When Ariel Cordova reached Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she noticed a beautiful female mute swan (疣鼻天鹅) near the water’s edge. Cordova, who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund recovery center in Manhattan, knew that swans can attack people. But strangely, as she got close to this one, it didn’t move. So she was certain that the bird was ill and needed medical attention. Cordova put her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. And then a thought came to her: What do I do now
Her best choice was the Wild Bird Fund recovery center, but that was on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on foot all that way Luckily, a stranger offered her a bike and then she took the swan to a nearby subway station by bike.
On the subway, no one seemed to be astounded by the feathered passenger. “Even one guy, who was sitting right in front of me, just gave the swan a calm glance,” says Cordova.
Cordova called the recovery center, and Tristan, an animal-care manger, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird to the recovery center. There, staff members decided that the swan might have been hurt by a fish hook.
The staff looked after the swan carefully and got it back up on its webbed feet. The swan even made a boyfriend in the center. Sadly, it had a bacterial infection. Two months after Cordova came to its rescue, it passed away.
It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big city literally (确实地). In all, Cordova traveled two hours by bike by subway, and by car to save it with endless efforts. Tristan says, “We are angels of love. That’s the perfect summary of who we are. I firmly believe that we will continue to save wildlife.”

B. It was badly poisoned by the river water.
C. It died though it had been cared well.
D. It was sent to the recovery center by two strangers.
7. Which of the following can best describe Cordova
A. Kind and considerate. B. Modest and thankful.
C. Brave and generous. D. Curious and creative.

There is hope for our planet’s survival. Innovative products are being designed to reduce our dependence on plastic, single-use plastic in particular.
One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its “Feel the Peel” machine, an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3D prints a recyclable bio plastic cup with the leftover orange peels (果皮) .
Designed with global energy company Eni. the juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome (圆顶), feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is mad cup of round tracks that holdup to 1, 500 oranges. A 3D printer is setup in the base of the machine.
The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited (使沉积) into an “orange peel” bio-plastic cup, ready to enjoy. Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and gather at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled and mixed with Poly lactic Acid, creating a bio plastic material The bio plastic is then heated and melted into a filament (细丝) and the 3D printer then creates recyclable bioplastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.
How cool that is! It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take “Feel the Peel” beyond just orange juice.
“The principle of recycling is a must for today’s objects,” says Carlo Ratti, “Working with Eni, we tried to show recycling in a very tangible way, by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be us cd well beyond their juice. The next improvement of “Feel the Peel” might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels.”
8. What can we know about “Feel the Peel” machine
A. It increases the output of orange juice.
B It makes something beyond orange juice.
C. It makes orange juice taste better.
D. It bans the use of single-use plastic.
9. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4
A. The reason for the machine’s popularity.
B. The structure of the machine.
C. The way the machine works.
D. The way to use the machine.

