I was scared when a loud noise in my apartment woke me in the middle of the night. I rushed to turn on my bedroom light and discovered it was a cat. Here’s the thing — I do not have a cat. And this was not the first time this particular cat had demanded my attention. I immediately calmed down and realized my mistake — I had left a window open. I approached my house guest to entertain her by giving her some treats and scratches under her collar.
Just like many others, I shifted from working in an office to working from home. Living alone can be separate from outside at the best of times. It was around the one-month mark of the lockdown when I heard a meow outside my window. Sitting outside on the grass was a long-haired, golden-colored cat. I opened the window, and this beautiful cat jumped into my home. Her short visit lifted my spirits for the day.
A few days later, I heard a familiar meow. I saw a name tag on her collar: Mika. On this second visit, I also noticed Mika was cross-eyed, which only made her more lovely.
Over the next few weeks, Mika would drop by occasionally. Sometimes, she only stayed for a few minutes; other times, she would wander around my apartment much longer. Each visit cheered me up. Mika even served as my social bridge, helping me connect with some new neighbors, who, as it turns out, had also received visits from her.
While the lockdown has been awful, I doubt I might not have ever met Mika if it had not happened. But perhaps she came by at this time because she sensed a need for connection on my part.
While dogs are said to be man’s best friend, a good cat can be everyone’s best friend.

We’ve all been told that different types of fruits and vegetables have different benefits that help us keep healthy. A new international study has found that eating one fruit regularly can help reduce the risk of cancer, among those people who have a high risk of developing certain cancers.
The research, which followed almost 1, 000 patients with a variety of cancers, found that taking regular resistant starch could have a great preventative effect on the risk of cancer. Here’s what you need to know about how eating bananas regularly can help reduce the risk of cancers.
Resistant starch is found in green bananas. By eating green bananas your body gets resistant starch, which has been found to reduce the risk of cancers in some parts of the body by more than a half, according to the new research. The study, which was published in Cancer Prevention Research, was led by experts at the Universities of Newcastle and Leeds. It found that resistant starch, if taken regularly for two years, had a very good effect on some cancers, which can be difficult to find.
John Mathers, a professor at Newcastle University explained, “Resistant starch really helps in fact, which has several health benefits and fewer calories than regular starch.”
In addition to green bananas, resistant starch is also found in foods such as peas, beans and other starchy foods. In terms of bananas, experts think that eating one banana every day has the same effect as a certain amount of resistant starch. The secret is to eat the bananas before they become too ripe or soft.
46. What advantage does eating bananas regularly have
A. Have a lower risk of cancer.
B. Avoid developing diseases.
C. Suffer from no stress.
D. Expect a longer life.

阅读下列短文并回答问题。
When I was a high school student, maths looked like a big mountain for me and several of my classmates. Mr Iyer, a strict maths teacher, was also our class teacher. He always stuck to his rules. We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and we dared not to ignore any of his homework.
Even so, as our class teacher, we got to know him better. Noticing some of us couldn’t sit still and seemed restless one day as the mid-term exams approached, he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why. “There’s too much to do,”we sighed. “We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exam. ”“Nothing is impossible. ”Mr. Iyer told us. “This classroom is on the second floor. Do you have a problem reaching here ”We reacted with blank stares.
“No, you don’t!” he said, answering his own question. “You’ve got stairs to aid your climb. No one expects you to make it in two giant jumps. You just take it step by step. If you stick with it, everything else will work out. Remember, taking it one step at a time, that’s the key.” Then he wrote down an old saying on the blackboard—the longest journey starts with a single step. After hearing this, we finally understood his point, seeing him under a new light.”
Most of my classmates achieved excellent grades in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr Iyer’s invaluable advice to my own students, they become hopeful at the prospect of a lighter academic burden

Even so as our class teacher, we got to know him better.
