Unit 2 Wildlife Protection 测试卷
一、阅读理解
Every day for a week, a strange, happy visitor would drop to play with Vanessa Prior’s pet dog Bobby. Prior thought Bobby had made a new dog friend. It seemed very friendly and got well along with Bobby. They would run after each other, play on the pool cover, gently wrestle (摔跤) or nap side by side.
At first she thought it was a wild dog. But when she posted a photo of the two playing on her Facebook, a pet rescue centre called her. The group told her the Atlanta Wolf Project had been trying to catch the wolf for months, but they failed. Prior gave them new hope.
Because of the wolfs friendship with her pet dog, it was likely to come back to her backyard. Researchers hoped Prior could help them. When they put some traps (陷阱) in the back of her yard, Prior got a very complicated (复杂的) feeling. She couldn’t describe what it was. The wolf would be in a safe place, but she would do something that harmed Bobby’s feelings.
Researchers told Prior that they would take the rare, black wolf to the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary where it would live with another wolf. They didn’t think it a satisfying situation for a wild animal like a wolf to have a connection with humans’ life. They need to keep a natural awareness to humans and pets and keep to themselves.
Wolf experts added they would look into the genetics of the animal to try to learn why it liked to get close to people and tried to play with their pets. Some experts believe it could have a history with well-meaning humans. Prior had not expected that she and Bobby should meet such a special and lovely wolf. They just hoped the dear friend all the best.

Photosynthesis (光合作用) is a unique skill of green plants—they turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and food via sunlight. A group of Chinese scientists, however, have “copied” the process on animals.
To understand the new breakthrough, it is important to know how photosynthesis works. Plants take in carbon dioxide and water from the air and soil. Within the plant cell, the water is oxidized. This transforms the water into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖). The plant then releases the oxygen back into the air and stores energy within the glucose molecules.
In the study, the researchers from Zhejiang University developed an independent and controllable photosynthetic system, according to the study published in Nature in early December, 2022. They separated thylakoids (内囊体), a part of the cell where light reactions take place in plants, from young spinach (菠菜) leaves. The scientists then wrapped the thylakoids with the cover of animal cells, which made the implanted thylakoids more acceptable to foreign bodies. The mice used in the study were suffering from arthritis (骨关节炎), meaning cells in their cartilage (软骨) had degenerated and could not be repaired by themselves. With the thylakoids implanted into the mice and exposed to light, the mice recovered. Their metabolism (新陈代谢) returned to normal. In arthritis, patients usually have energy loss since fewer energy-carrying molecules are generated. The implant, however, can correct the imbalance by storing more energy via photosynthesis. The researchers also claimed that their tests would have medical usage. It can be used as part of the solution for degenerative diseases because the natural photosynthesis system may repair cells. It may also delay the aging process in cells.
The study showed “an exciting achievement that opens up possibilities of metabolism engineering,” commented one of the paper’s reviewers Francisco Cejudo, from the University of Seville in Spain, reported Xinhua.

The conventional wisdom about insects has been that they are unthinking, unfeeling creatures whose behavior is entirely hardwired (天生的). But in the 1990s researchers began making surprising discoveries about insect minds. Some species of wasps (黄蜂) recognize their nest mates’ faces and acquire impressive social skills. For example, they can infer the fighting strengths of other wasps relative to their own just by watching other wasps fight among themselves.
Given the substantial work on the complexity of insect cognition (认知), it might seem surprising that it took scientists so long to ask whether, if they are that smart, could also be sentient, capable of feeling. Since we have no direct window into the inner world of an animal that cannot verbally communicate its thoughts and feelings, the question of whether insects are sentient remained academic.
15 years ago, I performed an experiment in which we asked whether bumblebees could learn about t hreat from their natural enemies. We built a plastic spider model with a mechanism that would briefly trap a bumblebee between two sponges before releasing it. The bumblebees showed a significant change in their behavior after being attacked by the robotic spider. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they learned to avoid flowers with spiders and meticulously scanned every flower before landing. Curiously, however, they some times even fled from imaginary threats, scanning and then abandoning a perfectly safe, spider-free flower. Although this incidental observation did not constitute formal ev idence of an emotionlike state, it did open the door to the idea that such states might exist in insects.
Some research suggested that insects might have positive states of mind. Researchers discovered that bees actively seek out drugs such as nicotin e and caffein e when given the choice and even treat themselves with nicotin e when sick. Male fruit flies stressed by being robbed of mating opportunities prefer food containing alcohol, and bees even show withdrawal symptoms when removed from an alcohol-rich diet.
Why would insects consume mind-altering substances if there isn't a mind to alter But these suggestive hints of negative and positive mind states still fell short of what was needed to demonstrate that insects are sentient.

