Vijay Gupta is known to classical music lovers across the United States. He serves as the first violinist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In that job, he often plays to large crowds, including many very rich people. When he is not performing, he organizes concerts for homeless people. “They have reminded me why I became a musician.” He said.
Last week, Gupta was recognized for being a founder and the artistic director of Street Symphony. The group has performed at homeless shelters, jails and halfway houses for about eight years. Gupta is among the 25 winners of the 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the “Genius Grant”. Each winner will receive $ 625,000 over five years to use as they wish. The money is coming from a private group, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It awards grants (补助金) to people whose work it considers exceptional and whose work “inspires hope in us all”. Gupta said he got the idea for Street Symphony while teaching Nathaniel Ayers, a trained musician whose mental illness led to his homelessness.
The 31-year-old winner said he did not know yet how he would spend the money. He has been a performer since the age of seven and the award will give him “space to breathe, plan and look ahead”.
Another winner is Rebecca Sandefur, an associate professor (副教授) of sociology and law in the University of Illinois. The Associated Press says her research actively supports new ways to involve poor communities in the U. S. justice system.
47-year-old Sandefur created the first national mapping of civil legal aid providers. It shows which states have the financial(金融的)resources to provide such aid and which don’t. She also found that the cost of legal services was only one of the things preventing poor people from getting lawyers. Among the others were fears of unfairness(不公平)in the legal system. Sandefur noted that a lot of attention had been paid to problems with the criminal justice system, but more attention must be paid to the civil side of the law, which also affected millions of people.
4. Why does Gupta win the award
A. For his achievements in classical music.
B. For performing for large crowds.
C. For organizing a group playing for the homeless.
D. For the companionship with Nathaniel Ayers.
5. What do we know about MacArthur Fellowship

B. It offers $ 625,000 to 25 winners in 2018.
C. It allows the winners to use the money freely.
D. It awards people who make great contributions to society.
6. What was the extraordinary thing that Sandefur did
A. She made it easier to get legal help for the poor.
B. She made the legal system fairer.
C. She paid more attention to the criminal justice system.
D. She offered legal aid to the poor freely.

When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends asked me how I could stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kinds of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.
It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi was the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead.
When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, some people chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.
Once I got to the park, I picked a bench over near the play area where kids played while their parents sat nearby. I could see and hear almost everything from there. People watching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there’s so much to see and hear in the park!
Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men’s conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn’t hear the rest, but it must be hilarious because his friend’s laugh was so loud.
When I’m old, I hope that I will also have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do.
8. Some of the author’s friends think “the sounds of life” are very________.
A. unpleasant B. unique
C. magical D. interesting
9. The author took the bus to the park because________.
A. there was no other transport to go there
B. he wanted to see more about people’s life
C. it was the most convenient way
D. his friend advised him to do so
10. The author closed his eyes in order to ________.
A. have a good rest
B. hide himself from view
C. enjoy the sounds of life
D. avoid talking with the two old men
11. The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”.
A. truly different B. quite popular
C. rather strange D. extremely funny
A 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据第一段“When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends asked me how I could stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kinds of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.(当我醒来时,我给自己做了早餐,坐下来听交通的声音。我的一些朋友问我怎么能忍受住在这么吵的地方。的确,我家附近总是有各种各样的噪音,但对我来说,这些都是生活的声音)”可知,作者和他的一些朋友对生活环境中的嘈杂声音持不同意见。对作者而言,这些声音是生命之声,而作者的朋友则无法忍受。故选A项。
由第三段中的“When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, some people chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.(当你乘坐公共汽车时,你可以看到这个城市的很多地方。在公共汽车上可能会很吵,有些人在打电话,有些人在和朋友聊天,还有一些人在放音乐。这就像交通的声音一样,尽管公共汽车上的噪音代表了人们工作、放松和生活)”可知,作者乘坐公交车去公园是为了更好地观察人们的生活。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see.(通常,我喜欢闭上眼睛。

