Growing up in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles in the 1970s, Ghuan Featherstone only remembers riding a horse with his parents at a nearby park when he was eight years old.
But ever since, he’s been chasing that sense of freedom and power he felt on the horse that day. “I felt like I could conquer anything,” Featherstone, now 51, said in a Story Corps interview last month with Jordan Humphreys, a 13-year-old horseback rider. After serving in the Army for eight years, Featherstone remained determined to realize his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy.
When he returned to Los Angeles, he learned to ride at stables known as “The Hill” in Compton. Riders there would jump on their horse backs and take their horses into the city streets. In 2012, a fire burned down The Hill. What had become a shelter for the youth was suddenly gone. Sensing the void (空缺) after the fire, Featherstone opened his own stables, Urban Saddles, in 2019 to create a space where he could teach kids like Humphreys to care for and ride horses.
As a black man, Featherstone is against prejudice. People of color are often prevented from pop culture and historical representations of the cowboy. His stable has helped keep the cowboy lifestyle alive in the streets. “Riding through the streets on horseback has given me a way to connect with others in the community,” said Humphreys. “It makes them happy seeing us on a horse and then they may be smiling, and I believe that when we come through, we give them a sense of hope,” he added.
If there’s one lesson Featherstone hopes to convey to kids, it’s a respect for all life. “We’re respecting the animals and we’re respecting each other,” he said.
4. What made Featherstone want to become a cowboy
A. His love to his parents. B. The duty of saving the world.
C. The serving years in the army. D. His childhood riding experience.
5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3
A. The life of being a cowboy.
B. The dream of being a cowboy.
C. The course of opening Urban Saddles.
D. The place of teaching kids like Humphreys.
6. Which can be one of the purposes of Fetherstone’s opening his own stables
A. To teach the black kids to ride horses.
B. To help the kids to learn to respect all life.
C. To make money by teaching the kids to ride.
D. To train the cowboys to become more hopeful.
7. Which of the following words may best describe Fetherstone
A. Smart but careless. B. Slow but productive.
C. Diligent and broad-minded. D. Determined and kind-hearted.
C
Each year, backed up by a growing anti-consumerist movement, people are using the holiday season to call on us all to shop less.
Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasingly turned their sight on our “consumer culture”, with Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day growing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.
We clearly have a growing resource problem. The products we make, buy and use are often linked to the destruction of our waterways, biodiversity, climate and the land on which millions of people live, but to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is a systematic problem.
While we complain about environmental destruction over Christmas, environmentalists often forget what the holiday season actually means for many people. In fact, for most, rather than an add-on to an already heavy shopping year, Christmas is likely the only time of year they have the opportunity to spend on friends and family, or even just to buy the necessities needed for modern life.
This is particularly true for Boxing Day, often laughed at by anti-consumerists the most. While we may look down on the queues in front of the shops, for many, those sales provide the chance to buy things they've needed all year. As journalist Leigh Phillips argues, “This is one of the few times of the year that people can even hope to afford such ‘luxuries’, the Christmas presents their kids are asking for, or just an appliance that works.”
Indeed, the richest 7% of people are responsible for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account of our consumption “problem” anyway. Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring people like Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system
Anyway, anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working class about their life choice, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problem. It is no wonder no one is changing their behaviour—or that environmental destruction continues without becoming any less severe.
8. What can be inferred about the environmentalist movement from Paragraphs 2 and 3
A. It has targeted the wrong persons. B. It has achieved its intended purposes.
C. It has solved the environmental problems. D. It has persuaded consumers not to shop any more.
9. What does Leigh Phillips think of Boxing Day
A. A trap for consumers. B. A tough problem to deal with.
C. A precious shopping opportunity. D. A positive contribution to the economy.
10. For what purpose is Roman Abramovich mentioned in the text
A. To show how rich he is.
B To announce he is a Russian.
C. To present his contributions to the environment.
D. To suggest the real cause of environmental problems hasn't been found.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The environmental problems are very serious.
B. Less shopping can't solve the environmental problems.
C. Resources are becoming fewer and fewer on the earth.
D. Measures should be taken to protect the environment.
D
Plants cannot run or hide, so they need other strategies to avoid being eaten. Some curl up their leaves, others produce chemicals to make themselves taste bad if they sense animals drooling on them, chewing them up or laying eggs on them — all signals of an attack. New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive (先发制人的) defense that even works against other pest species.
When ecologist John Orrock of the University of Wisconsin-Madison sprayed snail slime — a liquid the animals release as they slide along — onto soil, nearby tomato plants appeared to notice. They increased their levels of an enzyme (酶), which is known to prevent plant-eating animals. “None of the plants were ever actually attacked,” Orrock says. “We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry.”
Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning’s impact on another potential threat. The investigators found that hungry caterpillars (毛虫), which usually eat tomato leaves greedily, had no appetite for them after the plants were exposed to snail slime and activated their chemical resistance. This nonspecific defense may be a strategy that benefits the plants by further improving their overall possibilities of survival, says Orrock, who reported the results with his colleagues in March in Oecologia.
The finding that a snail’s approach can cause a plant response that affects a different animal made Richard Karban curious, a plant communications expert, who was not involved in the study. “It is significant that the plants are responding before being damaged and that these cues are having such far-ranging effects,” Karban says. The research was comprehensive, he adds, but he wonders how the tomato plants felt chemicals in snail slime that never actually touched them.
“That’s the million-dollar question,” Orrock says. He hopes future research will make out the mechanisms that enable plants to sense these relatively distant cues.
12. Why did John Orrock spray a liquid onto soil near tomato plants
A. Because it gives them a warning.
B. Because it makes them grow better.
C. Because it keeps plant-eating animals away.
D. Because it informs plant-eating animals of danger.
13. Why is the example of “caterpillars” mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To introduce another animal.
B. To confirm the result of the study.
C. To appeal to people to protect animals.
D. To analyze different resistance chemicals.
14. What does Richard Karban really want to know
A. What the finding of the research is.
B. What the chemicals in the snail slime are.
C. Whether the research is of practical value.
D. How tomato plants become aware of danger.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Watchful Plants B. Greedy Animals
C. A Snail’s Approach D. A Defense Attack

