Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer who helped shape the course of American literature. His life was full of tragedies, but he had great influence on the 19th-century American literature and continues to influence writers to this day.
The early life of Edgar Allan Poe was quite miserable. Born in 1809, Poe was not yet three years old when his parents died. Adopted by a wealthy family, he got into trouble at school. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, but he dropped out without graduating. His calamity continued to his adult life. Later, because of a failed marriage, he suffered from mental illness. He was so upset about real life that he turned to writing. Expressing himself in an unreal and imaginary world was his only comfort.
The tragedies in Poe’s life influenced the tone, style and contents of his writing. His stories usually include death, which helps build his reputation as a master of “dark” literature. In his The Tell-Tale Heart, the main character goes crazy and kills his roommate, while in The Black Cat, the main character kills his cat in a fit of madness.
Poe died at the age of 40 in 1849. His life is short, but his influence is very great. Poe is credited with creating detective fiction, and many say he contributed greatly to the appearance of science fiction. Fascinated by the scientific theories and new inventions of his time, he wrote about imaginary societies in the future. Writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, regarded Poe as the father of detective fiction. Jules Verne, a French writer who helped popularize science fiction, said Poe’s work had a direct influence on the stories he wrote.

Every festival has its own meaning. Labour Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. But somehow it now seems that while celebrating all festivals we just care about one thing-shopping. And that can be a big problem.
“In a way, over-consumption (过度消费) is the mother of all our environmental problems,” Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event. It’s held on the day, which is known as Black Friday-a famous shopping day in the US and Canada.
You can see the irony (奇异可笑之处) here.
Even though the idea of Buy Nothing Day was brought up 29 years ago, we seem to need it now more than ever. It’s just as Lasn said, all the different kinds of dilemmas in our lives today-bad air quality, the reduction of forest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags found in the ocean-seem to be the same cause: over-consumption.
The latest example is the Singles’ Day shopping craze of Nov.11, which saw a new sales record. But as NVie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters, “Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste.” And it was reported that last year the Singles’ Day packages left more than 160,000 tons of waste, including plastic and cardboard. The Collins dictionary has also just named “single-use” its Word of the Year, pointing out the problem that there’re too many things we throw away after only using them once.
So, Buy Nothing Day might only be here for one day a year, but it’s not just to remind us about a break from shopping on that day, but to change our lifestyle completely, focusing on fun “with people we care about” rather than wasting money on useless things.
8. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph
A. To express people’s love for all festivals.
B. To talk about the meaning of the festivals.
C. To appreciate the value of the festivals.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
9. Why did Kalle Lasn organize Buy Nothing Day
A. To help people save money.
B. To cut the cost for daily life.
C. To prevent over-consumption.
D. To set up a new sales record.
10. What’s Nie Li’s attitude towards the shopping craze
A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Unknown. D. Neutral.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Creating a New Lifestyle
B. Buy Nothing Day
C. Festivals Around the World
D. A Change in People’s Life
D 9. C 10. A 11. B

Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event.(“在某种程度上,过度消耗是我们所有环境问题的根源。”

“Being a sports fan is a very psychologically healthy activity,” says Daniel Wann, professor at Murray State University whose research program centers on the psychology of sport fandom (运动迷). Fandom connects us with other like-minded people, which satisfies our human need for belonging, he says.
“These relationships are significant: People who identify as sports fans have higher levels of self-esteem (自尊), lower levels of loneliness and tend to be more satisfied with their lives compared to those who aren’t interested in sports,” Wann says. Fans tend to have more access to social support, help and resources as well. Research suggests that when people have support from their communities, they have better health. Of course, teams sometimes lose. Prior to a sporting event, there’s at least a 50-50 chance that you’re going to be disappointed in your outcome.
So, why do people continue to put their faith behind teams that tend to lose People who feel a strong psychological connection with a team are more likely to root for a team when they’re having a losing season. For example, if a pizza restaurant continually got your order wrong, you’d likely switch to a more reliable restaurant. But because being a fan is so central to people’s identities, people are willing to accept defeat and continue to be loyal to a team.
Being part of a fan community can also help people cope with losses. A 2019 study found that watching a football game with other fans helps to relieve the negative psychological effects of losing. For fans of the losing team, sharing the pain may have protected them from losing self-esteem.
“There are other things that brings with it above and beyond the ability to enjoy the team’s successes. Watching sports can be a way to relieve stress, or spend time with family,” Wann says. Any sort of fandom can be distracting, but Wann says that talking about sports at work and spending time with people who share a common interest can make people more excited to go to work.
12. What is the characteristic sports fans generally bear
A. Higher sense of self-worth. B. Worse health conditions.
C. Being ready to help others. D. Few means of support.
13. Why do fans continue to support teams that tend to lose
A. Fans are forced to be loyal to teams.
B. Fans are good at sharing pains with teams.
C. Fans are brave enough to accept losses.
D. Fans own a great sense of identity and belonging.
14. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Wann
A. Sport fandom makes people too excited to go to work.
B. Sport fandom leads to distraction.
C. Sport fandom improves interpersonal relationship.
D. Sport fandom makes people more successful.
15. What is this passage most likely from
A. A poster. B. A textbook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
A 13. D 14. A 15. D

