A Fun Job with No Pay might seem crazy. But many students in the United States do jobs without being paid! Yes, they volunteer. And they like it, too! Many girls volunteer to work in hospitals. Other kids volunteer to work at zoos or dog pounds where lost pets are kept. Even though they don't get paid, they get to spend their day with animals. There’s also a Big Brother Foundation in the US where older kids guide young kids and help them with their homework.
Maybe you don't have the same chances in China to volunteer as kids in the US have. So be creative! Volunteer to help people in any way you can think of. You can volunteer to help at a hospital, you can help elderly people or you can volunteer to clean up trash on the ground.
Why volunteer Volunteer work gives you experience. It might help you get a job in the future. Doing volunteer work shows that you care for other people and are generous with your time. Employers like people who do these things. Besides helping you in the future, volunteering also makes you feel happier. Try it! It could be the best improvement to your summer.

W: An egg, some bread and a glass of milk or orange juice.

W: No, it is far away from my flat. I go to work by bus then by underground and come home in the same way.
M: When do you come home
W: At six o’clock.
M: What do you do after dinner
W: I watch the ‘seven o’clock news’ for one hour with my family. Sometimes I help my son with his physics and prepare for tomorrow’s work.

On the days when it was Ronny’s turn, I gave him a silent smile, and he flew out of his chair. He sat very close to me and opened the book as if he was opening a treasure that nobody had ever seen. The pages were already dog-eared, like the book had been read thousands of times already. Allen’s first marathon (马拉松)
One of the Allen’s ankles was injured one month before his first time to compete in a marathon. This meant he could not run or train for two weeks. Yet, Allen made up his mind to go ahead.
Allen remembers back to his first year in the school. He was only seven at that time. In his first P.E. class, his teacher required them to run laps (跑圈)and then hit a ball. He didn’t do either well. He was later told that he was “not athletic”—he had no talent in sports.
The idea that he was not athletic went with him for years. When he started running in his thirties, he realized running marathon was not about competition or whether he was physically strong and active. He thought that _________________________________________.
The night before his first marathon, he dreamed that he couldn’t even find the finish line. He woke up sweating (冒汗) and nervous, but ready to prove something to himself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, his shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So Allen stopped to tie them. Not the start he wanted!
At mile 3, Allen passed a sign:“GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, he became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. When he felt the pain, he tried to slow down and walked a bit and then ran again.
As Allen approached mile 25—near the finish line, he saw his wife waving a sign to encourage him. She is Allen’s biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 5 a.m. or questioned his money on training.
Allen was one of the final runners to finish. But he finished! And he also got a medal. In fact, he got the same medal as the one that the man who got in first place.
