The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气). The year starts from Beginning of Spring and ends with Greater Cold, moving in cycles. The solar term culture is still useful today to guide people’s lives through special foods, cultural ceremonies and even healthy living tips.
Grain Buds (小满) is the 8th solar term of the year. It means that the seeds (种子) from the grain are becoming full. During Grain Buds, the summer harvest is about to begin. A saying about rain during this time mentions, “Heavy rainfall makes the river full.” Because of the great increase in rainfall, rivers are full of water. This is a good time to enjoy fish. It is also a harvest season for fishermen.
Frost’s Descent (霜降), the 18th solar term of the year, is the last solar term of autumn. The weather becomes much colder than before and frost begins. The apple is one kind of recommended fruit during Frost’s Descent. There are many sayings about apples’ benefits (益处) in China, such as “ Eat an apple after meals. Even old men can be as strong as young men.”
Minor Cold (小寒) is the 23rd one. For most areas of China, it marks the start of the coldest days of the year and people always start preparing for Chinese New Year. According to traditional Chinese medicine thoughts, people need to eat food that has more yang energy to prevent cold from harming their bodies. Another important traditional food for Minor Cold is Laba porridge (腊八粥).

For many English learners learning to write fluently in English is much more challenging than learning to speak fluently. Even for advanced level learners, written communications can come much more slowly in English than spoken communications.
Writing in English needs to follow rules of grammar much more closely than in spoken English. For example, if someone says ‘Please borrow me your pen’ in conversation, it’s clear from the context that the speaker intended to say ‘Please lend me your pen’. In written communication, words are even more important because they lack visual context. Especially if you are working in a business setting, making mistakes can cause miscommunication which might lead to problems. In conversation, you can smile and make a good impression. With writing, all you have are your words.
Imagine if you’re at a party. You might have a conversation with someone and only understand a few words. However, because you’re in the context of a party, you can make all the mistakes you want. It doesn’t matter. Everyone is having fun. When it comes to writing, there’s not so much room for error.
Spoken English is much more spontaneous (自发的) than written English. It’s looser and mistakes don’t necessarily impact your ability to communicate clearly. In writing, it’s important to think about how to write to the intended audience. You need to understand who will be reading your writing. It takes time to figure these things out.
We expect more of what we read. We expect it to be true, entertaining or informative. When there’s an expectation, there’s pressure to perform well. With speaking, with the possible exception of giving a presentation, there’s not nearly so much pressure-unless you’re closing a business deal.
It is important when teaching written English skills - especially for business English - to be aware of the challenges that learners will face when learning to function in a written English environment.
8.According to the second paragraph, why are words more important in written communication
A.Because writers can only rely on words.
B.Because grammar only applies to writing.
C.Because written words are more expressive.
D.Because written English involves little visual effect.
9.In which situation is a person expected to have the most pressure
A.When taking part in parties. B.When giving a presentation
C.When having a talk with friends. D.When hanging out with business partners.
10.What will the author probably continue to write after the last paragraph
A.Tips on how to teach English writing skills.
B.Functions of writing skills in business English.
C.Difference between spoken and written English.
D.Challenges people will meet in making business.
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.Why Is It Easy to Speak Fluently
B.What Contributes to a Good Writing
C.How Can a Person Improve His Writing
D.Why Is Writing More Difficult than Speaking
D
Some big scientific discoveries aren’t actually discovered but borrowed. That’s what happened when scientists discovered proteins from an unlikely lender: green algae(绿藻), whose cells are decorated with proteins that can sense light.
The light-sensing protein promised the power to control neurons(神经元)by providing a way to turn them on and off. Such ability, first noticed in 2002, quickly caught the attention of brain scientists: Nerve cells which were genetically engineered to produce such proteins become light-controlled. A flash of light could cause a quiet neuron to send signals or force an active neuron to fall silent. “This is the light sensor that we needed,” says Zhuo-Hua Pan, a scientist searching for a way to control vision cells in mice’s eyes. The method is now called optogenetics (光遗传学).
In Pan’s lab, light-responsive proteins restored vision in mice with damaged eyesight, a finding that has now led to a medical test on people. Optogenetics’ promise wasn’t clear in early days, as scientists were first learning how to use these proteins in neurons. “At that time, no one expected that this optogenetic work would have such a huge impact,” Pan says.
The algae’s light sensors have been adopted for use in countless brain research fields. Talia, another scientist, uses optogenetics to study connections between cells in the mouse brain. The method allows her to comb the relationships between cells that produce and respond to dopamine(多巴胺), which might help uncover details about motivation and learning.
So far, optogenetics research has taken place mostly in mice. But findings into more complex brains like human brain may soon be confirmed. “We are definitely on the tip of uncovering some fascinating principles of the human brain, such as how the brain transforms signals from the eyes into perceptions,” says Yasmine of Columbia University.
No matter what happens next in this swiftly moving field, one thing is certain: Brain scientists will be forever in the algae’s debt.
12.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The origin of neurons. B.The discovery of green algae.
C.The varieties of neurons. D.The inspiration from green algae.
13.What can we learn from Pan’s research
A.Damaged eyesight is likely to be restored.
B.The findings are used to cure brain diseases.
C.Relationships between cells have been found.
D.The light-sensing protein is the key to the brain.
14.What’s Yasmine’s attitude towards the future of her research
A.Cautious. B.Confident. C.Critical. D.Unclear.
15.Which section is this text most probably taken from
A.Health. B.Botany. C.Figure. D.Invention.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that the summer vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things:new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. 16

