Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone is open year-round to visitors, though experiences differ depending on the season you visit.
March-May: Snow can continue to fall into March and many of the roads may remain closed, with ploughing usually beginning some time in April. Hiking conditions at this time are wet. You won’t find many crowds, for good reason.
June-August: The busiest time of year in the park is July and August, as families arrive in their droves and temperatures rise up into the mid-20s (℃). Backcountry trails are fully open and this is the ideal time to go hiking.
September-October: By September, the weather is pretty mild (highs of 19℃ in September). Bears can be spotted by roadside as they try desperately to fatten up before winter.
November-February: Temperatures can drop below zero, but this also yields some unique experiences. Elk and bison are already migrating in impressive herds and this is a great time for wolf spotting—their dark coats are much easier to see against a white backdrop of snow. Wolf-tracking trips are a must.
Cost of travel
Entrance fees for Yellowstone are 16 for individuals and an additional 30 for a car. Campsites vary in price, costing as little as 12.50 per night.
Accommodation
During the peak summer months, prices rise and rooms are booked up long in advance. In winter just a handful of the park’s lodges remain open.
26. Which month is most suitable for hiking in Yellowstone National Park
A. July. B. April. C. October. D. November.
27. Which is the unique experience when visiting the park from November to February

Do Animals Communicate
When we think of communication, we usually think of using spoken language. But in fact we communicate far more in other ways. Our eyes and facial expressions usually tell the truth even when our words do not.
Then there are gestures: raising the eyebrows, tapping the fingers, nodding and shaking the head. There is also body language of posture: Are you sitting or standing with arms or legs crossed Is that person standing with hands held in front of the body or hidden behind
So, do animals communicate As we have learnt, there is more to communicate than words.
Take dogs for example. They show their teeth to warn, shake their tails to welcome, and stand firm with hair upright to fight. These signals are surely the equals of the human body language of facial expressions, gestures and posture.
Color can be an important means of communication for animals. Many birds and fishes change color, for example, to attract partners during the mating(交配) season. And mating itself is commonly done after a special dance which both partners take part in.
Here, again, there are striking similarities to young men and women who dress up to meet partners at parties, where the music is often too loud for word communication. Communication there takes place through appearance and movement.
The most carefully planned dances in the animal kingdom are those that bees use to communicate. With body movements alone they can tell other bees the direction and distance of a newly discovered food.
All these examples may suggest instinctive(本能的) rather than intelligent communication. And, in many ways, body language says far more than intelligent word communication ever can.
30. Nodding and shaking the head is a ________.
A. posture B. facial expression C. gesture D. spoken language
31. Dogs’ shaking their tails means ________.
A. warning B. laughing C. fighting D. welcoming
32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text
A. Color is not a way of communication for animals.
B. A special dance often takes place before mating.
C. Many birds and fishes change color to hide themselves.
D. Word communication is better at parties where music is so loud.
33. Bees use body movements to ________.
A. tell other bees where to go and how far it is
B. communicate where they have been
C. attract partners to communicate
D. show their victory

I have a neighbour we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. As we were spending more and more dollars on food, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us bought food at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her backyard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighbourhood over for an “all day food festival”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 a.m., there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 a.m., there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(慷慨) of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had not been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!
34. According to Paragraph 2, people wished they also had a garden so that ________.

A. To ask them to attend a birthday party.
B. To help them get to know each other.
C. To let them enjoy what they grew in the garden.
D. To ask them to share some interesting stories.
36. What did the writer most probably think of the time he spent in the garden
A. It was too short to enjoy it.
B. It was wonderful.
C. It was not as good as he had thought.
D. It was too terrible.
37. Which word can best describe Happy and her husband
A. Generous B. Outstanding C. Hopeful D. Humorous

What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a professor at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!
Bertozzi, 56, shares this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry with Barry Sharpless (US) and Morten Meldal (Denmark). She became this year’s only woman winner in science and the eighth woman to receive the chemistry prize in history.
Bertozzi won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells. She has found a smart way to connect cells by connecting their sugar coats. The cells then have a green color so that scientists can see clearly where they are and how they move. According to the University of California, Berkeley, this finding “offered a springboard(跳板) for a wide range of applications”, such as developing better tests for infectious diseases and new treatments for cancer.
Despite her great achievements, Bertozzi said she was not very interested in chemistry until her second year at Harvard University. “The professors intentionally made the class very difficult,” she told Chemistry World magazine. “My classmates complained a lot, but I like it.”
Apart from doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a colorful life. She was a keyboarder in a rock band. “I even used to think about majoring in music,” she said. She also played soccer, and won an athletic scholarship from Harvard.
As a female scientist, Bertozzi tries to promote gender equality. In 2022, Bertozzi won an award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her work to increase diversity in science.
38. Why did Bertozzi win this year’s Nobel Prize
A. Because she invented a new treatment for cancer.
B. Because she found a new type of cells with a green color.
C. Because she is the eighth female professor at Stanford University.
D. Because she found a way to link cells by connecting their sugar coats.
39. How might Bertozzi describe her chemistry class in her second year at Harvard University
A. Interesting and not too hard. B. Boring and simple.
C. Difficult and boring. D. Useless and difficult.
40. What is the passage mainly about
A. How Bertozzi worked to win a Nobel Prize.
B. Nobel Prize winner’s life experience.
C. What female scientists are good at.
D. The development of women’s rights.
