The need for something that can solve the problem in our daily lives often leads to new and interesting
inventions. Here are some examples of inventions that were born as solutions to common daily problems.
Earle Dickson notices that his wife often burned (烫伤 ) or cut herself accidentally while working in the
kitchen. She would then need his help to put bandages on the wounds. Since Dickson couldn’t always be there to
help her, he invented a bandage that she could easily deal with herself. Sold under the brand name Band-Aid,
these bandages are now used for many kinds of small cut.
Then there was Bette Nesmith Graham, a secretary (秘书) who wanted a simple way to correct her typing
(打字) mistakes. One day, as she was watching painters use touch-up paint to a wall, it struck her that the same
way could be used on paper. She mixed a white paint and used a small brush to apply it to her work. This small
bottle of paint with brush finally came to be known as Liquid Paper.
In some cases, though, people invent things for one purpose but end up using them for another. Take tea bags,
for example. In 1908, a New York tea seller named Thomas Sullivan came up with the idea of creating small gifts
for customers by putting tea leaves in silk bags. Customers are supposed to take out the tea leaves from each bag

before boiling a pot (壶) of tea. However, some people misunderstand (误会 ) and began putting the unopened
bags directly into hot water, and the custom of using tea bag was born.
Sometimes inventions are used for their original purposes. Other times they end up being used for something
completely different. Either way, they make our lives better!
38. How many inventions are mentioned in the passage
A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5
39. How was the custom of using tea bags born
A. It was born from a misunderstanding.
B. It was born from a need to take out tea leaves.
C. It was born from a new creative idea to make tea.
D. It was born from a creative tea trade between countries.
40. The underlined word “original” in the last paragraph means _________.
A. living B. useless C. first D. opposite
41. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The invention of Band-Aids was a mistake.
B. Liquid Paper was invented by a secretary to solve her kitchen problem.
C. Liquid Paper invented by a secretary was used to correct typewriting.
D. Thomas Sullivan was the first person to sell tea in the United States.

In Hong Kong, most schools are very strict about what students wear to school. For example, they do not
allow students to wear any kind of accessories, such as necklaces or earrings. Some people think that small things,
like earrings, should be allowed at school. However, I feel that students should not be allowed to wear any kind of
accessories to school.
Firstly, if students are allowed to wear accessories to school, they will be less focused on their studies.
Instead of discussing schoolwork, they will spend time talking about accessories. For example, things like the
latest trends (潮流)or where to find them. Besides, if students are allowed to wear accessories to school, they will
probably spend a lot of time reading fashion (时尚) magazines and shopping. As a result, they will spend far less
time on homework and study.
Another reason why I think accessories should not be allowed in school is that they can be very costly. Even
if students choose not to buy designer accessories, they may still spend a lot of their pocket money (零花钱) on
them. This is because there are many types of accessories available and they would probably want several items of
each.
All in all, if students are allowed to wear accessories to school, it will distract (分散) them from their studies.
In addition, it will cost them a lot of money. So, I believe that students should not be allowed to wear accessories
to school.
42. Which of the following things are accessories
A. Rings B. Sweaters C. Shoes D. Uniforms
43. How do students probably get the information about new accessories
A. By discussing schoolwork with friends.
B. By talking with some designers online.

C. By reading fashion magazines and shopping.
D. By going to a school for only designers.
44. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To show different opinions about whether students can wear accessories to school.
B. To argue (论证) why he thinks students should not be allowed to wear accessories.
C. To describe what accessories students are wearing to school in Hong Kong these days.
D. To advise more and more students in Hong Kong to wear simple accessories to school.
45. What is the structure of this passage
