The other day,Grandma got a phone call from a stranger who told her that she had won a prize, but she would need to send in some money in order to receive her winnings. Grandma immediately smelled a rat but played along.
She asked calmly for the name of the caller, the phone number and where to send her payment. He gave her some information and told Grandma she would be receiving a phone call the next day and that a FedEx employee would come to her house to collect the money.
After the phone call Grandma called the chief of police in her town and told him that she had got enough information to get them jailed. But the police chief told her there was nothing he could do and told Grandma just to ignore these bad people who were trying to take advantage of an elderly person. Grandma wasn't happy with this response. She decided to take matters into her own hands.
The next day, she got another call from the scammers(骗子), who told her to write out a check for several thousand dollars and wait at home for a FedEx employee to pick up the check late in the afternoon. True to their words, the FedEx employee arrived. Grandma was told that whatever he was picking up was to be sent away overnight and the payment, all based on weight, would be paid by the party that requested the pickup.
On hearing the information, a good idea hit Grandma and then she took out a pack of junk.
“Can I send all this stuff ”Grandma asked.
“Sure, you can,” the employee said. “I'll just need to get a big box.”
As the employee packed items into the box,Grandma put inside a note saying “Go to hell!” in big letters with her name at the bottom. Grandma said, with a big smile, “I really appreciate your help.” When the FedEx truck drove away, Grandma said she felt an unbelievable amount of joy. She never heard from the scammers again.

Jamie Goldfarb had finished reading the last bedtime book to her three-year-old son, Kai, when he told her he was hungry. The mum usually complied with such requests since Kai had difficulty feeding as a baby. But this time, as she headed downstairs to fetch a banana, she heard him murmur, “Now that's how you get a fourth book.”
Goldfarb was astonished that her sweet child would tell her a lie, but experts would say that Kai was engaging in complicated cognitive reasoning(认知推理)in his successful attempt at extra storytime. And according to researchers, lying provides a rich workout for developing brains.
Though experts agree that there's no particular area in the brain leading to telling lies, certain regions of the brain are engaged during the construction of a lie. The brain must also juggle(兼顾)emotions, memories, and knowledge about another person, as well as think about alternative paths the lie could take. “It's really a whole network of complex interactions(相互作用),” says a US psychologist Immordino-Yang. And that's why the ability to lie develops over time, as a young brain develops.
Starting around the age of two, a child is probably going to tell his first lie to keep himself from getting into trouble—and he probably won't be very good at it. Older preschool-age children tend to try to lie as a way to make themselves look better. “They may claim they did something that they didn't do because they want to get praise, or they exaggerate(夸张)because they want the parent to think, ‘Oh wow, you're amazing,'” says Victoria Talwar, author of the book The Truth About Lying. As children enter elementary school, their more-developed brains can craft more complex lies.
Parents might feel disappointed when they catch their children being untruthful, but experts advise avoiding shaming them—or calling them liars. “That won't necessarily promote the behaviour you want,” Talwar says. Instead, she suggests parents focus on the behaviour they'd like a child to exhibit and use language that encourages truth-telling. When the lie is more involved, experts recommend having a direct conversation about it.
8.What do the underlined words “complied with” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Let down. B.Relied on.
C.Gave in to. D.Made use of.
9.What can we learn about telling lies from Paragraph 3
A.It is unavoidable in children's life.
B.It is based on complex brain activities.
C.It is controlled by a specific area in the brain.
D.It is likely to hold back the development of brains.
10.What is the main reason why older preschool-age children lie
A.To have fun. B.To protect others.
C.To win praise. D.To avoid getting into trouble.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Suggestions on solving children's lies.
B.Possible harm to children if they are called liars.
C.Influence of children's lies on parent-child relationships.
D.Relationships between children's telling lies and their daily behaviour.
D
O'Brien and Samantha Kassirer from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University conducted two experiments to determine the levels of people's happiness when they gave away money or when they spent it on themselves.