18 However, it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to students you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad about what you did, and so will your new friends!
19 You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T shirt in one of your vacations, or a pair of shoes. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. 20
A.But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.
B.Going to a new school for kids can make them excited as well as nervous.
C.You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day.
D.Making friends requires enthusiasm and patience.
E.Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
F.The new schoolday always means a lot to us.

When Ryan first turned up for Ms. Rose’s class, he was kind of nervous because he’d heard Ms. Rose could be a real monster sometimes. But as Ms. Rose started with an overview of what they’d be doing during the year in a pleasant voice, she looked nice enough. Then with a more serious tone, she warned the students that she’d be giving them homework assignments, which were not to be handed in late, and they were to be completed fully. “No excuses! No extensions! ”
That day she assigned the class its first homework. They had to do a sheet of math problems and read a short story. It wasn’t due until Thursday, but she suggested they do it immediately that night. “Homework has a way of piling up,” she said, with her eyes narrowing slightly. But today was only Monday! There was plenty of time, Ryan thought.
So when school was over, Ryan and his friends ran off to play baseball. Exhausted after the game, he entertained himself with his favorite TV show, leaving his homework aside on his desk. Days passed quickly. Ryan was free of worries most of the time, while Ms. Rose just occasionally reminded them of the deadline, and that she wouldn’t tolerate anyone not having done it.
On Wednesday, after dinner, he suddenly realized that his homework was due the next day. He raced to his desk and was greeted with the most curious thing. The pile of homework really had grown taller. Oh no! What was he going to do It looked as if the papers had towered over him, almost soaring up to the ceiling.
He really needed to get started. He did a little bit here and there, but he kept getting distracted by other work waiting for him. Finally, he couldn’t even locate the homework he’d started with. Frustrated, he gave up and went to bed. Ryan tossed and turned all night and had bad dreams of paper mountains burying him alive.
The next morning, when Ryan entered the classroom, he found Ms. Rose waiting, with her face dark with rage. Obviously, Ryan wasn’t the only one who suffered from the mysteriously growing assignments.
Paragraph 1:
Failing to meet the deadline, the students had to watch Ms. Rose transform into a real monster.

46.Dear Jack,
I am glad to receive your letter. With the summer vacation drawing near, I want to share my ideas about how to live a rich and meaningful holiday.
First of all, since good health is the basic of our study and work, you can take exercise for at least an hour daily, which will help you build up your strength. What’s more, you need to develop a good habit of study in preparation for the coming year. Meanwhile, you should read at least 8 good books, which I think can help you gain more knowledge and broaden your horizon.
I do believe you will have a meaningful summer vacation.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
47.Paragraph 1:
Failing to meet the deadline, the students had to watch Ms. Rose transform into a real monster. She snapped her finger and then all the students could not move. She snapped again so that all the homework was opened in front of the students. Seeing the surprised expression of the students, she said s owly, “Only when you have finished the homework will I let you go. Otherwise, the homework will pile up more and more, and you will always have an opportunity to stay in the classroom.” Hearing this, Ryan and his classmates were alarmed but focused on their homework soon. Fortunately, over time, they completely finished their homework and handed it in.
Paragraph 2:
With a satisfied smile, Ms. Rose finally released everyone, but assigned the class some extra homework. She changed from the monster to the teacher Ms. Rose. She reminded the students when it was due again. But this time, no one wanted to put his homework off. This time, Ryan and his classmates had not only completed all their assignments on time but had also excelled academically. They had learned the importance of time management, perseverance, and the value of hard work. Ms. Rose's tough love approach had transformed them into responsible and motivated students.
