(2022上·江苏常州·九年级统考期末)You may have seen some great computer-animated (电脑动画的) films, like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, or Frozen. Computer animation is common in today’s world. But animation has been around for over 100 years. It has changed a lot over time. ________
Early animations were created by hand. At the beginning of the 1900s, Winsor McCay, who is considered the father of animation, worked alone and animated his films by himself. He drew every picture separately and had them photographed, one at a time. Hundreds of photographs were needed to make a one-minute film. It took him more than a year and 10, 000 drawings to create a five-minute animation called Gertie the Dinosaur. It was shown in theaters in 1914.
After celluloid (a special material) was developed, animation became easier. Instead of drawing each picture separately, the animator could make a drawing of the background. However, the background remained motionless, and only the characters moved.
Walt Disney took animation to a new level (水平). In 1928, he introduced the first Mickey Mouse cartoon. It was the first talking cartoon. Later, he added sound and music to his films and produced the first full-length animated film in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Toy Story, which came out in 1995, was the first computer-animated puter animation was also used for special effects in films such as Star Wars and Avatar. If you’ve seen Life of Pi, you may be surprised to learn that the tiger was done by animation. To create the illusion (错觉) of movement in these films, a picture was put on the computer and then quickly replaced (取代) by a similar picture with a small change. While this technique is similar to hand-drawn animation, the work can be done much faster on the computer.
These days, more and more interesting films are being created by computers. With the fast development of computer technology, what will animated films be like in the near future Let’s wait and see!

(2022上·江苏宿迁·九年级统考期末)In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (恶劣的) place on the Earth.
As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather.
Sleep is also difficult. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七级以上的) winds. They can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every comer of this icy land.
