An artist in Bogota, Colombia is using his skills to aid the homeless. Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.
Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an active railroad. On a recent day, Mr. Kloehn stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men hug. Inside his little shelter Mr. Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr. Kloehn also visits Sweet-Pea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings.
In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device to the house. The device is powered by the sun.
Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with the homeless and they are thankful to that man.

Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚) in which students either sink or swim, the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform (符合) to a stereotype, a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being faded by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with specifically “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modern style in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported.
8. What does Tony Little say about the British education system
A. It makes girls less emotional than boys.
B. It fails more boys than girls academically.
C. It fails to give boys the attention they need.
D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls.
9. According to Abigail James, boys perform better in single-sex schools because ________.
A. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in
B. boys focus more on their lessons without being disturbed
C. teaching quality is relatively higher than in mixed schools
D. teaching can be designed to suit the characteristics of boys
10. Which of the following is NOT characteristic of boys
A. Boys have sharper vision. B. Boys enjoy being in charge.
C. Boys like “hands-on” lessons. D. Boys prefer physical activities.
11. What is mainly discussed in the passage
A. Problems boys may have in mixed schools.
B. Boys’ physical and mental growth in school.
C. Advantages of single-sex education for boys.
D. Boys’ disadvantages over girls in mixed schools.

Parents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live in, parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or home schooling.
Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that they can take in order to increase their child’s overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a child’s brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.
Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a child’s mental as well as physical health. Some other researchers recommended that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. They state that three to four years of age is the perfect time and that any age under four would work perfectly fine for a child’s brain development.
The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have an adequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want. The more comfortable they get, the easier the process will be.
12. From the first paragraph, we can infer that .
A parents find it hard to satisfy their kids’ various demands
B. parents meet a new challenge when raising their kids
C. parents have more choices in offering education to their kids
D. parents get actively involved in the process of their kids’ growth
13. What suggestion may the researchers in the passage make
A. To train kids as early as possible.
B. To try as many means as possible.
C. To help kids develop as fully as possible.
D. To use as many available resources as possible.
14. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss about
A. The proper time to teach children to learn languages.
B. The effective ways to help develop children’s brains.
C. The vital factors to have a great effect on children’s health.
D. The practical steps to arouse children’s interest in study.
15. We can replace the words “jump start” in the last paragraph with .
A. inspiration B. introduction
C. suggestion D. promotion

Mrs. Peterson was my tenth-grade biology teacher, a cool woman in her late twenties. She has taught us for several months. She was an easygoing and nice teacher that loved to walk into our heart and often cared about us. And she had a wonderful way of making the most boring lessons fun. All of these made her popular with all of us students.
On a Tuesday morning, early before the biology class, we were seated in the classroom as usual, waiting for the coming of Mrs. Peterson. To our surprise, it was a teacher we were not familiar with that stepped into our class. She wore white tennis shoes and thick glasses. “Hi, everyone. I am Mrs. Ferguson,” she introduced herself. And then she added, “From now on, I'll teach you biology. Mrs. Peterson has had her baby, and she couldn't return to teaching this year.”
Hearing the unexpected news, all of us immediately felt upset and missed Mrs. Peterson. During Mrs. Ferguson's first class given to us, clearly we were not as active as before. And actually, during Mrs. Ferguson's several following classes, we still remained inactive. One reason was that there seemed to be a thick wall standing between Mrs. Ferguson and us.
I was a basketball cheerleader of our school. One day after school and a long cheerleading practice, my friend Alex and I were looking for a place to fix our hair before attending the tryout(选拔)for cheerleaders in a national basketball game. When walking past Mrs. Ferguson's room, we were surprised to see her at her desk grading papers. Seeing us look at her, she said with a smile, “Hi, girls, can I help you ”
Hearing it, we stopped. “We're just looking for a place to plug in(给…接通电源)our hair-fixing-tool, ”I said. She probably considered we were vain(自负的)and stupid cheerleaders.
注意:
1. 续写的词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Thinking of that, my face felt hot.

I am Li Hua, from the English club in Hong Xing Middle school. I’m writing to invite you to deliver a speech named “Environmental Protection”, which is scheduled to be given on November 30th, in the school hall.
In your speech we hope you could introduce the following aspects. To start with, the reasons are cause for concern, including garbage throwing, wasting natural resources, overfishing, among which human activity will be to blame. Meanwhile, the severe consequence should be followed. For example, without better environment, we will have no clear water to drink, no fresh air to breathe. Additionally, it’s better to highlight the solutions for improving environmental pollution, such as setting up natural reserve to save the endangered species, changing the way we work and travel, turning to clean energy. Of course, starting with small things should be emphasized as well. Last but not least, we hope you could share some of your ways to get environment better with us.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

She was so excited that she kept encouraging us to make it. We talked about a lot about cheerleaders and she had been listening patiently.
When we were to leave Mrs. Ferguson said, “Can I watch your tryout ” We were all surprised and said happily, "Of course". She laughed like a child. On the day of the tryout, she actually showed up for the competition. When we watched her in the audience, she shouted at us loudly," Come on, my Girls". Each of us gathered our strength and worked hard to perform and then finally we won. When the judge declared us the winner, she came up and hugged with everyone. From then on, we got along well with her as friends.