How would you feel if you were invited to the moon If you found a gold coin, would you save it, give it to charity or use it for a holiday Personality quizzes of this kind, known as “psychometrics”, have bothered many job seekers. Now, it is being applied to the oldest problem in finance: will a borrower repay
In rich countries, lenders use credit scores to weigh risk. But just 7% of Africans and 13% of South Asians are covered by credit bureaus Bailey Klinger of the Entrepreneurial Finance Lab (EFL), which explores new kinds of credit data, argues that psychometrics could include many more people in the financial system. Everyone has a personality, after all.
Judging character is not new. Psychometrics attempts to make it a science. The model developed by EFL has undergone many tests and adapted to different cultures. Its collected data reflect something unnoticed. For instance, young optimists are risky, but old ones are a safe bet.
Clever design cuts cheating. There are no obvious right answers; responses are cross-checked for consistency. The model monitors mouse movements for signs of indecision or distraction. When borrowers lie to get a loan, they often do so in predictable ways. In an EFL test, people are shown pictures of five drinks and asked which one they would be. Choosing water over something with small bubbles may be a sign of cheating.
This sounds fanciful, but there is evidence that it works. In one Indonesian bank, combining psychometrics with existing customer data cut default (违约) rates for small businesses by 45%. A study by the World Bank found that EFL’s model increased lending to those without a credit history.
The technique needs further development. At present, turning to credit bureaus is still the best way to tell if somebody will repay a loan. But bureaus improve more slowly than technology. Lenders will find ever more ways to look into their customers’ souls.
16. What are the figures intended to show in the second paragraph
A. Racial discrimination from lenders.
B. Uncertain property of poor people.
C. Great risks brought by credit scores.
D. Current weakness of credit bureaus.
17. What can we learn about EFL’s model in the third paragraph
A. It has been greatly improved.
B. Its data confirm some ideas.
C. Its effects vary with cultures.
D. It can’t tell character exactly.
18. What does “mouse movements” refer to in the fourth paragraph
A. Borrowers’ responses. B. Lenders’ answers.
C. Pictures of five drinks. D. Drinks with bubbles.
19. What does the last paragraph imply about psychometrics in finance
A. It will replace credit bureaus.
B. It will be mature in the future.
C. It has won most lenders’ love.
D. It is far from satisfactory.

Ring a Bell
Ms. Tracy looked up from her yellow notebook and cleared her throat. The noise in the class died down as we turned toward her. "We're going to help a charity to collect money by ringing a bell. Each of you will ring it for four hours," she announced. As the words left her lips, complaints could be heard around the room. Unwillingly, I dug for my planner and look notes. Four hours of ringing a stupid bell. Four hours that I could be studying for the SAT. Was this supposed to be a joke I joined the students around the table and signed up for 1he first day of break-to get it over with.
A few weeks later, I was standing next to the big blue-and-white Walmart. There was another guy holding a jar across from me. Great, I was going to be stuck here ringing a bell with a guy who was trying to get donations for another charity. To top it off, it was only about 4.4℃.
Slowly, I put on the red dress bearing the symbol of ow charity. I hoped that I already spent two minutes doing that, Ring! Ring! A group of older women came up with their walking sticks to drop in some change. А man with а broad-cimmеd bat came by and put some coins in. I checked my phone. Just 10 minutes had passed.
A strong bitterly-cold wind blew against my freezing face. I was starting to regret ignoring my mom's advice to wear a scarf. I looked up, wishing that time would pass more quickly. A few birds swept around the poles. The sky was gently blue. Palm trees waved in the cold wind. How comfortable it might be to curl(蜷缩)up with a hot cup of tea and a book on the cozy sofa. Then another ring brought me back to reality.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me.

Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily.

D 5. C 6. B 7. D

B. To announce he is a Russian.
A 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据第二段“Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasingly turned their sight on our “consumer culture”, with Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day growing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.(由于对资源枯竭的担忧,近年来环保主义者越来越多地把目光转向我们的“消费文化”,像“东西的故事”和“新一天不买东西”这样的团体日益成为一种运动,越来越多地将我们所有的疾病归咎于我们的购物欲望)”及第三段中“but to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is a systematic problem(但将这些问题归咎于圣诞购物者是被误导的,这让我们陷入了把系统性问题归咎于个人的老陷阱)”可推知,环保主义者把环境问题归咎于购物者是错误的。故选A。
根据第五段中“As journalist Leigh Phillips argues, “This is one of the few times of the year that people can even hope to afford such ‘luxuries’, the Christmas presents their kids are asking for, or just an appliance that works.”(正如记者Leigh Phillips所说:“这是一年中为数不多的几次人们甚至可以指望买得起这些‘奢侈品’的时候之一,比如孩子们想要的圣诞礼物,或者只是一件好用的电器。”)”
根据倒数第二段“Indeed, the richest 7% of people are responsible for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account of our consumption “problem” anyway. Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring people like Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system (事实上,最富有的7%的人要为50%的温室气体排放负责。无论如何,当你考虑到我们的消费“问题”时,这就变得尤为有害。为什么环保主义者攻击这些人,却忽视俄罗斯亿万富翁Roman Abramovich这样的人?Abramovich拥有一艘价值15亿英镑、装有导弹防御系统的游艇)”可推知,文章提到Roman Abramovich是为了表明环保主义者没有弄清环境问题的根本原因。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Anyway, anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working class about their life choice, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problem. It is no wonder no one is changing their behaviour—or that environmental destruction continues without becoming any less severe.(不管怎么说,反消费主义已经变成了一场富人对工人阶级谈论他们的生活选择的运动,而忽视了我们环境问题的真正原因。难怪没有人改变他们的行为,也难怪环境破坏仍在继续,却丝毫没有减轻)”结合本文介绍了环保主义者认为环境问题是普通民众购物造成的,而反消费主义实际上是富人对工人阶级的生活选择进行贬低的运动,忽视了环境问题的真正原因。可知,文章主要讲的是减少购物不能解决环境问题。故选B。

