My husband has also taught me to adapt with him to the ever-changing reality of his journey with illness, and he has met each one with courage and dignity. After high school English teacher Larry Abrams started his teaching career in a far suburb outside of Philadelphia, he found he taught in a book desert (荒漠). Many of the kids in school simply struggled (挣扎) with reading and then writing .
In 2017, when one of his students told him she had no book to read to her 2-year-old daughter, Abrams took action. He put forward a call to friends and family asking for gently used children’s books, and in no time, he had more than 1, 000 of them. He began handing out the books to young moms and local elementary schools. That was the start of his nonprofit, BookSmiles, which has since collected, sorted, and handed out hundreds of thousands of books throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area — and will soon reach 1 million.
BookSmiles calls on people to help collect books and drop them off in the group’s large collection boxes, which are painted with literary-themed artwork and put outside local businesses, houses of worship, schools, and people’s homes. Books are often handed out through teachers, who come to the book bank and choose as many books as they want.
Larry Abrams thinks children should be read to because it’s something joyful that creates a bond (纽带) between the parent and the child in such an important way. Reading books creates a moment that will never die off and always stay with the child. And what’s more, reading books to kids gives them power. The most important tool that they get is words. There are some kids who grow up hearing lots of words because they’re read to every single night. They are used to hearing sentences connected together when they’re babies. And then there are other kids who never get that. Reading and books help level that playing field. It gives words, millions of words, to these babies who really, really need them.
8. What did Larry Abrams find about his working environment
A. He had to live a hard life in a desert.
B. His students were very short of books.
C. His students couldn’t read or write at all.
D. His school was struggling to make ends meet.
9. What caused Larry Abrams to set up BookSmiles
A. His student’s trouble. B. His school’s requirement.
C. His daughter’s need for books. D. His close friend’s request.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. What books BookSmiles hands out. B. Where BookSmiles’s boxes are.
C. How busy BookSmiles’s workers are. D. How BookSmiles works.
11. What does Larry Abrams think of reading to children
A. It helps parents and children to kill time.
B. It makes children depend more on their parents.
C. It puts children far ahead of those without being read to.
D. It develops children’s language skills by parent-child behavior.
D
The giant African land snail (an animal) has returned to Florida for a third time. The foreign species (物种) was first found in the state in 1969. It took seven years and $1 million to get rid of (清除) them . They reappeared in 2011 and were wiped out in 2021 at a cost of $23 million. On June 23 2022, Florida officials reported that the snails had been found in the New Port Richey area of Pasco County.
To stop the snails from spreading to other areas, officials have asked Pasco County people to avoid moving any soil or yard waste and to report any sightings to a special hotline. Specially- trained dogs have also been brought in to find the snails. The areas where the snails have been found will be treated with special chemicals for 18 months. Florida officials also intend to monitor (监测) the sites for two years after the last snail has been found .
The various measures to get rid of the snails may seem too strict for most people. However, the giant African land snails are one of the most dangerous snails in the world. Without these measures, the result will be serious. The fist-sized snails are native to East Africa but can also be found in Hawaii and the Caribbean. They eat over 500 plant and tree species. While they prefer to eat fruits and vegetables, the animals are not picky. They will eat any plant! The animals also bring a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause brain damage. The snails produce about 1, 200 eggs in a single year. This makes it stiff to control their population.
The officials are not sure how the snails got here this time, but they are confident the state will eventually get rid of them, because agriculture is such an important part of the economy in the state.
12. What are locals of Pasco County required to do with the snails
A. Kill the snails they find. B. Keep dogs off the snails.
C. Report if finding the snails. D. Put the snails into earth.
13. How may the author like the measures to get rid of the snails
A. Simple. B. Cost-saving. C. Necessary D. Out-of-date
14. What does the underlined word “stiff” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Possible. B. Hard. C. Interesting. D. Dangerous
15. What can be learned about the giant African land snail in Florida
A. It can’t be easily dealt with. B. It is one of the native species.
C. It came with some tourists. D. It will spread all over the US.

Fifty years ago, we saw a house in the South Farmingdale, North Massapequa area. The house is located on the ground floor. It is not only well lit, but also has a small garden. My husband and I fell in love with the house. The price was within our reach. Without hesitation we made our decision to buy it.
But there was one problem. It was a corner property. We both agreed there had to be a fence. So after moving in, my husband put up a fence and I painted it white.
How times flies! There have been many changes in our lives since that fence went up. My four children often enjoyed themselves in the garden. Our family had a happy family life in the garden. Now my four children have grown up and moved out. Most of the old neighbours have been replaced with new ones. It was last week that a young couple moved in next door to me. They have three children. Some of them go to school. Sometimes they play in the yard. When I saw their happy family, I felt as if I had gone through decades ago.
However, the fence remains, and at the moment, so do I. The fence has been repaired more often than I can remember. Most times a broken board or two was suddenly repaired. During the past ten years, it has been repainted professionally.
But more seriously, the white fence had turned green with mildew (霉菌). The boards were too old to paint. So this spring I had it rebuilt and repainted. I was satisfied with the rebuilt and repainted fence because it brought me back to my happy memory.
In a week, however, I was shocked to discover that a part of it was destroyed. A post (桩) was broken and some boards were left lying on the ground.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I didn’t know who or what did this.

My grandfather taught me the value of being trusted. My father-in-law influenced my life in a different way. He was quiet, loving and a man of power. When he spoke, I listened, as he did not speak unless he had something to say.
My loving husband has encouraged me to be strong and independent, to think for myself, and not to look to him for permission. My husband has also taught me to adapt with him to the ever-changing reality of his journey with illness, and he has met each one with courage and dignity. I have learned much from the men who have had an influence on my life. For all that I have learned and for the role they played and continue to play in my life I am forever thankful.

D. His school was struggling to make ends meet.
9. What caused Larry Abrams to set up BookSmiles
A. His student’s trouble. B. His school’s requirement.

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. D

The giant African land snail (an animal) has returned to Florida for a third time. The foreign species (物种) was first found in the state in 1969. It took seven years and $1 million to get rid of (清除) them . They reappeared in 2011 and were wiped out in 2021 at a cost of $23 million. On June 23, 2022, Florida officials reported that the snails had been found in the New Port Richey area of Pasco County.
A It can’t be easily dealt with. B. It is one of the native species.
C. It came with some tourists. D. It will spread all over the US.

【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The snails produce about 1, 200 eggs in a single year. (蜗牛一年产卵约1200个。)”可知,蜗牛产卵数量很大,可见很难控制蜗牛的数量。故推知stiff表示“困难的”,与hard意义一致,故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“They eat over 500 plant and tree species. While they prefer to eat fruits and vegetables, the animals are not picky. They will eat any plant! The animals also bring a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause brain damage. The snails produce about 1, 200 eggs in a single year. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文:
I don’t know who did this. Whatever the reason was, I decided to call the police and asked them to help me find out the truth. As I was taking a photo of the damage for a police report, a young man approached me. He introduced himself as the relatively new neighbor, and offered sympathy for the damage. He said he would help me as much as possible. I thought he was just talking and didn’t take it to heart.
The next evening as I ate my dinner, I heard a noise outside. When I walked into the yard, I realized the sounds came from my property. As I walked closer, I saw the neighbor I met yesterday repairing my fence. There were still warm-hearted people who loved our community and reached out to a stranger in my time of need. Sometimes, when the fence falls down, there is a bridge of communication. Suddenly, I felt there was a warm current in the cold early spring.
