There are many useful inventions in the world.
Have you ever wished to have an umbrella that makes your
hands free Alan Kaufman has thought up the “Nubrella”, which
means “new” + “umbrella”. It is the first truly hands-free umbrella in
the world. The inventor says that it stops rain, wind and snow and can
keep your head, face and hair dry.
“I never planned to invent a product. I just noticed a problem and
thought up a way to solve it,” said the inventor. The idea for the invention began on one
rainy day. Mr. Kaufman was standing in one of his stores. He began to look at people’s
umbrellas. He found that they had to try very hard to keep their umbrellas in the right place.
At that moment an idea came into his mind. He ran to his desk and drew a picture. In this

way, the Nubrella was born.
One cool feature (特点) of the Nubrella is that you don’t hold it like a usual umbrella,
but you wear it. The shoulder straps (肩 带 ) of the Nubrella allow people to be fully
hands-free, so when walking in the rain with the Nubrella, you are able to use your cell
phone or drink a hot cup of coffee. Also, the Nubrella will never be inverted (颠倒 ) in the
wind. The new umbrella is far safer than traditional ones, because it has no sharp points.

A. A traditional umbrella. B. A hands-free umbrella. C. A paper umbrella.
45. How can we use the Nubrella
A. We can wear the shoulder straps of the Nubrella.
B. We can put the Nubrella on our bike.
C. We must use our hands to control it.
46. What do we know from the passage

A. To respect a great inventor named Alan Kaufman.
B. To introduce a new invention that is very useful.
C. To sell a new kind of umbrella to umbrella sellers.

Now, primary students learn cooking at school. It has been discussed by teachers and parents.
Some think that it is a useful skill for students, while others think it’s a waste of time, some even
think it’s just a show. But do they really understand cooking
It’s been said that good cooking is an art form. The truth is that it’s much more than that. Then
talking about different foods from all around the world, or cultures and histories of dishes, students
are connected to the world and learning history and culture in a new field. Then learning cooking,
students measure (称量 ) materials from time to time, or find oil and water don’t usually mix.
Students are also learning maths and science in practice.
The importance of failures in making food is as much as successes. Li Mei, 11, was crazy about
the yummy cakes made by her father and wanted to make one on her own. But when taking her cake
out, she was frustrated (沮丧的) to find that the cake was hard and black at the bottom. Her father
told her when he was 13, he tried to make cakes, but wasted boxes of eggs. Then together with father,
Li Mei found out what had gone wrong and succeeded in making one. Li Mei learned in the failure
of cooking, and could be braver to face failures.
Apart from the practical skills, cooking builds character. It encourages kids to work with others.
It also encourages them to be open to foods they might not have tried. Though being good to our
health, carrots were hated by 12-year-old Xiao Lei. But he started to love them after he made a salad

with them. By cooking, students put down their phones and work together with family members in
the kitchen. By cooking, students form the habit of doing labor work. As a part of labor education,
cooking is a way to teach kids vital 21st century skills, such as creativity, teamwork and so on. If
these skills aren’t taught to today’s students, they might hardly survive in the future.

A. Failure is as important as success.
B. There is no failure without success.
C. Cooking is sure to be failure at last.

There are some traditional art forms in China. Paper cutting is one of them.
Traditional paper cuttings were first put on windows for decoration (装饰 ). This is why
they’re called “window flowers”. Today, people use paper cuttings to decorate not only windows,
but also doors, walls and other objects at home. The paper cuttings themselves can also be given
as gifts.
Paper cuttings are popular because of their expressions of good luck and wishes. During
the Spring Festival, for example, many people put up paper cuttings of Chinese character “Fu”.
They hope that this will bring them good luck. At wedding ceremonies (婚礼),you can always
see paper cuttings of character “Xi”. It means that the couple can enjoy double happiness
together. And paper cuttings of lively children or flowers express wishes for the couple to have a
baby soon.
Paper cuttings have developed into different styles in different places of China. Paper
cuttings from the northern places usually have interesting shapes and rich patterns. In Southern
China, people prefer beautiful paper cuttings. They focus more on the flowers, fruit, birds and

or a pair of scissors, you can try to make your own paper cut. You can only make one piece at a
time by using knife. But if you use scissors to cut several pieces of paper together, you can make
several same paper cuttings at once. Although paper cuttings are easy to start with, one needs a
lot of practice and imagination to become really good at them.

58. Do you want to learn paper cuttings Why
59. What do you need to make paper cuttings better

70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. However, only 3% of the water is fit for
human use, and the rest is frozen or salty. According to a report by WWF, water shortage (短缺)
influences nearly 27% of the world’s population.
Many reasons cause water shortage. The first is climate (气候) change. The heat caused by
climate change leads to water drying out. The next is water pollution, which makes the limited
water unsafe for using. What’s more, the human population has more than doubled, and today

41% of world’s population is badly in need of water.
So what are the results of water shortage Firstly, people lack enough water to drink. Water
shortage brings about hunger. Plants can not grow when there is not enough water. As a result,
there is less food for people.
Therefore, it’s time to take action. Here are three ways for us to save water in daily life.
First, take shorter showers. Save a minute or two of your shower time. Millions of people doing
even the little things makes a difference. Second, if you forget to turn off a tap, all those wasted
drops add up— sometimes 5,300 liters of water a year. Third, reuse water. Collect water after
washing vegetables and pour it on your plants.
