Hosting an international sports event is an important thing that has to be prepared well. Due to that, many opinions exist.
Firstly, positive views need to be talked about. When a country gets to host such a famous event, it will probably get well-known by other nations, and surely that can help the country a lot. For instance, the government and residents have a chance to use the opportunity to advertise their culture to foreign people. Above all, by doing that, the country’s economy might increase sharply during the event. Besides, it will satisfy some people’s wish to meet famous sports players. They have a high rate of talking to their favorite players whom they really want to talk to once in their life.
However, the risk of hosting a big event still exists. An important event is not necessarily good at all. That is why there is a debate about this topic. If a country can’t be able to prepare for the event in a period, they have to do as many ways as possible to finish preparation on time, and serious results may happen. The most obvious thing is that people attending that event will have a bad experience and are sure to make grumbles. This then affects the country’s image. For example, Qatar is a country that will host the 2022 World Cup. The government has to rush to finish building big stadiums, over 6,000 migrant workers sacrificing (牺牲)their lives for that. Hearing the sad news, some people around the world disagree to go to Qatar to attend the World Cup. The result is that Qatar has been badly affected.
In conclusion, hosting an international sports event is both good and bad, and good things or bad things depend on that country’s attitude and responsibility.
4. What might benefit most from hosting an international sports event in a country
A. Advertising. B. Economy.
C. Fans. D. Players.
5. Why do people have different opinions about hosting big events
A. Because even important events are not always good.
B. Because countries don’t prepare for events well.
C. Because people present often have bad experiences.
D. Because building big stadiums costs too much money.
6. What does the underlined word “grumbles” mean in paragraph 3
A. Proper plans. B. Possible challenges.
C. Poor comments. D. Great contributions.
7. What’s the author’s attitude to hosting international sports events
A. Positive. B. Negative.
C. Critical(批评的). D. Neutral(中立的).

My greatest regret in life is that I failed to tell my superb teachers how much they contributed to my early education.
Ruth Hammerman taught English to the eighth - graders. She was the first to show me the rules of what Evelyn Waugh called our “rich and delicate language.” She was a no-nonsense instructor. Unlike common teachers, she diagramed sentences so we could know the grammar rules. She never seemed to be tired of the simple pleasures of sharing her learning.
Under her influence, I had the strong belief that language needs to be well - spoken and properly written. Yet over the years I never made the effort to find her and to express my thankfulness for what she did for me. Two years after being in her class, I began the study of Latin and French, and the foundation (基础) she provided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never looked back.
In high school I took advanced French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finest teacher I have ever experienced at any level. Mr. Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis. Reading “Phèdre”, Racine’s classic play, he asked us to note there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pointed out the care Racine devoted to structure. Years later I made the same point — giving Mr. Miller credit — in a college French class, and my professor was surprised by my understanding of the play, Mr. Miller taught us to enjoy literature with particular points of view. Yet I never made the effort in later years to tell him what he meant to me.
Mr. Miller is certainly long dead. If she is alive, Miss Hammerman would likely be in her 90s. In preparing this article, I tried to find her but was unsuccessful.
I am certain my act is common. People often forget to express love and thankfulness to their teachers. I ought to have told Miss Hammerman and Mr. Miller how much they did for me. I suppose they knew their work was effective because they believed in what they were doing. Now I appreciate how special they were.
8. What is special about Mr. Miller’s French class
A. He asked students to count lines. B. He stressed the importance of play.
C. He analyzed literature in a new way. D. He showed great devotion to students.
9. What does the underlined phrase “my act” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Preparing the article. B. Looking for the teachers.
C. Failing to thank teachers. D. Copying teachers’ points.
10. What best describes the two teachers according to the text
A. Creative. B. Frank. C. Humorous. D. Strict.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To show love for French literature. B. To explore the meaning of education.
C. To explain why teachers are important. D. To share memories of the two teachers.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. A 11. D

When you drive, you definitely prefer a series of green lights so that you don’t need to stop constantly. Now, thanks to artificial intelligence, German researchers have found a way to reduce time spent at intersections (十字路口).
These intelligent lights are said to improve traffic flow (车流) by 10 to 15 percent, which results in money saved; the EU estimates (估计) that traffic jams cause economic damage that adds up to 100 billion euros a year. Apart from reducing commuting (通勤) time, these traffic lights will reduce noise and CO2 emissions from cars stopping at intersections.
Another exciting development in this research is the K14PED project, which studies pedestrians (行人) crossing intersections. Using AI, researchers can identify how many people are waiting at a pedestrian crossing and whether some of these people will need extra time to cross the street. Using a 3D points cloud, they can tell if someone is a senior or has disabilities by adding more waiting time until they pass.
Testing will be done until the summer of 2022 in the German towns of Lemgo and Bielefeld. And the researchers firmly believe that it will be adopted by many countries. This technology is exciting news for pedestrians and drivers alike. It encourages safety, protects the environment, and may even give you more time to enjoy your morning coffee before heading off to work!
12. Which of the following is NOT one of the advantages of the intelligent lights
A. It is environmentally friendly. B. It is time-efficient.
C. It can reduce traffic accidents. D. It can save money.
13. What is the function of AI in the the K14PED project
A. To provide real-time information about traffic.
B. To check road conditions and noise pollution.
C. To control traffic lights and the speed of vehicles.
D. To remind people of traffic rules at intersections.
14. What is the researchers’ attitude towards the future of the intelligent lights
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

