Do you like listening to pop music The question asked at the beginning could be “Do you know why many pop songs are about 3 minutes long ”
This can date back to the early 20th century. At that time, shellac records(虫胶唱片) first appeared. Usually a record could hold up to five minutes of music on each of its two sides.
The late 1940s saw the birth of the smaller, cheaper vinyl record(黑胶唱片). It could hold only three minutes of music on each side.
Later, tapes appeared in 1964 and CDs in 1976. But three-minute pop songs weren’t out of fashion(时尚). Radio stations could fit more advertisements into a program if the songs stayed short. Today, most people listen to pop songs online. The success of a song is now less about its sales and more about its number of plays. As a result, many songwriters fill their records with short songs. They want more songs to be played each time.

Ancient(古代的) artists moved more than 1,000 big stone statues(雕塑) across Easter Island with no machines to help them. The largest statue weighed 82 tons.
These statues were built at least 800 years ago by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island, in the South Pacific Ocean. Once they were finished, the stones had to be moved as far as 11 miles from their quarry(采石场) into place. Ancient people had no metal tools or wheels to get the work done. Their method was a mystery until 2012, when researchers built a replica(复制品) to solve the mystery.
The scientists showed that just 18 persons with three strong ropes could have moved the statue. In this way pulling one statue at a time, they could have “walked” the statues on their large, rounded bases.
Since the islanders didn’t write down their skill, scientists can’t be sure this is the method. But it’s the most likely answer. The old legend says “The statues walked into place”. Maybe that was the truth!

For some children, clothing is a way of showing belonging to a certain group. Three persons were sitting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped The Englishman asked, “It’s common to tip ten percent, right ” The American cried, “Oh, I was planning to leave twenty percent.” The Chinese woman asked, “What’s a tip ”
Although it is not a tradition to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in the United States. There, it is common to tip about fifteen to twenty percent of the bill. Usually people give tips to a waiter or a waitress.
The US tops the list of tipping. Waiters and waitresses are expecting to get fifteen to twenty percent of the bill. So if you order one hundred dollars in food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least fifteen dollars, making your payment one hundred and fifteen dollars in all.
Why is this Many waiters and waitresses get the lowest paid and tips make up for that. Some states pay their service only 2.13 dollars per hour.
It is not just for waiters either. Hotel workers, hairdressers and taxi drivers also expect tips. Tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Thailand. However, in Japan, there is a no-tipping culture. If you try to give a waiter or waitress money, you may actually upset him or her.