A 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据第二段最后一句“We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry(我们只是给它们一些暗示攻击即将来临的线索,这就足以使它们的化学反应发生巨大变化)”可推知,John Orrock在西红柿植株附近的泥土上喷洒液体的目的是给予植物一种警告,让它们能够产生自我保护性反应。故选 A。
根据第三段第一句“Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning’s impact on another potential threat(最初,Orrock发现这种防御方法对蜗牛有效;在最新的研究中,他的团队测量了这种黏糊糊的警告对另一个潜在威胁的影响)”可推知,文中提到毛虫的例子是为了验证这一点,即确认研究的结果。
根据第四段最后一句并结合对最后一段“The research was comprehensive, he adds, but he wonders how the tomato plants felt chemicals in snail slime that never actually touched them.(他补充说,这项研究是全面的,但他想知道西红柿植物是如何感受到蜗牛粘液中的化学物质的,而这些化学物质实际上从未接触过它们)”可推知,Richard Karban实际上想了解的是西红柿植株是如何意识到危险的。
根据第一段中文章的中心句“New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive (先发制人的) defense that even works against other pest species.(现在新的研究表明,一些植物可以在食草动物发动攻击前很好地感觉到它们,这让植物准备了先发制人的防御,甚至可以对抗其他有害物种)”可知,本文主要讲述的是有关植物的科学研究,研究发现植物有对外在威胁或攻击的自我保护性反应。 故选A。
E
D 17. A 18. A 19. B
根据第二段中“In rich countries, lenders use credit scores to weigh risk. But just 7% of Africans and 13% of South Asians are covered by credit bureaus (征信机构).(在富裕国家,贷款人使用信用评分来衡量风险。但只有7%的非洲人和13%的南亚人受到信用局的保护)”可知,两个数字表明只有很少的非洲人和南亚人受到信用局的保护。由此推知,这第二段的数据意在显示信贷机构的当前弱点。故选D。
【17题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The model developed by EFL has undergone many tests and adapted to different cultures.(由EFL开发的模型经过了许多试验,并适应了不同的文化)”可知,EFL开发的模型测试已经有了很大改善。故选A。
根据第四段中“The model monitors mouse movements for signs of indecision or distraction. When borrowers lie to get a loan, they often do so in predictable ways. In an EFL test, people are shown pictures of five drinks and asked which one they would be. Choosing water over something with small bubbles may be a sign of cheating.(该模型监测鼠标的移动,寻找优柔寡断或分心的迹象。当借款人为了获得贷款而撒谎时,他们通常会以可预测的方式撒谎。在一个EFL测试中,人们被展示五种饮料的图片,并被问到他们会是哪一种。选择水而不是有小气泡的东西可能是欺骗的信号)”可知,在一个EFL测试中,通过借贷人的回应来判断他们是否在说谎。由此推知,划线短语mouse movements(鼠标的移动)指的是“借款人的回应”。故选A。
At present, turning to credit bureaus is still the best way to tell if somebody will repay a loan. But bureaus improve more slowly than technology. Lenders will find ever more ways to look into their customers’ souls.(这项技术需要进一步发展。目前,求助于信用机构仍然是判断某人是否会偿还贷款的最佳方式。但政府部门的进步比技术进步要慢得多。贷款机构将会找到更多的方式来审视他们客户的灵魂)”可推知,心理测量学在金融领域将会更加成熟。故选B。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。讲述了我们应对焦虑的一些策略和方法。
【20题详解】
前文“Stress can improve your work performance, think more quickly and more efficiently.”(压力可以提高你的工作表现,思考更快更有效率)提到了压力在生活中带给我们的好处。下文“These high levels of stress and anxiety have harmful effects on both your mental health and your performance. ”(这些高水平的压力和焦虑对你的心理健康和表现都有害)讲到了压力和焦虑过大会对健康带来害处。所以空白处应为承上启下的作用。与前文表示转折,开启下文的话题,即压力有时还是会对健康带来害处的。选项E“That being said, sometimes stress can turn into anxiety, which is overwhelming.”(话虽如此,有时候压力会转化为焦虑,这是不可抗拒的)与文意相符,故选E。
前文“Simply being aware of what is causing your anxiety -can help to lessen the effects. Try to take some time to reflect on what could be causing your anxiety.”(只要知道是什么引起你的焦虑,可以帮助减轻影响。 D“Once you address the causes, it puts you in a better position to treat it.”(一旦你解决了病因,你就能更好地治疗它)符合题意,故选D。
前文“For example, if you’re someone that tends to be a bit of a perfectionist, you might experience higher levels of exam anxiety. ”(例如,如果你是一个有点完美主义的人,你可能会经历更高程度的考试焦虑)列举了会带来更大焦虑的一个情景,由此推知,下文应该承接前文讲述这种焦虑对你而言的意义。选项G“This often means you set yourself up for failure, due to the fear of never feeling “good enough”.”(这通常意味着你将自己置于失败或失望之中,因为你害怕自己永远不会觉得“足够好”)符合逻辑,故选G。
前文“Most of the time, the key to exam anxiety is making full preparations. Make an early start on your revision. Starting 6 weeks before the exam is usually recommended.”(大多数时候,减少考试焦虑的关键是做好充分的准备。 下文“Take enough time to do yourself justice.”(给自己足够的时间来审视自己)说明我们要根据自己的实际情形来安排。 F“But this can change depending on where you feel you are in your studies and the study level.”(但这可能会因为你在学习中的感觉和学而改变)与文意相符,故选F。
下文“Studying constantly will make you worn out, and you may even feel burnt out —long before you even get the chance to sit the exam. Make sure that you have at least one day off from revision a week. ”(不停地学习会让你筋疲力尽,甚至在你有机会参加考试之前,你就会感到筋疲力尽。确保每周至少有一天不用复习)提到我们在学习疲惫的同时也要注意休息,即要劳逸结合。所以空白处应总说我们也不能忽略照顾自己的健康。选项A“Also, try not to neglect your self-care.”(而且,不要忽视你的自我照顾)符合题意,故选A。

Ring a Bell
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me. I saw his unbalanced shoulders and awkward figure. His hair was a mess and his shirt was dirty. I stopped ringing the bell, wondering what he was going to do. He pulled some change out of his worn pocket and reached towards the bucket. I couldn't help but say, "Thank you, sir." He turned to smile. The money he donated was not a lot, but it was clearly a lot to him. This act of charity, though not much, was worth so much more than donations given by those who were better off.
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily. The bell rang so merrily that it attracted more people. I broadly smiled at everyone who approached me, feeling me shameful inside about my unwillingness and resistance when given the task. It was still chilly but I was bathed in the sunshine of kindness. Many say that these days people are becoming more and more selfish. I say that whoever believes that needs to go and ring a bell for a charity as I did
