When I was small, my mum used to give the family something special for meals —she would make breakfast food for dinner.
I still remember one night my mum 1 some bread in front of my dad, something very burnt. I waited to see if anybody noticed. To my surprise, my dad just took his 2 , smiled at my mum and then turned to ask me how my day at school had been. I've 3 what I told him that night. 4 I do remember watching him put some butter on that bread. He 5 as usual, every single bit.
After dinner, my mum said 6 to my dad for burning the bread. And I never forget what he said, "I 7 burnt bread, dear. It doesn't matter at all. "
8 , I went to kiss Dad good light. I asked him if he really liked his bread burnt. He held me in arms and 9 , “Your mum worked very hard all day. She's really 10 . And you see—a bit of burnt food never hurt anyone!”
Now I know life is not perfect. 11 is perfect, either. As for me, I often forget birthdays or some other special days. But I've learned something 12 over these years. What we really need is the understanding of each other, whether between a husband and wife, a parent and _13_ or just between two friends. This is the key to a happy 14 .
So don't get 15 if the bread gets burnt. Remember burnt bread never hurt anyone. Be kind to those around you and a happier life will surely come closer to you.

①Can animals talk It is true that they are not able to use words like ours, but most of them can talk in their own way.
②When the cat is happy and pleased, how does she show it She purrs, and this is her way of saying. “I am quite happy now.” If she is unhappy, or in pain, or hungry, she mews. If she is angry, she sets up her back and moves her tail from side to side. If she is treated (对待)in a way she does not like, her tail goes straight up in the air, and she walks out of the room.
③If your dog is pleased, he puts back his ears, waves his tail, and seems to smile. If he is angry, he growls(咆哮), shows his teeth, puts up his tail and the hair along his back and neck, walks around slowly, and makes himself look very fierce. This is the dog’s way of saying. “I am mad, I have a mind to bite you.”
④When a hen sees a dog coming near her chickens, have you not noticed how she waves her wings, raises her tail, and rushes to the dog This is her way of saying. “Be off, or I will peck you with my hard beak(喙).” If she sees a hawk, she makes a strange noise, and her chickens at once run away and hide themselves. They understand their mother to say. “Quick, get out of sight, dears! There is danger near.” When she finds some nice food, she makes another kind of noise. The chickens know quite well what it means, and run at once to share the food their mother has found for them.

It was December and the snow was falling quietly outside. The four March sisters were sitting around the fire in the parlor. They were knitting socks for soldiers (士兵). There was a war and everyone had to help.
Meg was the oldest of the four sisters. She was sixteen. Jo was fifteen. Beth was thirteen. The youngest, Amy, looked like a snow princess with her blue eyes and blonde hair.
“Christmas isn’t Christmas without any presents,” Jo said sadly.
“I hate being poor!” Meg said, looking at her old dress.
“Some girls have lots of nice things, and other girls have nothing at all,” said Amy. “I don’t think it’s fair (公平).”
“But we’ve got Father and Mother, and each other,” said Beth.
The four sisters looked happy for a moment when they remembered this.
Then Jo said, “But we haven’t got Father.”
Their smiles suddenly disappeared. Mr March was far away with the soldiers.
“Mother says our men are suffering (遭受) and we mustn’t spend money for joy,” Meg said. “That’s why we can’t have presents this year.”
“Well, each of us has a dollar to spend,” said Jo. “What can the army do with four dollars Nothing! I don’t expect anything from Mother but I’d like to buy a book for myself.” Jo often read and she had a passion for books.
“I want to spend mine on some new music,” said Beth. She played the piano and she loved singing.
“I’m going to buy a box of drawing pencils. I really need them,” said Amy. She wanted to be an artist.
“Mother didn’t say anything about spending our own money,” cried Jo. “We work hard for it, so let’s buy what we want and have a little fun.”
.......
Just then the clock struck six. Beth got up and put her mother’s slippers near the fire to warm.
“Those slippers are very old,” said Jo, “Mother needs some new ones.”
“I can buy a pair for her with my dollar,” said Beth.
“No, it’s my job,” said Jo, “Father told me to take care of Mother while he was away.”
“I have an idea,” said Beth. “Let’s not spend our money on ourselves. Let’s get some presents for Mother.”
Her sisters thought that this was a very good idea.
