Do you like to eat mooncakes Do you know that the history of mooncakes is related to two wars
In the Tang dynasty, there was an emperor named Li Shimin. Once, his army won a war and returned on the Mid-Autumn Festival. While Li was celebrating with his army, a Tibetan trader (西藏商人) gave him some round cakes as a gift. Li was happy and sent these cakes to his soldiers. After that, these round cakes became popular. Many people ate them during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Later, the cakes were named as “mooncakes.”
Zhu Yuanzhang was the first emperor of the Ming dynasty. He ended the Yuan dynasty through an uprising (起义). When he organized the uprising, it was difficult to send messages secretly (秘密地). One of his friends came up with an idea. He gave mooncakes with a note hidden inside of them to other people. The note read, “Uprising on the fifteenth night of the eighth lunar (农历的) month.” After the successful uprising, Zhu gave mooncakes as gifts to his people. Our world is full of animals and plants. They make the world lively and colorful. Every living thing needs to reproduce(繁殖) to create more members. How do plants reproduce? They have to spread their seeds to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way to spread seeds is through gravity(重力) . Many seeds are inside of fruit. When fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Apples spread this way. When you see this happening, you’ll think of a certain scientist.
Some plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions(蒲公英) are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. Sometimes animals pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Some animals eat the seeds: While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place. Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that appeals to ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.

As the days are getting colder, you might wish you could magically turn into a bear and spend the winter sleeping. In fact, scientists are looking for ways to let humans hibernate, too!
During hibernation, an animal’s heart rate and breathing slow down. They can save energy when there is little food in the winter months.
Japanese researchers have found the secret behind hibernation—the “Q neurons”. These neurons in animals’ brains can put them into a hibernation state. The researchers also did operations on mice after turning on the mice’s “Q neurons”. It turned out that during hibernation, the operations do less harm to the mice.
According to the team, humans’ “Q neurons” cannot be turned on and off as easily as the mice’s. But they are confident in copying the mice’s hibernation in humans. That means we could let people “hibernate” when having operations, causing less damage to their bodies.
In recent years, more scientists are getting to realize the benefits of hibernation. US scientist Katherine Grabek found that when the thirteen-lined ground squirrel hibernates, it cleans out harmful brain plaques that are related to Alzheimer’s in humans. They hope to design some medicine for humans based on this finding. Besides, some studies in bats show that, during hibernation, their bodies age more slowly. This also provides new ideas for making humans live longer in the future, according to New Scientist magazine.
At the same time, scientists have found a lot of fun facts on animals. For example, a bat’s heart rate drops to 25 beats per minute during hibernation—down from 400 when it’s awake. Its breathing slows so much that it might not take a breath for up to an hour! Also, a black bear can go without eating, drinking or going to the bathroom for 100 days. During hibernation, their wounds even heal perfectly.
