I Remember
Looking back at these past three years
Preparing for art festivals
I remember many things
And making a great big mess
Tying to be on time for morning readings
Have fun at New Year’s parties
3 when the lunch bell rings
Wishing everyone the best
I remember the excitement
We have learned a different language
Of the school sports day each year
That is from a foreign land
The many long hours of training
English brings many challenges
Pride of overcoming fear
We work hard to understand
I remember starting day one
And now it’s time to graduate
The shyest in my whole class
We will leave our lovely school
Never speaking to anyone
I can’t believe it has been three years
And thinking I would not pass
I’m trying to keep my cool
Then slowly I made some new friends
But it’s difficult not to cry
To remember forever
I’ll miss the school trees and flowers
Helping each other with homework
And our kind and caring teachers
Getting better together
Wonderful memories of ours

Anne had been at Green Gables two weeks before Mrs. Rachel Lynde came to see what she was like.

“I hate you,” cried Anne. “I hate you! I hate you!” “What a temper!” cried Mrs. Lynde.
“Anne, go to your room and stay there until I come up,” said Marilla. Anne ran to her room, crying.
Afterward, Marilla went upstairs to talk to Anne.
“Mrs. Lynde had no right to call me ugly and red-headed,” Anne cried.

“No,” Anne said. “I’m not sorry.”
The next morning, Matthew went to Anne’s room. “I think you should apologize to Mrs. Lynde,” he said. “Will you do that for me ”
Anne thought about this. She liked Matthew. She thought he was kind. “All right,” she said. “I’ll apologize.”
“Good girl,” Matthew said.

“Please, Mrs. Lynde, forgive me for being so rude to you yesterday. I am so very sorry. Can you find it in your heart ever to forgive me ”

On a cold night in New York, a policeman was on duty. He walked along a quiet street and checked the locked doors of shops that had closed for the night. His work stopped when he came upon a man who was standing near the entrance of a store.
“It’s all right, officer,” the man said. “I’m just waiting for a friend.” He explained that he and his friend had eaten dinner at his shop exactly 20 years before. Back then, it was a restaurant. The policeman told him that “Big Joe”, Brady’s restaurant had closed down five years ago.
The man lit his cigar (雪茄). The light showed a pale face with keen eyes, and a little white scar (疤痕) near his eyebrow. He continued to talk about his good friend Jimmy Wells and how they were like brothers. The day after their dinner, the man had gone to the west to become rich, but Jimmy had stayed behind in New York. They hadn’t seen each other since then but had agreed to meet at the same restaurant on this very night.
“I’ll be on my way,” the policeman said. “Hope your friend comes around all right.” He said good night to the man and continued walking down the street.
Around 20 minutes later, another man arrived. “Is that you, Bob ” the mysterious man asked. “Is that you, Jimmy Wells ” Bob responded (回应). Bob was happy to be looking at his old friend again. However, he couldn’t help but notice that Jimmy seemed much taller. “I grew a bit after I was 20,” Jimmy said.
They started walking. When they stepped under the light of a shop, Bob realized that the man’s nose was completely different from his friend’s, so he couldn’t be Jimmy. The man then explained, “You have been under arrest (逮捕) for 10 minutes and before we go on to the station, here’s a note I was asked to hand you.”
Bob, I was at the place on time. I saw the face of the man that was wanted by the police. I didn’t want to arrest you myself. So I went and got another policeman and sent him to do the job.

The men then took his mother by the rope and led her. He didn’t like this; it was like a trap. He followed them. They went down to the river, and made a camp. White Fang was amazed by what he saw the men do. They were the masters of things not alive. Their tent were especially strange and big to him.
White Fang explored the camp. He met a puppy, who was older than him, called Lip-lip. White Fang wanted to be friendly, but Lip-lip suddenly attacked him. They became enemies. White Fang’s mother wanted him to stay with her, but White Fang was curious and soon he was exploring again.
Gray Beaver was doing something important with two sticks and some grass. Women and children carried sticks and branches to him. White Fang saw something like mist (雾状物) coming from the sticks and branches, and then, something bright like the sun appeared, and grew.
White Fang went towards this bright thing with his nose, and touched it with his tongue. Then he jumped into the air, yelping. Gray Beaver laughed, and told everybody, so they all started laughing, too. Kiche started snarling loudly, but she could not get to her cub because of the rope. Poor White Fang sat there crying in the middle of the laughing men. Their laughter hurt him more than the pain.
He went back to his mother and lay down beside her. As night came on he felt sad. He missed the woods and the cave. Here, there were so many people making noise, and all the dogs. The men were always doing something, using their power. They were gods!

Happy Rain on a Spring Night Good rain knows its time right; It will fall when comes spring. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistens each thing. O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads; In boat a lantern looms. Dawn sees saturated reds; The town’s heavy with blooms. —Translated by Xu Yuanchong Du Fu
This famous poem, with four couplets, was written by Du Fu when he was living and farming in Chengdu. His farming experience taught him to be thankful to nature.
Du Fu(7128770) The famous poem in Tang Dynasty. He was called Poet-sage by people.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the proper time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人法), as if the rain were smart enough to come in time for the farmers’ busy season. When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the spring rain finishes its task without being known.
In the third couplet, the poet describes a peaceful scene to us. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit livelier.
Lastly, the poet starts to imagine. Tomorrow morning, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful when all of the flowers bloom (盛开) after the rain.