After traveling ten years and hundreds of millions of kilometers, a small probe (探测器) called Philae has for the first time landed on the surface of a comet, a solar system object made of ice and rock.
Philae was sent from the European Space Agency’s main Rosetta spaceship early Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Originally, the mission of the spaceship was to target Comet 46P but when the launch was delayed due to problems with the Ariane 5 launch vehicle, the mission was redirected to Comet 67P, to study the appearance and materials that make up Comet 67P.
The Philae research probe left its mother ship Rosetta and then began a trip toward the comet and landed on its surface hours later. The effort to land on the comet was considered dangerous because just before the planned landing, scientists identified problems in Philae’s active descent system thruster (推进器) used to land the probe.
Rosetta has been orbiting Comet 67P since August 2014. However, it was sent up into space in March of 2004. The spaceship circled the sun until it was in position to meet with the comet.
Comets are the most primitive (原始的) objects in the solar system. Scientists think that they have kept a record of the physical and chemical processes that occurred during the early period when planets were formed. By studying Comet 67P’s make-up and history, scientists wish to unlock the secret of the solar system and even the origin of human lives.
The Philae probe did a series of scientific experiments. Philae examined the materials that make up the comet looking for organic, or carbon-based materials, and inorganic materials. It lasted until March 2015, when the comet was too close to the sun and the surface temperature was too high for Philae to operate.
12. What was Rosetta launched to do
A To send Philae to Comet 67P safely.
B. To study the appearance of Comet 46P.
C. To collect information about Comet 67P.
D. To research on the make-up of the solar system.
13. Why was it hard for Philae to land on Comet 67P
A. Due to technological issues.
B. As a result of power failure.
C. Because of lack of experience.
D. Due to problems in radio systems.
14. What do scientists think of the research on comets
A. Challenging. B. Satisfying. C. Meaningful. D. Impractical.
15. What may be the best title for the text
A. Philae landing on Comet 67P
B. Another comet found in space
C. One step further in geography research
D. Great improvement in spaceship design
C 13. A 14. C 15. A

根据第二段“the mission was redirected to Comet 67P, to study the appearance and materials that make up Comet 67P.”
根据第三段“The effort to land on the comet was considered dangerous because just before the planned landing, scientists identified problems in Philae’s active descent system thruster (推进器) used to land the probe.” 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“By studying Comet 67P’s make-up and history, scientists wish to unlock the secret of the solar system and even the origin of human lives.” 以及最后一段“The Philae probe did a series of scientific experiments. Philae examined the materials that make up the comet looking for organic, or carbon-based materials, and inorganic materials.”
根据第一段“After traveling ten years and hundreds of millions of kilometers, a small probe (探测器) called Philae has for the first time landed on the surface of a comet, a solar system object made of ice and rock.” 以及第二段“the mission was redirected to Comet 67P, to study the appearance and materials that make up Comet 67P.” 故选A项。

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare (瞪眼看) at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want ” the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.
“Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one.” The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小狗雕像) on the wall. “Do you collect dogs ” the little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. “Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No boy, I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Paragraph 2:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The boy headed back down to the old man’ house with the figurine. Though the thought of knocking at the old man’s door filled the boy with fear, he still knocked on the door, waiting breathlessly. Finally, it opened, and out came the old man. Seeing the boy holding a well-wrapped dog figurine, he looked very astonished but still glared at him without a word. Determined to break the ice, the boy gave the old man a gift with a precious card attached, expressing his care. A warm glow spreading inside the old man, he could say nothing but to hug the boy tightly, tears of appreciation welling up. Out of gratitude, he bought a magazine from the boy and saw him off.
From that day on something changed inside the old man. In the morning, rays of the sun were shining through the open window, bringing warmth to the old man’s newly-painted house dotted with flowers in bloom. The neighbors also found him hanging out and greeting others with a bright smile, which everyone didn’t expect. More surprisingly, showing his precious collections to the boy and other children became a great pleasure of his daily life. Every time he saw the twinkle in those lively children’s eyes, he felt the precious satisfaction from within. It was because of the boy’s kindness that he realized the true spirit of life and wasn’t drowned in sorrow and loneliness anymore.

7. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. Grants winners, inspiring the poor
B. The city homeless, in need of help
C. Vijay Gupta, an extraordinary violinist
D. MacArthur Foundation, awarding exceptional work
C

12. What was Rosetta launched to do
A. To send Philae to Comet 67P safely.
B To study the appearance of Comet 46P.
C. To collect information about Comet 67P.
D. To research on the make-up of the solar system.
13. Why was it hard for Philae to land on Comet 67P
A. Due to technological issues.
B. As a result of power failure.
C. Because of lack of experience.
D. Due to problems in radio systems.
14. What do scientists think of the research on comets
A. Challenging. B. Satisfying. C. Meaningful. D. Impractical.
15. What may be the best title for the text
A. Philae landing on Comet 67P
B. Another comet found in space
C. One step further in geography research
D. Great improvement in spaceship design

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out.
