My admirable sport star
Growing up, I have always been fascinated by the charming smile and
remarkable achievements of Chinese swimmer, Zhang Yufei.
A household name in China, Zhang’s incredible talent and unwavering
dedication to sport make her my role model. What I find truly inspiring is
her sportsmanship. She continues to push the boundaries of what is possible
despite her impressive performance. Her constant pursuit of excellence
serves as a reminder that success in any field requires a willingness to step
outside one’s comfort zone. Moreover, she always displays humility, grace
and respect towards her competitors.
I’m fortunate to have learned valuable life lessons from her and believe
she will continue to make her mark in the international swimming
competitions.
Grandpa stood still in the snow, and began trembling. I jerked him into a
coat and forced a pair of shoes on his feet to make sure he was warm and
tightly wrapped. It was then that I realized the thin clothes couldn’t shelter
me from the freezing cold. “If only I had taken more clothes!” I thought to
{#{QQABQYSUggAoABIAAAhCEwWwCkAQkBECCAoGQFAAMAABgAFABAA=}#}
myself, tears clouding my eyes. Surrounded by fear and cold,I felt helpless.
Suddenly I heard the crunch of feet on snow approaching us.
Mary stumbled back to us. “I called,” she gasped, “and they’re on their
way.” “You should have stayed with the neighbors and gotten warm,” I said,
holding her hand. To our joy, we could hear sirens in the distance. We
moved out of the way as two fire trucks pulled in. My grandpa, Mary and I
sat in the back of the police car, a warm stream of happiness welling up
in our heart. Although the fire destroyed many valuable things, I learned
that love can conquer all.

something new. I decided to apply for a position as a mechanic on a ship.
It was a big change, but I was excited. I learnt a lot about the different
systems on the ship and how to keep them running. It was a challenge and
so different from before,I struggled at first but I enjoyed it once I got used
to it. I felt a great sense of satisfaction when I fixed things.
The crew were all very helpful and it was a great experience. I travelled
all over the world and saw some amazing places. I completed my work
and travelled. I learnt a lot about the different cultures and was able to use
the skills I learnt in my training. Eventually, I returned to my country and

On the banks of the River Niger in Mali, there is an entire city whose buildings are made of mud. Djenne is often overlooked by tourists but it is definitely one of the most remarkable sights in Africa.
Founded in 800 AD by merchants who used it as a meeting place; the city developed quickly due to its location near the river, which linked it to other important African cities such as Timbuktu. The city is still home to a developed community of over 30,000 people and plays a central role in the running of the local Mopti region.
The most striking building in Djenne is its Great Mosque(清真寺), which was built in 1906 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. There is no doubt that this mosque is one of the most unique monuments in Africa. It is the largest free-standing mud building in the world and its existence is a real demonstration of architectural skill. The walls can be up to 24 inches t hick and provide both support and protection from extreme heat. The hand-made caps at the tops of the towers can also be removed in order to allow air into the building. The towers are also decorated with birds' eggs which are a local symbol of fertility.
Another important feature of the mosque is its wooden beams(梁) which stick out from its walls and contribute to its unusual, and unique look. Above all, the beams provide a practical purpose—when the rain washes away the mud walls, the town's people can stand on the beams and help to reconstruct the mosque with fresh mud. This forms part of an annual week-long festival which shows the cultural importance of the building in the community as the biggest structure in the town.
The town as a whole remains one of the most fascinating places to visit, not just in Africa, but the world. It has been the site of several important architectural excavations (挖掘) that have allowed experts to learn more about civilization dating all the way back to 3 BC.

A. To hold up the thick walls made of mud.
B. To keep the buildings' special appearance.
C. To make it convenient to restore the mosques.
D. To protect the local people against extreme heat.
27. What would be the best title for the text
A. Djenne—a pearl shining in mud