根据第二段中的“These relationships are significant: People who identify as sports fans have higher levels of self-esteem (自尊), lower levels of loneliness and tend to be more satisfied with their lives compared to those who aren’t interested in sports, Wann says.( Wann说,“这些关系很重要:与那些对体育不感兴趣的人相比,体育迷的自尊水平更高,孤独感更低,对生活更满意。”)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中的“So, why do people continue to put their faith behind teams that tend to lose People who feel a strong psychological connection with a team are more likely to root for a team when they’re having a losing season.(那么,为什么人们会继续信任那些容易输球的球队呢?那些与球队有强烈心理联系的人更有可能在球队输球时为他们加油。)”以及下文中的“But because being a fan is so central to people’s identities, people are willing to accept defeat and continue to be loyal to a team.(但因为球迷是人们身份的核心,人们愿意接受失败,继续忠于一个球队。)”
根据尾段中的“Any sort of fandom can be distracting, but Wann says that talking about sports at work and spending time with people who share a common interest can make people more excited to go to work.(任何形式的狂热都可能让人分心,但Wann说,在工作中谈论体育,和有共同兴趣的人在一起,可以让人们更兴奋地去上班。)” 故选A项。
根据首段中的““Being a sports fan is a very psychologically healthy activity,” says Daniel Wann, professor at Murray State University whose research program centers on the psychology of sport fandom (运动迷).(默里州立大学教授Daniel Wann的研究项目主要集中在体育迷的心理上,他说:“成为体育迷是一项非常有益心理健康的活动。”)”

第一段中““How can this be ” You might wonder. Don’t we meet with friends to taste food in the hottest restaurants Aren’t we invited by friends to enjoy home-cooked meals And we throw parties for friends on special occasions, don’t we ”(“怎么会这样 ”你可能会好奇。 空后“It is more formal and usually hosted in one’s home. Invitations are sent out ahead and hosts prepare food with great care. A beautiful tablecloth is spread out on the dinner table, which is then set with expensive cutlery (餐具). Guests dress up for the occasion and are expected to carry on a conversation at the table.”(它更加正式,通常在家里举办。
根据空前“Is it because people are too busy to cook for others and then invite them to the table Perhaps, but there are many food lovers nowadays, and TV programs teaching people how to cook are very popular.”(是因为人们太忙了,没有时间为别人做饭,然后邀请他们来吃饭吗? 空后“According to Judith Martin, a US writer, people have been brought up to express themselves rather than to exchange ideas. ”(美国作家朱迪思 马丁(Judith Martin)表示,人们从小就被教育要表达自己,而不是交流思想。)表述了人们从小到大所受的教育中缺失要交流思想的教育。所以空处应讲述人们不愿意邀请别人到家老吃饭的真正原因。选项C“真正的问题是人们不再知道如何交谈。”与下文论述人们从小到大接受教育时缺失交流思想的教育,形成了呼应,切题,故选C。
【19题详解】
根据上文“According to Judith Martin, a US writer, people have been brought up to express themselves rather than to exchange ideas. They don’t know how to share their experiences and feelings with others in a proper way.”(美国作家朱迪思 马丁(Judith Martin)表示,人们从小就被教育要表达自己,而不是交流思想。
根据上文“Things have changed a lot today. Perhaps the dinner party has just become a different kind of thing. However, it needs only be more than some food, a table and a location.”(今天事情变了很多。 与下文“Even if we are using ordinary plates and are not wearing party dresses, we can still enjoy food and share our ideas of life, love and culture, can’t we ”(即使我们使用普通的盘子,不穿晚礼服,我们仍然可以享受食物,分享我们的生活,爱和文化的想法,不是吗?)

On Sunday evening. Besides, many students gathered under the lanterns to do word puzzles. 47.
Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings (兄妹) he didn't get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.
The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.
Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负).The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.
He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.
He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.
“Surprise!” his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air. "What are you doing in my room I thought you were sick!”
“I feel better!”
"What's on your face Are you bleeding "
"No! I'm not bleeding." Jackson wiped at his face, probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!” He pointed at the desk in the comer of Carter's room.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1
Carter looked down at his desk in horror
Paragraph 2
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist.
Carter looked down at his desk in horror. What came into his sight was an ugly red car, which really annoyed him. Eyes narrowed and fists clenched, Carter could feel a blaze of flame fueling inside him. “What have you done to my car ” he yelled loudly. Frightened by the loud voice of his brother, Jackson drooped his head, murmured, “I just wanted to give you a surprise!” It suddenly dawned on Carter that what he did just now was just like Dexter’s action on the bus.
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist. Letting out a sigh of regret, he apologized to his brother sincerely, “I'm sorry for doing that, but I had planned to paint it blue.” Hearing this, Jackson beamed and embraced Carter tightly, paint it together! No sooner had they painted the unique car than their Mum called them to have dinner. The breeze wafted their face with delicious smell of the spaghetti and warmed the brothers’ hearts. There was no denying that siblings should get on well by being more tolerant of each other.

His life is short but his influence is very great.

14 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Wann
A. Sport fandom makes people too excited to go to work.
B. Sport fandom leads to distraction.
C Sport fandom improves interpersonal relationship.
D. Sport fandom makes people more successful.
15. What is this passage most likely from
A. A poster. B. A textbook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
