The time before sound came into films is called the silent times. At that time, people could only see the motions of actors and actresses but could not hear their voices. The films made in that way are called silent films. The first silent film was made around 1860. Silent films did not become popular until 20 years later.
Filmmakers had thought of recording sound with motion pictures ever since they began making films. Anyway, because of the technical (技术的) problems, most films were silent before the late 1920s. Though there was no dialogue in the films, the silent picture was a worldwide language. People could understand the films without sound.
Before silent films were replaced (取代) by talking films, the art of motion pictures had developed very well. The visual quality (视觉质量) of silent films (especially those made during the 1920s) was often very good. Some film fans believe that the visual influences of silent films were better than talking films.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists (拳头). But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead! Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals (职业人士). They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen.
Stuntmen perform tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress (床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also needs a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman's success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is "blown up" in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff(悬崖)a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stunt girls too.

Athletics vs. Gardening
The students of Sunshine School were asked to give their opinions about whether the school should run an athletic programme or start a vegetable garden.
Liz, Grade 9
An athletic programme is much better than gardening. How are we ever going to win anything at the Inter-School Athletics without proper training We need experts (专家) to teach us things like throwing and high jump.
I know lots of kids say they're not interested in competitions but that's because they’ve never won anything. If they got better training and started winning things, they would soon change their minds.
People always say kids don't get enough exercise. Just because you do gardening outdoors and don't make it exercise. So I don’t see how it matters.
Athletics is much better for fitness and lots of kids can have a go at the same time. I don’t think there would be enough jobs for everyone in a garden. So I think a garden is a really bad idea. I don’t know why we’re even considering it.
Sam, Grade 9
I think a vegetable garden is a great idea. We already do hours of sports, including athletics. And not everyone likes sport.
Gardening is a great way to get exercise without worrying about whether you’re good at it, or whether you’re going to win. And you really do exercise when you garden. There's digging, weeding and watering. Even picking things can be hard work - pumpkins aren’t light!
There are lots of kids around here who don’t have gardens so they can't grow things even they want to. If you really want to do more sport, you can join a club.
And think about it: What helps you to be good at sports You need to eat lots of fruit and
vegetables. If we learn to cook all the things we grow, the garden will keep us all fit and healthy and then we’ll be better at sports.
1. What's Liz's opinion
2. What is one reason Liz gives for saying "a garden is a really bad idea"
3. Why does Sam say "And you really do exercise when you garden"
4. According to Sam, what is the role of gardening in sports
