Jace Tunnell, the founder of Nurdle I troll and Reserve Director at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, is listening to the same question often.
“I hear every day, somebody says, ‘What is a nurdle ’” he said.
Tunnell explained nurdles are tiny balls of plastic that are typically used to make almost every plastic item we use, so they’re everywhere! He said nurdles are usually spilled (溢出) during transport from cargo ships or railroad cars. “These things would be out here for hundreds of years if we’re not picking them up,” Tunnell said while on a recent Nurdle Patrol cleanup along Galveston Bay.
Since 2018, Nurdle Patrol has grown to thousands of volunteers worldwide. Many people -volunteer with Nurdle Patrol and work for the Galveston Bay Foundation. Nurdle Patrol groups upload their findings to the nonprofit’s website map. It’s marked in colors to show where the highest concentration of nurdles is found.
“They look natural, and birds think that they’re food,” Tunnell said, “Birds, fish, sea turtles and other sea animals can eat nurdles and finally die from hunger because of a false sensation of fullness and lack of nutrition.”
I ended up finding 123 nurdles in 10 minutes. That’s high concentration,” Tunnell said about a recent cleanup. “I plan to take those to an elected official and say, ‘Look, these are what I found on our beaches here. We need to do something about this.’ So, it kind of puts in motion change that can happen.”
Nurdle Patrol has sent out hundreds of kits (工具包) globally, many to schools and volunteer organizations, with information about gathering nurdles and reporting the findings safely. Anyone can request a kit through their website.

A team of students in the Netherlands has designed and built a new car that is completely powered by the sun. The car, called Stella Terra, is the first solar-powered car that can travel for a long journey without needing a charging station(充电站).
Students at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have been working on solar-powered cars for years. In order to create a car that the team was planning for, the students had to design the car from top to bottom.
On top, of course, are the solar panels(太阳能板). Most solar panels are only about 20%efficient(效率高的). That means they waste about 80% of the sunlight they get. But the Stella Terra’s solar panels are 26% efficient. They waste far less sunlight than even the best solar panels you can buy. Thanks to its powerful solar panels, when it's sunny, the car can run for 710 kilometers a day. Stella Terra can carry two people, and has a top speed of 145 kph.The car weighs just 1,200 kilograms. That's about two-thirds the weight of a typical car.
The team recently took the car on its biggest test——a challenging 1,000-kilometer test drive across Morocco. The car had to travel through forests as well as dry riverbeds. It had to drive across burning desert sands and climb up mountain roads. The car succeeded in doing all of this——and all without ever stopping at a charging station.
The team is very proud of their car, but they won't be worried if car companies start to copy their idea. In fact, they will share the idea before car companies are able to build a similar car.
8.What can we learn about the car
A.It can travel more freely. B.It's terribly expensive.
C.It has been out of style. D.It has come on the market.
9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The appearance of Stella Terra. B.The hardship the team suffered.
C.The members of the design team. D.The basic information on the car.
10.Why did the team drive the car across Morocco
A.To find more buyers. B.To test out its performances.
C.To improve their driving skills. D.To enjoy the amazing sight.
11.What does the team want to do concerning the idea
A.Keep it top secret. B.Put it into production.
C.Sha re it with car producers. D.Sell it to other students.

Many of us are lonelier than ever. We can go shopping and avoid speaking to a single person. Automated voices on phones and machines suck the contact and relational element out of day-to-day life, so much so that experts say that we are experiencing a loneliness disease.
According to Dr. Lalitaa, loneliness is the feeling we get when our need for rewarding social contact and relationships is not met. But loneliness is not always the same as being alone. Loneliness is a state of mind linked to wanting human contact but feeling alone. People can be alone and not feel lonely, or they can have contact with people and still experience feelings of loneliness.
Loneliness is a universal human emotion that is both complex and unique to each individual. There are many contributing factors to loneliness, such as illness, relationships breaking down, moving country, changing jobs or not being understood by co-workers, retiring, starting university, etc.
We cannot underestimate the impact loneliness can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. According to research, loneliness has comparable health risks to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and people who feel lonely are more likely to die earlier and suffer from heart attacks. Dr. Lalitaa says, “People often say to me, ’It’s too late to meet new people as an adult.’ Having human connection can look different for each person, but this can become a block, stopping them going out, trying new things and connecting with new people. Remember,it is never too late to make good, meaningful connections.”
However, don’t put pressure on yourself. A meaningful relationship takes time. It is not just created overnight. Also, take some time to sit with yourself and venture (冒险) into some of the things that you like doing. “The first thing I would say is not to deny or distance the feeling. Acknowledge it and then you can choose to focus on ways to help yourself,” says Dr. Lalitaa.
12.How does the author clarify what loneliness is
A.By stating arguments.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By employing figures.
13.Why is smoking cigarettes mentioned in the text
A.To explain the causes of loneliness.
B.To illustrate the harm from loneliness.
C.To overestimate the impact of loneliness.
D.To emphasize the universality of loneliness.
14.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.Lack of appealing reward.
B.Dependence on the network.
C.The regret for the passing youth.
D.The idea of being too late for new relations.
15.What does Dr. Lalitaa consider as priority when dealing with loneliness
A.Having new experience.
B.Telling it from being alone.
C.Being aware of and recognizing it.
D.Making friends from all walks of life.

Be Energy Smart
As we know, we are currently experiencing an energy crisis and saving electricity should become a way of life.
Being energy smart means doing the same with less-using electricity more efficiently or in reduced amounts. First of all, consider installing energy-efficient equipment and appliances. More importantly, develop smart energy habits. Tum down the air-conditioner to a reasonable temperature, which can reduce your electricity bill by 5%. Also, tum off the lights in empty rooms and hang clothes out to dry etc. All of these can matter a lot.
Let’s take action right now. Thank you.
47.【答案】The First Lady was saddened to hear this. She managed to calm Anna down before asking her to share with her all the unpleasant things that had happened to her at school. After Anna finished, the First Lady told her that it was necessary for her to pour out her feelings whenever something unhappy happened to her. She also suggested Anna make good use of her excellent academic achievements to help her classmates with their study, saying that she could eventually develop real friendships with them. Then the First Lady told Anna’s classmates stories about her childhood that were similar to Anna’s.
After hearing the First Lady’s speech, all the children realized that they had been rude to Anna. They felt regretful and realized that they should have been happy to have a friend that got such good marks and made such a big effort at school. Then they made up their minds to follow Anna’s example and their hard work paid off. Their marks began to improve little by little. And between classes they always played together without ignoring Anna. From then on they were very happy and learned the lesson of respecting others.