How to Write a Story about Yourself
There’s an old saying that there’s a book in everyone. True, but not everyone is a natural writer. Writing a story about yourself isn’t as easy as telling it, but with a few simple rules and tips, you can do it.
Talk to a tape or digital recorder and tell your story there first. This allows you to start the process of thinking about the story as a story. ____16____. The recording will give you a rough idea of what you want to say and the general flow of the statement.
____17____. You will need an outline for the story before you write it. While some people do this in their heads, creating a written outline allows you to organize your thoughts, determine the story’s flow and get started.
Tell the story in a straightforward way. ____18____. “I walked into the tiny white kitchen, realizing something was wrong” is fine. “I walked slowly into the clear white but very small kitchen, sensing something wrong on the wind” is too much.
Be realistic. This is a story about yourself, not Clark Kent. The real story will be very interesting and believable if it is true without embellishment. ____19____. So, just go with it.
Finish the story. Leave it for a month or so. ____20____. Hardly is a story perfect when written for the first time. Don’t be afraid to revise the story to make it cleaner and better.
A. Use words very little
B. Don’t worry about the opening
C. Read it again and start revising
D. Your story is interesting enough
E. Listen to the story and take notes
F. Start writing the story with your outline
G. It doesn’t have to be perfect on the recording
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. A 19. D 20. C

【17题详解】
根据后文“You will need an outline for the story before you write it. While some people do this in their heads, creating a written outline allows you to organize your thoughts, determine the story’s flow and get started.(在写这个故事之前,你需要一个提纲。虽然有些人会在脑子里写提纲,但写提纲可以让你组织自己的想法,确定故事的脉络,然后开始)”可知,后文提到了需要提纲,F选项中outline对应后文中outline。故F选项“带着提纲开始写故事”符合语境,故选F。

【19题详解】
根据上文“Be realistic. This is a story about yourself, not Clark Kent. The real story will be very interesting and believable if it is true without embellishment.(现实。这是你自己的故事,不是克拉克·肯特的。真实的故事将是非常有趣和可信的,如果它是真实的,没有修饰)”可知,上文提到真实的故事将是非常有趣和可信的,故你的故事应该是有趣的,故D选项“你的故事足够有趣”符合语境,故选D。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Finish the story. Leave it for a month or so.(完成这个故事。静置一个月左右)”以及后文“Hardly is a story perfect when written for the first time. Don’t be afraid to revise the story to make it cleaner and better.(第一次写的故事很难是完美的。不要害怕修改故事,让它更清晰更好)”可知,本句是在建议修改故事,故C选项“再读一遍并开始修改”符合语境,故选C。

It was bright and sunny on May 26, 1997. It was also a special day for me. Friends came over, along with their parents who were holding gifts of all sizes. Even though I wanted to open them right away, my parents would not let me. To pass the time my friends suggested we play hide-and-seek.Everyone agreed. I had great fun playing with them.
After what seemed like only a few minutes, we were called inside to continue the celebration. Everyone started singing “Happy Birthday” to me and I joined in. I blew out my candles and made a wish. Then we went on to eat the wonderful food, like the chocolate cake and jerk chicken, which my mom had made. We had a wonderful time eating and talking together. Finally, the time was here. I quickly walked to the pile of presents and eagerly opened them one by one. Among them were Spiderman action figures, some video games, and a remote controlled car with working light.
After I had opened all the presents, I realized that I received nothing from my parents. Feeling a little sad, I asked them why. They led my away to the backyard. I thought I was going to get an excuse about why they couldn’t get me a present, but I was wrong. Waiting for me in our backyard was a large yellow truck! I was so excited that I immediately drove it around my backyard until it got too dark. That truck made my 4th birthday one of the best forever.
Paragraph 1:
The next day, my parents and I went to the park.

【答案】Paragraph 1
The next day, my parents and I went to the park. In order to show off my new present, I drove the truck around the entire park slowly, attracting every kid there. They soon gathered around me, begging to have a try by themselves. Nodding in agreement, I went to have fun with my parents. When it was dark, we walked to get it, only to find that it was gone and nobody was there. I was so sad that I burst out crying immediately despite my parents’ efforts to comfort me.
Paragraph 2
For the next couple of days my parents and I looked around the neighborhood for the truck. We even put up a notice to check whether someone happened to find it, but it was in vain. After another several days, we were about to give up hope when a boy came to my home with my yellow truck. It turned out that he had been anxious to give it back but he failed to find us everywhere in the park. Later, he knew us thanks to our notice. Hearing his explanation, I jumped up with excitement, determined to be more careful from then on.

C
15. In which section (部分) of a newspaper can you probably find this passage
A. Tourism B. Advertisement C. Technology D. Economy
