There's little doubt that people's names are hard to remember. Indeed some researchers suggest that people's given names are the most difficult of all words to learn.
One study gave people false names and biographies to study. Then they were tested on what they could remember. Here are the percentages for different pieces of information that they could remember:
高一英语 第5页(共 10页)
Jobs Hobbies Hometowns First names Last names
69% 68% 62% 31% 30%
So names are more difficult to remember than what people do, what their hobbies are and where they come from. And, you won't be surprised to hear, as we age, most of us get even worse at remembering names.
But why All kinds of ideas have been put forward. One is that lots of us have the same names. People guess that common first names like“John” and family name s like“Smith” are more difficult to remember because in our minds one John Smith interferes(干扰) with another. Unexpectedly, though, some research suggests that common names are easier to remember than unusual names. However, other research suggests the opposite. It's not exactly clear what is going on.
What's in a name The most popular explanation in the research is that names are arbitrary(任意的) and meaningless. For most of us, our names give away few clues(线索) about our appearance, our personalities or anything about us, except maybe a rough clue as to our age, race and social class.
If, for example, I was called“The White Rabbit”, and I happened to look like a white rabbit, then you would almost certainly find it easy to remember my name. Strangely, we find it easier to remember that a person is a potter than if his family name is actually Potter.Perhaps it is because we get so used to the few connections between a person's name and what they do, or anything else about them.
So, the next time you are beating yourself up for forgetting a name, don't worry, because it's perfectly normal.
32. What are the most difficult to remember according to the table
A. Hobbies. B. First names. C. Jobs. D. Last names.
33. What can we learn from the text
A. People's hobbies are different and difficult to remember.
B. All research suggests common names are easier to remember than unusual names.
C. Most people's ability to remember names will get worse as they grow older.
D. There must be a close connection between a person's name and what he or she does.
34. From the text we know a name .
A. is meaningful and helps us understand a person
B. gives away few clues about a person to us
C. is important if a person wants to be successful
D. provides us with much information about a person
35. Which of the following might be the best title for the text
A. What Is in People's Names
B. What Can People's Names Suggest
C. How Can We Remember People's Names
D. Why Are People's Names Hard to Remember

On a cold evening, my wife and I were going shopping when I noticed a beggar sitting still under a street light. Something about him made me stop. His bear d was long and untidy. Apiece of broken newspaper around his waist was his only protection from the cold. We tried asking him a few questions, but he showed no signs of having heard or understood us. He just sat there, staring into the darkness. It was quite clear that he was hungry and my wife said,“Let's buy him a loaf of bread.”I agreed.
It took us a while to finish our shopping. When we returned, he wasn't there any more..We looked around, but could not find him. Disappointed, we decided to go home, wondering what to do with the loaf of bread. We'd just gone a hundred meters when we saw him.