Robert Jenrick has called for British families to have more children to help fun d and look after an ageing population, after criticizing the government for encouraging low-skilled workers to come to the UK.
During a Policy Exchange fringe event at the Conservative party conference, Prof Matthew Goodwin called for a “mature conversation about how to encourage families to have more children” and help reduce demand for migrant workeis. Jenrick told party members, “I agree strongly to encourage more families to have children. And the prime minister's intervention earlier this year on childcare and school facilities was important. We need to build more homes so that young people can settle down and have a family life. There's a lot of evidence that the lack of housing is one of the reasons people are settling down and having kids later on in life. I think the gentleman who mentioned student accommodation just reinforced the point th t migration does need to come down because it has real world implications in communities right across the country.”
After the event, Jenrick told the Guardian, “With an ageing society, having a higher birthrate is critically important. The thing that government can do is improve childcare, and above all housing, because there's a massive link between the time when people eventually settle down and the ability to have kids.” Europe has led a push to drive up birth rates, Italy's right-wing prime minister, GiorgiaMeloni, and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vucic discussed how to encourage Europeans to have more children.
The number of babies born in England and Wales in a year dropped to the lowest level in two decades, according to official figures released last month. It follows the recent trend of decreasing live births, which had been the case before the pandemic, the Office for National Statistics said. The number has been steadily decreasing for the past decade-returning to roughly the level seen in the early 2000s. Jenrick said the government under Johnson had been “naive” in its approach to legal immigration since Brexit and did not rule out a future cap on the number of migrants.
28. Why did Robert Jenrick appeal to British families to have more children
A. There are more and more low-skilled migrant workers.
B. Britain is faced with the problem of the ageing society.
C. The government will supply enough houses to families.
D. People need the financial support from the government.
29. The following aspects can improve birthrate EXCEPT .
A. great childcare B. well-equipped schools
C. enough houses D. a ban on immigration
30. What can we infer from the text
A. Migrant workers fill the gap of population.
B. Low birthrate is not unique to Britain in Europe.
C. The Pandemic was the main reason for low birthrate.
D. British ability to have kids dropped to the lowest level.
31. What's Jenrick's attitude to immigration policies of Johnson's government
A. Disappointed B. Favorable C. Understandable D. Objective
D
The Hollywood act or Tom Hanks has told fans not to believe an ad for dentists that features him, but is in fact created by artificial intelligence.
In a message posted to his 9.5 million Instagram followers, Hanks said his image had been used without his permission. “Beware! There's a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it,” Hanks wrote over a screenshot of a computer-generated image of himself from the clip.
The Oscar winner has expressed concerns about the use of AI in film and TV previously, although he has approved digitally altered versions of himself in film. The 2004 computer-animated Christmas fantasy The Polar Express featured a CGI version of Hanks.
On 18 April, days before the start of the Hollywood writers' strike, Hanks said of AI, “We saw this coming. We saw the ability to take zeros and ones inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. Now that has only grown' a billionfold since then, and we see it everywhere.”
“I can tell you that there are discussions going on in all of the agencies and legal firms to come up with the legal complication (后果) of my face and my voice-and everybody else's - being our intellectual property. ”Hanks told that AI could allow a fake version of him to continue acting. “I could be hit by a bus tomorrow, but performances can go on and on. And outside of the understanding that it's been done with AI or deepfake, there'll be nothing to tell you it's not me.”
The US writers' strike ended last week, with one of the major sticking points being concerns that unchecked AI could undermine the work of creatives. The Writers Guild of America approved an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that features restrictions on how AI can be used in film and TV. However, Sag-Aftra, the union representing Hollywood actors remains on strike, meaning most productions cannot resume (恢复).
32. Why did Hanks post a message to his fans
A. To remind them of the negative effects of AI.
B. To inform that he took up a new ad for dentists.
C. To advertise his new computer-generated image.
D. To tell them not to fall for the ad using his image.
33. What can we learn from Hank's words in para 4 and para 5
A. AI will take the place of human soon.
B. AI develops at an unexpectedly rapid rate.
C. AI will help him perform better and longer.
D. AI makes no difference to actors' intellectual property.
34. What is the meaning of underlined word “undermine” in the last paragraph
A. Destroy B. Underestimate C. Decide D. Enrich

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My sister Mary and I were home from school, and she did what either of us had done a thousand times before: checked the furnace, tossed a few more logs on the fire and slammed the door shut.
At the time, I was upstairs sulking (生闷气). I had a sink full of dishes to wash and homework to tackle. The house seemed a little smoky, but wasn't unusual. It often became that way after the furnace had a few new logs to chew up.
My sister wandered in and said, “Don't you think it's a little too smoky in here ” I shrugged and kept washing dishes. But after another minute, we knew something was wrong. The smoke was much too thick. My sister and I looked at each other, then at our grandfather with Alzheimer's disease. He was an adult, but he lived with us because he couldn't take care of himself. If there were decisions to be made, my sister and I—primary school students——would make them.
Without a word to each other, we went outside and opened the garage door and stared in disbelief as smoke and flames boiled out. We had no time for tears. That would come later. My sister shot through the kitchen door and raced for Grandpa's coat. I tried the phone, but it didn't work.
I stumbled (跌跌撞撞地走) back to the kitchen, took one last glance around my home, and went out into the snow.
“I'm going to the neighbors' to call for help,” Mary said abruptly. She was wearing a sweater, jeans and slippers. I was in sweatpants, a T-shirt and socks. The closest neighbor was down the length of our driveway and across the highway, about a mile.
“Okay,” I said. “Be careful crossing the……”But she was gone, already running through the snow and down the driveway.

1. 续写的词数应为 150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
Grandpa stood still in the snow, and began trembling.
Mary stumbled back to us.