A. Pessimistic. B. Cautious. C. Positive. D. In different.
11 What can be the best title for the text

While rice and wheat are the two most commonly consumed cereal grains worldwide, a study covering more than 100,000 people in Northwest China has revealed that choosing rice as a main food may result in a lower risk of obesity.
Researchers from Xi’an Jiaotong University collected data from participants aged 35 to 74 who are residents of five northwestern provincial-level regions. They divided the participants into three groups. The first group eats rice as their main food, consuming it either daily or four to six times per week, while consuming wheat less than four to six times per week. The second group’s main food is wheat, and the third group consumes both rice and wheat as their main food, with similar frequency.
Then the researchers compared results and found out that rice preference might be associated with a lower risk of certain obesity types in the population of Northwest China. Higher wheat intake was associated with higher risks of excessive body fat and central obesity (stomach fat) in men and central obesity in women, according to the study findings published in the journal Nutrients.
According to the researchers, previous animal studies shows that wheat gluten (谷蛋白) promoted weight gain by reducing heat production and energy consumption, while rice protein shows the potential for anti-obesity and triglyceride-lowering (抗肥胖和降低甘油三酯) effects. Meanwhile, rice-based dietary patterns often have more fresh vegetables, meat and fish servings. People with wheat preference in Northwest China tend to eat large bowls of noodles with fewer vegetables or less meat, and sometimes even with a large amount of oil.
However, researchers noted that given the vast territory and diverse ethnic groups present in Northwest China, further studies might be necessary to fully understand the regional specificity and potential hidden reasons for the observed links.
12. What do you know about the study in Northwest China
A. People can eat rice to lose weight. B. Eating rice will help you live longer.
C. Rice is the perfect choice for people who are fat. D. Eating rice may reduce people’s risk of being fat.
13. How did the researchers figure out the findings of the study
A. By offering examples. B. By referring to some data.
C. By making a comparison. D. By quoting an expert’s opinion.
14. What does the previous animal study show
A. Wheat gluten reduced weight gain by reducing heat and energy.
B. Rice protein has the potential to fight obesity and lower triglyceride.
C. People often eat noodles with more fresh vegetables, meat and fish servings.
D. People who prefer wheat in Northwest China tend to cat small bowls of noodles.
15. What will the researchers probably do next
A. They will carry out further studies.
B. They will change their research methods.
C. They will promote rice as the main food.
D. They will figure out the number of ethnic groups in China.

Last Christmas my older sister Jane got a unicycle (独轮脚踏车) she had requested. I thought it kind of strange, wondering why she would want something like that. She did ride and practice for a while, but eventually stopped.
Curious, I tried it, finding it very hard and thinking it impossible for a weak girl like me to learn. Since our dining room of our old house had low beams (屋梁), I used them like monkey bars to practice riding, which helped a lot. Because I thought it was really fun, I practiced every spare moment I had, teaching myself to go forwards, backwards and to turn. Practicing was something I loved to do in my spare time, but it did get discouraging when I fell. After months of practicing, I finally made it.
One morning, our teacher Maria excitedly announced that a school talent show was to be held to raise money for charity. She encouraged my classmates to sign up for it. I’m not always best in front of a crowd, which was why I was very nervous when I meant to put on my performance by doing a hula hoop (圈) and riding a unicycle on stage. But I overcame my fear and entered myself for the talent show, for which I practiced a lot in case I should mess up.
My routine (整套动作) was to do the hula hoop from my neck, down to my stomach, then to my knees. After that, I was to ride my unicycle forwards and backwards on stage. Lastly I would do the hula hoop while riding the unicycle. I was to do all this accompanied by my carefully selected music. I wondered what people from my seventh grade would think of my performance. With my friends inspiring me, I built up my confidence. On the night of the show, many people found out there was going to be a unicycle performance, so more came, even the headmaster.
Para. 1: I was both nervous and excited when it was my turn.

Para. 2: When I got home, I couldn’t wait to check my mobile phone left at home.

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

【答案】I’m extremely delighted to hear that you need volunteers for Campus Art Festival. So I’m writing to apply to be one of the volunteers.
First of all, I am monitor of my class, so I have the ability to organize activities. Moreover, I am easy to get along with, which is especially necessary for a volunteer. Last but not least, I love art so much that I can devote myself to serving the participants.
I am sure that I can perfectly live up to your expectations. I’d appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration and I’m looking forward to your reply.

【答案】I was both nervous and excited when it was my turn. I had a deep breath and then rode my unicycle towards the stage. When I heard the music, I started to put the hula hoop in my neck. Carefully, I moved it down to my stomach. Everything seemed good. The audiences applauded for me when the hula hoop was about to my knees. And then, an unlucky thing happened. I didn’t ride backwards firmly so I tumbled. At that moment I felt my heart was broken. However, after a very short rest, I stood up with my red face. I tried again and finally, I made it. Seeing this, all the audiences cheered and applauded happily.
When I got home, I couldn’t wait to check my mobile phone left at home. My deskmate Mary sent the performance video to me and expressed that she was so proud of me. There are also many messages from my classmates and teachers, which encouraged me a lot. Not only could I challenge myself but also I helped my school raise money for charity in this performance.
