Families are taking down their decorations and throwing out their trees when Christmas has come to an end. However, one man in Texas is reusing the trees for a good cause. Jamie Willis set up Canes (拐杖) for Veterans (退伍军人) Central Texas, an organization that makes free canes out of waste wood for veterans in need. Willis started the organization when he found himself in need of a strong cane, he told CBS News.
Jamie Willis had served in the army for eight years, but was left disabled. He would use a cane to get around, but didn’t like the one he received from Veterans Affairs. He decided to ask for a suitable replacement (替代品) from the organization Free Canes for Veterans. Oscar Morris, who ran the organization, apologized to Willis because they were all handed out.
He then considered making one for himself. Luckily with the help of Morris, Willis made his first cane. Morris encouraged him to make another cane for someone else in need, which gave Willis an idea. He started the Canes for Veterans Central Texas.
During its first year, Willis simply collected thrown-away trees and wood. Now, after getting some attention, Willis has received many donated Christmas trees from neighbors and natives. Since 2016, Willis and his team have made 222 canes for veterans in need. He’s even started to make the canes with slogans (标语) and designs chosen by the veterans, making each one meaningful to those veterans.
“It’s a great feeling,” he told CBS News. “It takes their eyes off their so-called disability and it takes their eye to the cane. Because when people look at a person with just a metal cane, everyone just wonders what happens,” Willis added. “But now, when they’re walking around with canes that we make, they’re looking at the cane, a piece of artwork.”
4. Why did Jamie Willis finally decide to make himself a cane
A He doesn’t liked the cane without a slogan.
B. The cane he received cannot help him to get around.

B. They are designed to attract public attention to disabled veterans.
C. They are popular because of the special and meaningful slogan.
D. They are likely to keep people away from the disabled veterans.

The Mogao Grottoes were a center of Buddhist life and some of the world’s great cultures for hundreds of years. Antarctic blue whales have been perceived again in the sub-Antarctic, island of South Georgia. An international team of researchers discovered the animals five decades after whaling (捕鲸业) nearly caused them to disappear forever. “The ocean resources at South Georgia were heavily developed during the early 20th-century industrial whaling,” says lead author Susannah Calderan, an ecologist with the Scottish Association for Marine Science.
Antarctic blue whales were plentiful in the area until whaling began there in 1904, kicking off the beginning of industrial whaling in the Southern Ocean. While hunters originally focused on species that could be easily caught, like the humpback whale, the focus quickly moved to the blue whale. Between 1904 and 1973, 345, 775 Antarctic blue whales were killed in the Southern hemisphere (半球) and in the northern Indian Ocean. Around South Georgia, blue whale catches were reported year-round without stopping. Between 1904 and 1971, industrial whaling caused 42, 698 blue whales’ death, blue whales almost disappeared in these areas.
Researchers studied all Antarctic blue whale data from the last three decades. They examined sightings (目睹) from scientific surveys collected by observers on ships, as well as opportunistic. Sightings reported by sea men and ship passengers to South Georgia. They also examined acoustic (声音的) recordings of blue whales.
They found that whale surveys from ships off South Georgia resulted in just one blue whale sighting between 1998 and 2018. But more recent surveys suggest better news. A survey in February of 2020 found nearly 60 blue whale sightings, and several acoustic detections (探测). A total of 41 blue whales have been recognized through photos from South Georgia between 2011and 2020.
“Their return is very meaningful, as it was widely thought that blue whales at South Georgia might have been hunted beyond a point where they could recover, and. might never be seen again in great numbers at South Georgia,” Caldera n says. “Our research shows that, populations can recover even from very low levels if they’re given enough protection.”
12. What does the underlined word “perceived” in paragraph l mean
A. Kept. B. Spotted. C. Hunted. D. Destroyed.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly want to tell us
A. The wide spread of blue whales in the past.
B. The development of industrial whaling.
C. The cause of blue whales’ disappearance.
D. The tricks of catching blue whales easily.
14. What did the researchers find through their surveys in South Georgia
A. More and more people like watching blue whales.
B. There is an increasing return of blue whales.
C. Blue whales are in a more dangerous situation.
D. South Georgia is a good place to watch blue whales.
15. What might be discussed in the following paragraph

Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皱眉), and then searched for her dad.
“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in an exciting voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”
He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔); her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把……砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
“Why is everybody so busy ” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She thought at least her own family members would respect her feelings, but they were no exception. At the thought of this, her eyes were filled with tears.
Then the knocking sound on the door stopped her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately (故意地) came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching (挠) the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident came to her mind.
A. He doesn’t liked the cane without a slogan.
B The cane he received cannot help him to get around.
C. He failed to apply a proper cane from Free Canes for Veterans.
D. The canes in Free Canes for Veterans were too expensive to him.
5. What made Willis start his organization
A. His requirement. B. Morris’ encouragement.
C. Public support. D. The waste of Christmas trees.
6. What is the local people’s attitude to Willis’ behavior
A. Curious. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Supportive.
7. What can we learn about Wills’ canes from the last paragraph
A. They distract people’s attention from the veterans’ disabled body.
B. They are designed to attract public attention to disabled veterans.
C. They are popular because of the special and meaningful slogan.
D. They are likely to keep people away from the disabled veterans.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. A

A total of 41 blue whales have been recognized through photos from South Georgia between 2011and 2020.(他们发现,1998年至2018年间,在南乔治亚州附近的船只上进行的鲸鱼调查只发现了一只蓝鲸。
根据最后一段最后一句话“Our research shows that, populations can recover even from very low levels if they’re given enough protection.(我们的研究表明,如果给予足够的保护,人口甚至可以从非常低的水平恢复)”可知,如果给予了足够的保护,蓝鲸的数量甚至可以从非常低的水平恢复。由此可推知,接下来文章要讨论关于保护南极蓝鲸的方法。故选C。

With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year-old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK ”
“Why is everybody so busy ” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school middle school and even in high school too!
Softly, she asked, “Honey, did I do anything wrong ”

【答案】 At this very moment, Sirin could no longer control her feelings. “Why is everybody so busy ” she roared, tears streaming down her face. She assumed that her mom and dad would feel proud of her great talent and would appreciate her painting but she was disgusted with the words “no time”. “I hate you!” She screamed, grabbed the painting on the table and tore it in half. Shocked, her mom threw her arms around her tightly, saying regretfully and firmly, “Baby, I am so sorry! I promise this mistake will not be repeated.”
The next morning, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall. It was beautifully framed and just below the painting, it was written “We are so proud of you, our little girl!” On seeing it, she burst out crying. She ran to her mom and hugged her tightly, fully aware of her mom’s love. Recalling her mom’s stress from work and daily life, she was regretting her previous behavior. She ducked her head, apologizing, “Sorry, Mom!” It dawned on them that though everything came and went, mutual understanding would stay forever in their family.
