Social networking isn’t only for the under 40s. More than 25 percent of Americans 50 years and older stay connected using sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, according to new research.
“The latest data tells us that more and more social networking is becoming a part of everyday life for Americans 50 plus,” said Kevin Donnellan, the chief communications officer at AARP, which released the report.
Nearly a quarter of older Americans are on Facebook and 73 percent said they use it to stay in touch with relatives, but not just their children and grandchildren. “They are using the Internet to keep up with the world and the people who are important to them,” said Jean Koppen, the author of the report. She added that older adults are also on Facebook to stay connected, not only with their family, but with their friends and those in the same age group. Almost 50 percent of older adults were introduced to the social networking sites by a family member, mainly a child or grandchild. “Just under one-fifth of adults aged 50 and older say they do not use the Internet,” according to the report.
The findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,863 adults. In addition to keeping up on Facebook and Twitter older adults are aware of the latest technology. Eighty-three percent had heard about the Apple iPad and 11 percent intended to buy one.
Despite the popularity of the Internet among the over 50s, they still mostly go to print newspapers and magazines for news. Only one percent said they followed blogs.

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they express regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp comers of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid (避免) those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. it’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say, “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance (保障) for my emotional well-being.
8. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule
A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D. Move an object out of the way before it trips (绊倒) someone.
9. Why did the author decide to go to her office on Good Friday
A. To keep her appointment with the eye doctor.
B. To meet her father who was already an old man.
C. To join in the holiday celebration of the company.
D. To finish her work before the deadline approached.
10. Which word(s) can best replace the underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3
A. given up. B. Lacked. C. Avoided. D. Wasted.
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words
C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of Mind
D
The thought of low material need and being unwilling to work, marry and have children, is described as a “lying down” lifestyle recently. It creates an emotional reaction among many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly competitive society.
Many young people complained to the Global Times that duties, including work stress, family argument and financial pressure, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution (内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get stuck in an endless competition against peers(同龄人).
“Instead of always following the ‘good quality’ of struggle and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary(暂时的) lying down as release and adjustment,” said an expert. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly, the majority of young people, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, admit that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel ashamed about their constant loss of morale (士气).
“Young people have both ambition and confusion about their future, but most of us have refused to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”
12. Which of the following is NOT a “lying down” lifestyle according to the passage
A. Being uninterested in material enjoyment and refusing to shoulder duties.
B. Being involved in various social activities.
C. Stopping to breathe in a stressful life.
D Giving up struggle and sacrifice.
13. What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young
A. Poor health from working so hard. B. Increasing material wealth from families.
C. Growing pressure from family and social life. D. Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
14 What’s the expert’s attitude toward the “lying down” group
A. Understanding. B. opposed C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
15. What can be inferred about the young generation from the text
A. They would rather escape than take challenges. B. They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.
C. They find their dreams far beyond their reach. D. They never really drop their responsibilities.

D 9. B 10. A 11. B

根据第一段“Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they express regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.(英语中最悲伤的两个词是“如果”。我的人生目标是永远不要说那些话,因为它们传达着遗憾、失去的机会、错误和失望)”以及第二段“My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp comers of a glass coffee table.(我父亲在我们家有一句名言:“多花一分钟把事情做好。”
根据第三段“But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him.(但后来我想到他已经84岁了,我意识到我不应该放弃见到他的机会)”可知,父亲说在周五去看眼科医生时经过作者的办公室,虽然那天是假日,但作者想到父亲84了,自己不应该放弃每一次见父亲的机会,于是又改口说那天上班。
故选A。

The thought of low material need and being unwilling to work, marry and have children, is described as a “lying down” lifestyle recently. It creates an emotional reaction among many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly competitive society.
Many young people complained to the Global Times that duties, including work stress, family argument and financial pressure, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution (内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get stuck in an endless competition against peers(同龄人).
“Instead of always following the ‘good quality’ of struggle and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary(暂时) lying down as release and adjustment,” said an expert.
D. Giving up struggle and sacrifice.
13. What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young
A. Poor health from working so hard. B. Increasing material wealth from families.
C. Growing pressure from family and social life. D. Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
14. What’s the expert’s attitude toward the “lying down” group
B 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第三段“Instead of always following the ‘good quality’ of struggle and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary(暂时的) lying down as release and adjustment(他们不喜欢总是遵循“奋斗和牺牲的好品质”来承受压力,而是更喜欢暂时躺着作为释放和调整)”和“It is no wonder that some young people, … would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.(难怪一些年轻人,……会努力过一种简单的生活方式,把烦恼抛在脑后。)”可知,学者对“躺平”群体的态度是理解的,故选A。
