My husband brought home a box of six chickens at the start of the pandemic (流行病), our nine-year-old daughter, Sophie, hasn’t let them out of her sight. She named every one and was very upset when we wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed.
Sophie takes at least one chicken with her when she is out. One hot day, she wanted to take Captain Flint to the river. I wasn’t so sure about it: Could chickens swim Sophie balanced a stick on her river tube (游泳圈) for Captain Flint to stay on, and the two floated down the river.
Naturally, Sophie dressed as a chicken in a festival and put Trixie in her arms. The neighbors thought it was hilarious and they laughed. “Wait, is that a real chicken you’re holding ”
The chickens are teaching us about love as well as loss and sadness. Sadly, Captain Flint died after an accident. We said a few words about what a good chicken she was, and thanked her for the joy she brought to our lives before we buried (埋) her. Sophie painted a lovely picture in memory of her and has been wearing a hat with Captain Flint’s photo ever since.
The chickens weren’t allowed in the house until one evening after taking online courses when Sophie told me, ”There’s nothing to feel happy about. “Since then, we’ve allowed one inside at a time. Discovering the Power of Placebos (安慰剂)
A little girl cries after falling and bumping her knee against the ground. Her father rushes over and looks closely at the leg. “I’ll kiss it and make it better,” he says. The kiss works. The girl sniffles (抽噎), then jumps up and gets back to playing. Her pain is 65 .
Things like this one happen on playgrounds and in homes around the world every day. When a child gets a bump or bruise (淤伤), says better Ulrike Bingel, “Someone will blow the pain away.” Bingel is a doctor at a Germany university.
A caring adult seems to have the ability to stop a child’s pain with a puff of air, a kiss or even just a few kind words. 66 , none of these things can repair injured skin. So what’s happening Doctors call it the placebo effect. It describes what happens when something that should have no effect leads to a(n) 67 positive change in someone’s body.
Placebos are a very 68 part of medical research. To prove that a new medicine works, researchers must show that the people who are taking a new drug will be in much better health than those who are taking a placebo. This placebo is usually a pill and it 69 the same as the new medicine but contains no medicine. At times a person may feel better after taking a placebo pill though the pill did not act on any disease.
This placebo response isn’t an illusion (幻觉). It comes from the brain. A placebo effect can only influence body processes that the brain can change like a pain. “Placebos can’t fight cancer,” Bingel says. But they can change how 70 someone experiences pain or other illness.” Bingel and his team are working to better understand what brain processes make this happen.

Different people may find that different learning methods work best for them. While some would turn to teachers for help in order to get better grades, others choose to study t 71 In fact, many universities encourage their students to form study groups and make good use of them.
“Two heads are better than one.” That’s the s 72 idea behind study groups. By participating in a study group, students can benefit from some of their best academic (学术的) resources: other students. They get to pick each other’s brains and i 73 their own understanding of different problems. Moreover, study groups can create the slightly tense (紧张的) atmosphere. Many people think it’s good to study in it. For example, some students tend to procrastinate (拖延) when they are studying a 74 . However, by joining a study group, they get to observe their diligent partners and are more willing to work harder.
Study groups work best when they are s 75 . Four to five students is just OK. And it’s necessary to make sure everyone has the same goal, to prepare for a particular test, to discuss class readings or to review a lecture’s notes.
In addition, some study groups like to give members certain r 76 so that they would study most effectively. First they need an organizer. He usually gets group members to agree to a common purpose and a convenient time and place. They also need a group member to search for sources of information. His or her d 77 is to remind group members to identify their sources. When a group member says “I read somewhere that…” he or she is usually asked for specifics (细节). This person reminds the group that it’s important to know who said what and where it was said. And a gatekeeper tries to make sure that all group members are participating.

A Wonderful Christmas Gift
Christmas was so close, and so was Ann’s birthday. She wished she could get a new dress with frills (荷叶边) and lace (蕾丝) as a wonderful Christmas gift. But Ann did not want to ask her Mom for that. She knew how hard her mom worked to make a living. Maybe she could make a wish — maybe Santa Claus (圣诞老人) would come…
At school her classmates were talking only about Christmas celebrations. “My rich aunt is surely going to give me a pretty doll again,” said Ria.
“I have been hinting (暗示) about that costly watch to my parents,” told Tessie.
Ann felt out of these conversations. She had neither rich parents nor wealthy aunts to give her expensive gifts.
It was not just the gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Recently she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.
Soon it was Christmas Eve. In everyone’s house there was a decorated Christmas tree, but Ann’s house was cold and empty. Every child went to bed eagerly waiting for the lovely gifts. Ann went to bed, wishing that at least this time she would get a gift from Santa Claus. Ann slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamed of Santa riding in the snow…
The next morning Ann jumped up after hearing her alarm. Out of her expectation, there lay a beautiful packet tied with a red ribbon near her bed. Inside the package was a pretty white dress with fluffy frills and attractive lace!
Ann checked the gift carefully to find out who had given her this beautiful dress. Suddenly a small piece of paper fell out from the dress.
Dear Ann, This dress is gifted to you for being a good girl. Hope you continue to do good things and help your mother. Your Loving friend, Santa Claus

Storytelling means telling a story to a child or a group of people. Whether your purpose is to put the child sleep or send messages, storytelling needs a set of skills.
First of all, telling stories takes your interest as well as the interest of your audience. It will be more natural for you to tell these stories. The audience will listen to you more closely when you are telling the story from your heart.
Secondly, observe your audience. If your audience is just one person, keep eye contact for most of the time. If you have a large audience, watch everyone from time to time. In this way, you can be sure that the audience is listening to you.
Besides, use popular words as people, especially kids, will enjoy them. In this way, they feel they can follow along by easily knowing what you will say next.
Storytelling is not a lost art and we all have to be good at storytelling at one point or another. To make your storytelling skills better, you should pay attention to every performance and listen to other people’s comments.