It was a summer evening. Nine-year-old Sylvie went through the forest to the home she loved with her grandma’s cow as usual. On the way, she began thinking about the noisy dirty factory town where her parents still lived. One year ago, she lived with them there.
Suddenly the air was cut by a sharp. Sylvie knew it was not a friendly bird’s whistle. It was from a young man. “Hello,” he called out cheerfully. “I’ve been hunting for birds but I’ve lost my way. Can I spend the night at your house ” Sylvie didn’t answer. She was glad she was almost home.
When they reached her farm house, the stranger put down his gun and explained his problem to Sylvie’s grandma. “Certainly you can stay here.” She said kindly and gave him a plate.
While eating, the man explained he was a scientist who collected birds. “Do you put them in cages ” Sylvie asked. “No, I shoot them and fill them with special chemicals to preserve them so that they look as if they are alive. I have over 100 different kinds of birds in my study.”
“Sylvie knows a lot about birds too,” her grandma said proudly. “She knows the forest so well. The wild animals come and eat bread right out of her hands.”
“So have you ever seem a tall strange bird with soft white feathers and long thin legs ” the man asked Sylvie excitedly. “It is a very rare bird, the little white heron. I will give $10 to the person who shows me where the heron is.”
Sylvie’s heart began beating fast. She knew that strange bird! She had seen it on the other side of the forest. That night Sylvie’s dreams were full of all the wonderful things she and her grandma could buy for $10.
Sylvie spent the next day in the forest with the man. He told her a lot about the birds. Sylvie would have had a much better time if he did not take his gun. She could not understand why he killed the birds he seemed to like so much. She felt her heart tremble every time he shot a bird as it was singing in the tree.
At last evening came. They drove the cow home together. Long after the moon came out, Sylvie was still awake, thinking what to do.

(The next morning, Robinson Crusoe swam out to the ship again.)
There were still many things on board of it that might be useful to me in my island home. I wished to save all that I could. I climbed up the ship’s side just as I had done the day before.
Before looking for anything, I made another raft(筏子), just like the first one, but smaller. In the captain’s room I found six or seven guns, ①which I had overlooked before, and another keg(小桶) of powder. Then I gathered up as many clothes as I could find. The raft was now quite full. The things were not heavy, but they made a large pile.
When the tide turned for the shore, I was soon floating homeward. I had found a good oar (浆) in the ship. I had no trouble in guiding the raft to the right landing place.
②I looked to see if the goods were safe which I had brought over the day before. There, on one of my boxes, I saw a strange animal sitting. She looked like a wild cat. As I went toward her, she jumped down and ran a little way. Then she stood still. I had a few biscuits in my pocket. I now tossed one toward to her. “Take this and be gone,” I shouted.
Biscuits were not so many that I could well spare any. But I spared the poor animal this little bit. She smelled of it and ate it. Then she looked up for more.
“Thank you, I have no more to give you,” I said.
Whether she understood me, I do not know. But with that, she turned and ran away.

Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent Fowler had ever read about. He was fat. Very fat. Following him to the hotel room where Ausable lived, Fowler felt let down. It was a small room, on the sixth and top floor.
“You are disappointed,” Ausable said to Fowler. “As a writer, you wished to have mysterious adventures with me in the night. Instead, you have spent a dull evening with a fat man.” He unlocked the door and let his guest enter.
“But take cheer.” Ausable continued, “Presently you will see a quite important paper for which several people have risked their lives, come to me before its last journey into official hands.” As he spoke, Ausable closed the door and then turned on the light.
As the light came on, for halfway across the room, a pistol in his hand, stood a thin man.
“Max,” Ausable wheezed, “You gave me quite a start. What are you doing in my room ”
“The paper,” Max murmured. “The paper about some new missiles, I thought it would be safer in my hands than in yours.”
Ausable sat down in an armchair and complained, “This is the second time in a month that somebody has gotten into my room off that balcony!” Fowler’s eyes went to the single window of the room.
“Balcony ” Max puzzled. “I did not know about the balcony.”
“It’s not my balcony,” explained Ausable angrily. “The next apartment had the balcony, which extends under my window now. You can get onto it from the empty room next door, and somebody did, last month.”
The little spy shouted. “Don’t crap. I will get back the paper tonight. Who is at the door ”
Fowler jumped at the sudden knocking at the door. Ausable just smiled, “That will be the police. I thought that such an important paper should have a little extra protection.”
Max bit his lip nervously. With his hand behind him, he opened the window and put his leg out into the night. He warned. “I will wait on the balcony. Send them away or I’ll shoot and take my chances!”
The doorknob turned. Quickly Max dropped to the balcony, screaming once, shrilly.
The door opened and a waiter stood there with the drink. White-faced and shaking, Fowler stared after him. “But… but...” he stammered, “The police…”
“There were no police.” Ausable sighed. “Only the waiter, whom I was expecting.”
“But that man out on the balcony… ” Fowler began.
“No,” said Ausable, “He won’t return.”
