Jatto’s mother was doing housework while Jatto was reading a book aloud in English. Jatto didn’t always like 1 to his mother. She spoke only Esan, one of the languages in Nigeria. Wasn’t it a waste of time to read to someone who couldn’t understand His mother didn’t even realize when he made 2 . Still, she insisted he read aloud every day.
“Let’s bottle nuts when you finish reading,” she said in Esan.
Jatto shook his head. He had so much homework to do. “I’ll never finish reading.”
Jatto said “never” in English because there was no word for never in Esan.
“What’s ‘never’ ” she asked.
Jatto cleared his throat to 3 the English word. “It means I won’t stop reading today, tomorrow, or 4 .” He drew circles in the air. “Nor the day after the day after tomorrow, the day after the day after, the day after …”
“Oh, OK! That’s forever,” his mother said.
Jatto stared at the nuts. Each one looked delicious.
Now would be a 5 time to eat some. But he couldn’t ask. He remembered the 6 he’d drawn in the air.
Jatto’s mother whistled. Tam-tam, their cow, came up to them. Jatto could 7 cow-milk air as his mother milked her. Tam-tam’s milk was the best he’d ever tasted.
Jatto needed to take his mind off the 8 . “Mama, why do you make me read to you even though you don’t understand ”
“I want you to practice speaking English often,” she said.
“I can practice English in my head,” he said, not 9 .
His mother smiled. “We share our stories aloud with others, not in our heads where 10 can hear them.”
Jatto nodded. He’d learned about that in school.
She decided to tell him a story and handed him some nuts and milk. “You can eat 11 I talk.”
He ate as she started. Soon, Jatto was singing the story with his mother.
“You never tell me stories,” he said when they stopped 12 .
She sighed. “I used to, but when you started school, I wanted you to focus on English.”
“I make a lot of mistakes when I read to you,” Jatto said.
His mother 13 . “I guessed so. But I like hearing the sound of your voice while I work.”
Jatto knew what she meant. He had enjoyed listening to her story as he bottled the nuts. It made the work seem 14 . “I have an idea,” he said. “Next time, I will read a story to you in English, then I will tell you the same story in Esan. We can even make up songs together.”
“Great! And I will tell you stories in Esan and you can say them back to me in English. Let’s ‘never’ stop 15 stories.”
Jatto smiled. His mother’s understanding of never was even better than his own.

Once I took a vacation in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a full view of the blue sea, white buildings and green trees, I stopped to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo.
Unluckily, just as I took out my camera, a woman came from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, she was there to appreciate the view.
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and looking at the shot I would finally take, I grew angry. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so lost in her world. I didn’t want to mess with that.
Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I looked at it, I found her figure (身影) in the photo was what made the photo interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow came to life because of her.
The photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined (破坏)” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure was once captured (捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall Perhaps we all live in each other’s private space. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.
That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.
What happened when the writer took out her camera
A.A friend got close from behind. B.Someone asked her to leave.
C.A woman was in front of her view. D.Her camera stopped working.
2. According to the writer, the woman was ________.
A.losing her patience B.enjoying the landscape
C.thinking about the past D.waiting for the sunset
3. In the writer’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive
A.The perfect position of the camera. B.The beautiful landscape.
C.The soft sunlight on that summer day. D.The woman in the photo.
4. The photo makes the writer have a better understanding of ________.
A.the importance of private space B.the beauty of the unexpected
C.the meaning of life D.the need to make friends
5. The passage is mainly about the writer’s ________.
A.unforgettable friendship B.memory of climbing a hill
C.art of taking photos D.thoughts on an experience

What happens when you flush a toilet on a plane The toilets in our homes use gravity to clear the waste into the sewer system (下水道系统), but the toilet on a plane is different. It uses a vacuum (真空) system and a blue chemical. 1 The vacuum system works like a vacuum cleaner. A vacuum cleaner sucks dust (吸灰尘) from the floor into a container. 2
After the plane lands, a waste truck carries away the plane’s toilet waste. 3 Sometimes, especially on older planes, as small amount of the waste and blue chemical may leak (泄露) from the connection between the truck and the plane. The next time the plane flies high up in the sky, the air there is very cold. 4 Once the plane begins to land, the blue ice begins to melt and may even fall off. According to news reports, people in different places have seen this flying blue ice.
5 Although it is not common, accidents of falling blue ice have been reported to cause damage to vehicles, buildings, and even hurt people. As a result, strict rules have been set to ensure the air waste is dealt with safely.
(
A.The flying blue ice could bring dangers to people and things on the ground.
B.It ends up in the airport’s sewer system.
C.In the same way, the plane toilet sucks all the waste into a large container.

Some people think they know everything, Alfred the Spider didn’t think that. He knew that to have real wisdom, he had to learn more.
One day, Alfred found an empty basket and he had an idea. “If I get advice from others and put it in this basket, then I’ll be wiser than anyone else in the world.”
So, he went from house to house and asked the other creatures, “What’s your best piece of advice ”
The worm said, “You should never judge people by their looks. Under an ugly coat, there’s often a beautiful heart.”
The snail said, “Don’t be in a hurry. Life isn’t a 100-meter race.”
The ant said, “You’ll never be great on your own. Everyone needs the help of others.”
The fly said, “Work for eight hours, sleep for eight hours, and play for eight hours.”
Alfred was happy with the advice he got. He thought, “I have more wisdom now but I must hide it, so no one can steal it.” He looked around and saw a hole high up in the tree. “That’s where I’ll hide the wisdom,” he said.
But the basket was so big that Alfred could hardly climb the tree. His son was nearby watching him. “Daddy, why not tie the basket to your back to climb the tree ” “Cool. Thank you for sharing your advice,” said Alfred, and at that moment he realized that advice is only useful when we share it with someone.

The good story in my heart
A good story can travel in time and space. During the three years of junior high school, I have read lots of stories. Now I want to tell you something about the good story in my heart—the story of Mencius’ Mother Moving Three Times.
When Mencius was a little boy, he learned how to mourn in the place where they lived at first. His mother thought it was not good for his study, so she decided to move. Then, they moved to a place next to a market, and Mencius began to learn the ways of business people. His mother didn’t want him to be a businessman, so they moved again. Finally, they moved into a house near a school. Mencius began to learn knowledge. His mother thought this was right place for him to grow up.
I think it is an educational and meaningful story. Through this story I know the importance of the environment. It can make a big difference to us.
