joe. Joe was surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied: “I sat there without making a

The first and best of victories for a man is to conquer(征服) himself;to be conquered by himself is, of all
things, the most shameful,”says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his
impulses (冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.
A single angry word has lost many friends. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger,he would
check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are aware of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that
you can hold back rising anger. Many people have dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease.
“Whoever the gods would destroy, they first make them mad.”“Keep cool,”says Webster,“anger is not
argument.”“Be calm in arguing,”says GeorgeHerbert,“for anger makes miss a fault(失误).”
To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself.“Anger,”says Pythagoras,“begins
with foolishness and ends with regret.”You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he
conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.
Self-control is man's last and greatest victory.
If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to
govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he
lacks self-control, the very backbone(脊梁骨) and nerve(神经) of character are lacking too.
56. What's the main idea of the passage
A. Aman who keeps cool won't lose any game.
B. We should learn to be strong.
C. Self-control is important for a man
D. The great heroes in history knew how to control themselves.
57. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean
A. If you are mad, the gods will fail you.
B. If the gods want to fail you, they will make you mad first.
C. If you can't control yourself, you will be crazy.
D. If you lose your temp er first, gods will fail you first.
58. Which of the following is NOT true, according to passage
A. The first and best of victories for a man is to conquer himself.
B. You will make a small mistake serious if you don't keep cool.
C. Anger begins with foolishness and ends with regret.
D. You must measure a man's strength by the power of the feelings which conquer him.

A. Being calm in arguing B. Trying to make the other angry first.
C. Keeping your mouth shut D. Checking your temper or anger by speaking low
60. If a man lacks self control,
A. he will always be controlled by all the people all the time.
B. he will began with foolish everything every day and lack the strength.
C. moral(精神的) strength and nerve of character will lack as well.

We like to believe that before we make a decision, most of the time, we take time to consider all the facts
carefully. However, experts believe that only 5% of our decisions are based on a rational (理性的) thought process.
So,what influences our decision-making process
We often leave decision-making to our instincts (本能). Scientists have found out that if we had the choice,
we like to avoid pain rather than get something. In fact, we’re twice as happy when we try to avoid a bad situation
than when we experience a good one. This is why when companies send ads, they use phrases like “How to
avoid...”, “Don’t miss out!”, etc.
There are also physical reasons that affect our decision-making. Psychologist (心理学家) John Bargh carried
on an experiment where people were asked what they thought of a fictional person, while holding a cold or a hot
cup of coffee. Those holding the hot cup believed the person to be warmer and more sociable than those holding
the cold cup. So, when temperatures rise, the more likely we are to believe in strangers.
Stress is another thing which affects our decisions. Different situations are more or less stressful for different
people. Researchers have found, though, that women are more conservative (保守的 ) about decisions when
stressed, while men are to make riskier choices.
It may come as a surprise but every day from the minute we get up, we have to make countless decisions, like
what to wear, what coffee to have and so on. Each choice makes our brain a little bit more tired, and this affects
our decision-making. That’s why important people, like presidents wearing the same three suits all the time, want
to limit the small choices and spend more brain power on the bigger ones.
61. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
62. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Making fewer decisions helps to save brain power.
B. People sometimes judge (评判) a person by what he wears.
C. Every day we have to make lots of big decisions.
D. What people wear influences their decision making.
63. What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. We have to make a lot of decisions every day.
B. Each choice makes our brain a little more tired.
C. We have to decide what to wear from the minute we get up.
D. It is important for us to make a decision carefully.
64. What can we learn from the passage
A. We make most of the decisions after our careful thinking.
B. People are likely to be happier to avoid something bad.
C. As the temperature is low, we are likely to believe others.
D. People usually have risky decisions under heavy pressure.
65. The purpose of the passage is to_________.
A. warn people not to make risky decisions B. advise people to make rational decisions
C. tell us what influences decision-making D. show disadvantages of rational decisions

What is science fiction It’s created according to future or scientific discoveries. Many science
fiction stories usually cover space travel or life on other planets (行星). However, Chinese science
fiction writer Hai Ya takes a different path. He connects many of writings with Chinese culture and
history. One of them is The Space-Time Painter. The novel won the Hugo Award (雨果奖), the
world’s top science fiction prize.
Hai Ya got the idea for The Space-Time Painter after learning about a famous painting One
Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains. Wang Ximeng, a talented Song dynasty painter, created it at the age of 18.
But he died young and not much is known about him. This “gap” (空白) in history gave Hai Ya the space and
freedom to create the novel.
Hai Ya created a painter named Zhao Ximeng. His life experience is much like that of Wang Ximeng. He
paints for an emperor. After many hard times, his mind leaves his body and goes into a mysterious space. When
creating the story, Hai Ya not only used his imagination but also studied history with care. He tried to mix Chinese
culture with science fiction.
In order to complete The Space-Time Painter, Hai Ya explored (探索) a “gap” in history. In fact, he isn’t a
full-time writer. Working in a bank, he is busy with his work. So he also needed to explore “gaps” in his daily life.
He takes full advantages of his free time to keep on with his interest in writing science fiction.
As we cheer for Hai Ya’s big success, we all can think about what “gaps” we can explore. Are you interested

It starts at 9:00 in the morning and ends at 8:00 in the evening. You can get there by Bus No. 202 or No. 305. It's easy to find the place. The activity will certainly give you unforgettable joy. You can play a lot of different games such as hideandseek there. The workers of the centre will also prepare different kinds of tasty food for you. Not only does the activity have games and food for you, but also it gives you a chance to enjoy two famous singers' voices. Tickets will be sold at every underground station on June 14th. The money raised from tickets selling will be given to poor areas, where people live a hard life. Don't miss this chance to have fun and help the poor people at the same time! I sincerely hope many of you can take part in the activity. And I hope all of you have a great time.

Spread Chinese Culture
With the development of China, more and more people are very interested in Chinese culture.
In the past, people liked to buy products from other countries and travel abroad. They thought foreign products were better in quality and foreign scenery was more beautiful. But now, they choose Chinese-made products and travel around China. Chinese products have improved a lot in quality and design, and our country has many beautiful and different tourist places.
My favorite traditional art form is Chinese paper-cutting. It has a long history. It began a long time ago. People use scissors and paper to make different patterns. These patterns usually have good meanings like happiness, being rich, and family reunions. It is not just an art but also shows people’s wishes. It makes me proud of our culture. We should spread it to every part of the world so that more people can enjoy the charm of Chinese traditional culture.
