Twenty years ago I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown ”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
“How much do I owe you ” she asked.
“Nothing.” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held on to me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”
1. The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ________.
A. see some places for the last time B. show she was familiar with the city

A. wanted to help her B. shut off the meter by mistake
C. had received her payment in advance D. was in a hurry to take other passengers
3. What can we learn from the story
A. Giving is always a pleasure.
B. People should respect each other.
C. People should learn to appreciate others’ concern
D. An act of kindness can bring people great joy
【答案】1. A 2. A 3. D

【1题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段““Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”(“哦,我不着急,”她说。“我正在去临终医院的路上。我没有任何家人了。医生说我的时间不多了。”)”以及第七段“For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.(在接下来的两个小时里,我们开车穿过城市。她指给我看她曾经工作过的那幢楼,她曾经住过的那个社区,还有一家家具店,那里曾经是一个舞厅,她小时候曾在那里跳舞)”可知,老妇人时日无多,所以选择搭乘出租车穿过城市,以便最后一次看一些地方。故选A项。

For many years the school system in Finland (芬兰) has been very successful. Finland is not only the top European country but also competes with Asian giants like Shanghai, Singapore and South Korea. But what makes the educational system in this small country so different from others in the western world
Until the 1960s Finland’s school system had been influenced largely by its neighbor, the Soviet Union. Most students left school after six years; some went on to private (私人的) schools. Only the wealthy ones got a better education. In the middle of the 1960s the Finnish government saw the need to change and modernize (使现代化) their education system if they wanted to be internationally competitive.
Most of Finland’s schools get their money from the government. The people who are in charge of (负责,掌管) the education system, from teachers to officials are trained teachers, not politicians (政治家) like in other countries.
Teachers work with their pupils (小学生) in school as much as possible. When teachers are not with the pupils, they spend a lot of time in schools working on the curriculum and new projects.
All Finnish children, whether they come from the city or the country, whether from a rich or poor family, have the same chances in education. There are not so many differences between the wealthy and poor, as in America or other western European countries. Education experts say that there is very little difference between very good and the worst students. Two thirds of Finnish pupils move on to higher education, the highest rate (比率) in the European Union.

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it’s not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”
A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people’s health, including where and how they were grown and stored. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways. For example, frying was the worst way to cook.
What cooked with the vegetables can also be important When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them.

My father had always been an alert observer of human character. Within seconds of meeting someone, he could sum up their strengths and weaknesses. It was always a challenge to see if any of my boyfriends could pass Dad’s test. None did. Dad was always right—they didn’t pass my test either. After Dad died, I wondered how I’d figure it out on my own.
That’s when Jack arrived on the scene. He was different from any other guy I’d dated. He could sit for hours on the piano bench with my mother, discussing some composers. My brother Rick loudly announced that Jack wasn’t a turkey like the other guys I’d brought home. Jack passed my family’s test. But what about Dad’s
Then came my mother’s birthday. The day he was supposed to drive, I got a call. “Don’t worry,” he said, “but I’ve been in an accident. I’m fine, but I need you to pick me up.”
When I got there, we rushed to a flower shop for something for Mom. “How about gardenias(栀子花) ” Jack said, pointing at a beautiful white corsage (胸花). The florist(花商) put the corsage in a box.
The entire ride, Jack was unusually quiet. “Are you all right ” I asked. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking,” he said. “I might be moving.” Moving Then he added, “Moving in with you.” I nearly put the car on the sidewalk. “What ” I asked. “I think we should get married,” he said. He told me he’d planned his proposal in a fancy restaurant, but after the accident, he decided to do it right away. “Yes,” I whispered. We both sat dumbfounded, tears running down our cheeks. I’d never known such a tender moment. If only Dad were here to give his final approval.
“Oh, let’s just go inside.” Jack laughed. My mother opened the door. “Happy Birthday!” we shouted. Jack handed the box to her. She opened it up. Suddenly, her eyes were filled with tears. “Mom, what’s wrong ” I asked. “I’m sorry,” she said, wiping her eyes. “This is only the second gardenia corsage I’ve ever received. I was given one years ago, long before you kids were born.” “From who ” I asked. “Your father,” Mom said. “He gave me one right before we were engaged.” My eyes locked on Jack’s as I blinked away(眨掉) tears. Dad’s test I knew Jack had passed.

At dawn, she suddenly said, “I’m tired.

The people who are in charge of (负责,掌管) the education system from teachers to officials are trained teachers, not politicians (政治家) like in other countries.
4. What did the Finland government do in the middle of the 1960s
A. They encouraged students to go to private school.
B. They lengthened preschool education.
C. They changed the school system.
D. They learned modern education from neighboring countries.
5. We can learn from the text that ________