A dinosaur footprint found by a four-year-old girl on a Welsh beach has been regarded as the “finest find in a decade” by experts.
Lily Wilder was walking her dog with her family at Bendricks Beach in Barry when she spotted the fossilized (石化的) footprint in the rocks. Her mother said that after making the find, she uploaded a picture to Facebook and was shocked to receive a “huge response” from fossil hunters. Mrs. Wilder then contacted National Museum Wales, who advised her to take down the post to avoid a wild rush of fossil fans towards the protected section of land.
The 110-mm footprint fossil has now been legally detached, after permission was given by the landowners and Natural Resources Wales, and is currently in safekeeping. The footprint fossil, believed to be around 220 million years old, will be taken to National Museum Wales, on a temporary or permanent basis.
Cindy Howells, who arranged for the legal removal of the footprint, said: “This is an amazing discovery. It’s the best-preserved footprint fossil that’s ever been found in South Wales-normally they’re hollow (中空的) or less well-defined, but on this one you can see the claws (爪子) and the points at the end. This discovery is unique and worth protecting — we will be studying the footprint and it will teach us a lot more about dinosaur feet and their bone and muscle structure.”
The footprint is believed to be that of a meat-eating dinosaur from the early days when dinosaurs were first starting to evolve (进化), around 10 million years after dinosaurs first emerged on Earth.
Lily, who now plans to get more dinosaur toys, will forever be named as the footprint fossil’s finder and will be invited into the museum once it reopens.
13.Why was Mrs. Wilder advised to take down her post
A.To avoid misleading fossil hunters. B.To block out negative responses online.
C.To keep her daughter from being exposed. D.To protect the footprint from fossil fans.
14.What does the underlined word “detached” in paragraph 3 mean

Should We Create More National Parks to Save Endangered Animals
Don’t you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct 17 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
18 If this environment is destroyed — for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits — many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. 19
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. 20 They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. 21 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B.Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D.These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E.Firstly, national parks protect these animals’ natural environment.
F.They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.
G.There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.

五、书面表达
48.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The most delightful and unusual thing I paid for in the last summer was a pair of ducklings. One day I spotted a friend’s photo of two tiny golden ducklings in her living room. I message d her immediately. She was fostering(照料) the baby ducks for a farm. As the farm explains on its website, you can adopt the newborns and parent them until they grow into their “adulthood” when you could choose to keep them or take them back. For $165, the farm would bring us everything we needed to foster ducklings and also an activity for Leo. This program would provide us with what we’d been lacking: joy and fellowship. “Were getting ducklings!” I proudly announced.
About 10 days later, a man from the farm arrived at our home and handed over a shoebox housing a pair of baby ducks. Leo and I held them in our hands, each one a tiny, almost weightless parcel of silky gold. Leo immediately cast himself as their father, and the ducklings accepted the role happily, waddling(摇摆) at his feet and slipping on our hardwood floors. Leo kissed them on their beaks(喙)and they bit his lip slightly, which he concluded meant they loved him.
After a few weeks, the ducklings tripled in size, and the fairytale took a turn. Much as we loved them, it was time to make the choice. They were about to enter adulthood, and it was getting inconvenient to keep the many longer. It was only then that I realized I didn’t know what would happen to them back at the farm. I called the farm, and I was told that actually our ducklings would likely serve as a“wonderful supper”.

37.Dear Harry,
I’m Li Hua, a student who is in charge of the Wildlife Conservation Association of an international high school. Our association is planning to hold an exhibition of photographs next Friday, whose theme is protecting the endangered wild animals. Knowing that you are an animal lover, I’m writing to invite you to join in it.
As we all know, an increasing number of wild animals are in danger. That is why we should take immediate action to protect them. We would like to hold the exhibition in front of the library, where a lot of photos will be on show to remind us of what serious problems the wild animals are faced with and what we should do to help them. Hopefully it can help arouse our awareness of protecting wild animals.
I would like to appreciate it if you could take my invitation into account. I look forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Plus, I didn’t have the heart to tell Leo to accept such a miserable fate for his beloved ducklings. Dreadfully guilty, I launched a sort of duck adoption agency, desperately emailing and calling animal shelters in the hope of finding them a safe home.
I was losing hope when I received an email from a woman who lived on a hobby farm. She was looking for more ducks, and she was vegetarian, which made her a perfect candidate. We carefully packed everything for our ducks before heading to their new home. As we entered the hobby farm, I felt as if we had slipped into a fairytale: bunnie shopping around sunlit grass, miniature horses trotting on the rich pasture, and grown-up ducks wandering about with their which feathers dancing against summer clouds. Reluctant and rejoiced at the same time, we left out ducks for this dream house.