The first experiment involved 96 college students receiving $5 every day for five days. They had to spend the money on the same thing each day. Researchers randomly asked the participants to either spend the money on themselves or give it to someone else, like through a tip or an online donation to a charity. The participants ended each day by reflecting on their spending experience and their overall level of happiness. Regardless of how they spent the money, everyone started off with roughly the same level of self-reported happiness. Those who spent the money on themselves, however, experienced a decline in happiness over the five-day period. The people who gave the money to someone else maintained their happiness levels.
The second experiment conducted online, involved 502 people playing 10 rounds of a word puzzle game. When the players won in a round, they received 5 cents. The participants could either keep the 5 cents or donate it to a charity. After each round, people rated the level of happiness they felt after winning a round. As with the first study, those who gave away the money reported a longer stretch of happiness than those who kept the money for themselves.
As for why people who used the money for themselves aren't happy for so long, the researchers explain that focusing on an outcome—like getting paid—can diminish the experience. When people focus on an action—like giving to charity—they concentrate more on the act itself as a joyful event, explaining why happiness stays more consistent among those who spend the money on others. “If you want to sustain happiness over time, our new research shows that repeated giving, even in the same way to the same people, may make you continue to feel much fresher and more enjoyable,” O'Brien said.
So the next time you think about spending money on yourself, maybe give it to someone in need instead. Your happiness will thank you.
12.What is the finding of the experiments
A.People get more happiness when giving money to others.
B.Those who give money to others like to do it online.
C.Your level of happiness can be influenced by many factors.
D.Those who win rewards are willing to give money to a charity.
13.According to O'Brien, what is the secret of maintaining happiness
A.Saving enough money. B.Trying something new.
C.Keeping on giving. D.Balancing rest and work.
14.Which of the following shows the correct structure of the whole text
A. B. C. D.
15.What is the best title for the text
A.Money isn't the key to happiness
B.It is better to give than to receive
C.Happiness depends upon ourselves
D.People spend their money differently

How to Make the World a Better Place
When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. That is not all the truth. 16 An act of kindness can bring a smile to a person's face even if the smile lasts only for a moment.
Give away your money. 17 For example, if you want to help hungry children, you can try to find an international organization that provides food for those in poor areas. Every cent you give away will mean a lot.
Help a stranger. Your small actions can brighten the day of others. Hold the door for someone whose hands are full. Help the blind cross the street. 18 The key is to expect nothing in return for your acts of kindness.
Care about those you know. Show the people close to you how much you care about them. Tell them they mean a lot to you. Make a beautiful gift for a friend. Take your husband to his favourite fun place if he has had a hard week. 19
Be grateful to others. Have you had good service in a restaurant Thank the waiter. Do you have a very good neighbour who is always there when you need her Tell her how much you appreciate her being in your life.
20 If a friend needs skills in a certain area, offer your advice. Perhaps she is struggling to set up a computer, and you know how to do that. Offer whatever ability you have, but always remember to be polite.
A.Share your knowledge.
B.Keep walking forward.
C.Small steps, not big ones.
D.Give your seat on the bus to an old man.
E.Choose charity that has meaning for you.
F.Tell your children how much they mean to you.
G.Ordinary people like you and me can also help a lot.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings(兄弟姐妹)and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people.
However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people.
When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to have a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A lady who was beautifully dressed got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them.
The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
It was two weeks later that we heard screams coming from next door late one night.
Paragraph 2:
Father called an ambulance which arrived within minutes and took the patient to hospital.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
It was two weeks later that we heard screams coming from next door late one night. Without hesitation, my father sprang to his feet and rushed out of the house, with the rest of us following him. As we stepped into the next door, we found the boy and the girl crying hopelessly beside their mother, who was lying at the bottom of the staircase where she had fallen. My mother tried to comfort the two kids while my father ran over to check how terrible the situation was by trying to speak to the poor lady, but she wasn't responding to anything.
Paragraph 2:
Father called an ambulance which arrived within minutes and took the patient to hospital. My parents brought the children back to our house. Mother fed them some hot soup to calm their nerves. The kids told us that their father was away on a business trip, so we helped them contact their father who promised them he would catch a plane and join them as soon as possible. So they stayed the night with us. My sister and I had to give up our room for them but we did not mind. Before they went to bed, we shook hands and became friends.
