At present, scientists use modern ways to get information to tell us what the weather will be like. They make predictions(预测)about the weather for today, tomorrow and even for the whole season.
But what did people do before modern technology Well, not so long ago, people lived much closer to nature. People made predictions about the weather by watching what was happening in the insect world. Sometimes their predictions were correct, and sometimes they weren’t.
My grandfather spent his whole life as a farmer in Canada. He is long gone now. But I still remember his stories about how to predict the weather. For example, in summer, he would often stop to watch the anthills—those piles of earth in front of the ants’ homes.
“Look closely at the anthills in July, ” Grandpa said. “If the anthills are high in July, a snowy winter may arrive.” Of course, as a kid, I believed my grandfather. But you know what The antills are often correct. Not always, but often enough to make me a believer.
In September, Grandpa would often point out a woolly caterpillar(毛毛虫)on a sunny day, “Watch the orange circle around its belly(腹部). If it’s wide and full, we’re sure to have a warm and easy winter. If it’s thin, be careful! The winter will be severe.”
I am older now. I get my weather mostly from the television or radio. But I still stop to watch the anthills in July, and of course, the woolly caterpillars in September. Older people can teach us many things. My grandfather was not a scientist, but he knew a lot about insects and the weather.

Little birds talk with their sisters and brothers in their nest. They make a sound for food. Mum tells them to be quiet when danger comes. But now a new study finds that kind of talk begins long before the babies are born. Even in the eggs, they can talk with each other and know when to get out or when to keep waiting.
To check that finding, a team of scientists from Spain watched unborn birds carefully in Salvora Island. Over there, sea birds produce eggs and minks eat baby birds. So it is quite a dangerous place for baby birds. Knowing when to come out of the egg is a matter of life and death.
Scientists collected sea bird eggs and put them into two groups. When minks come, a parent will give warning calls to the baby birds. Scientists played those calls for one group. While the other group stayed in a safe box. They would never hear such calls.
When scientists put all the eggs together, they found something surprising: after receiving warning calls, the eggs vibrated more than the others. Those vibrations moved from one egg to another. It was just like there were ears in the eggs. It was clear that unborn birds talked with their sisters and brothers about danger.

Lighting is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena(现象). It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface(表面)of the Sun and gives out 30,000 amps of electricity(电). It can travel at 100, 000 kilometres per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40 kilometres away. About 1, 000 people around the world are killed by lightning every day.
Only about ten percent of people struck by lightening will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured, with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brain, it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects. Some blind people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence (智力)had greatly improved, and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below freezing in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing, or water. If you are stuck outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do not think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.
Strangely, lightning seems to prefer some people to others. If you are a man, you are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!
